I always thought it would be better for "timelines" to import LOCAL events, instead of international events. It would be much more interesting for me to read that there was a flood or disease, or mine accident the same day that my ancestor died, than to know that ameila earhart flew someplace the day my ancestor died.

You can't reason with people who don't do research and just copy stuff off un-sourced pedigrees. You can show them documentary evidence that the what they've posted on FamilySearch is false, but in their minds it can't be false as everything they find on unsourced pedigrees MUST be true! If you show them the original documentary evidence they won't even look at it. All you can do is create a mirror tree branching off from their own pedigree at the point it goes wrong. I'm planning to do that with one of my main families where somebody put up false lineage and refuses to change it.

The only thing I don't like is that when you start using the service Family Search, they put you in your data base and your relatives so you can be baptized Mormon. They don't get your permission. Called the church to talk about it. Any way to avoid that?
@GenealogyTV3 жыл бұрын
I’m not exactly sure how that works. I know that they seal the marriages for those who are Mormon and do the temple research. So unless someone is Mormon doing their history, I don’t think they actually go through that process for everyone in the tree.
@nickdesanto61193 жыл бұрын
As strange as the custom is to non Mormons I ain't to worried about it. From what I heard the idea is they are inviting the dead to join the church, not forced. The way I see it if all that is bunk, no harm done. And if my distant Mormon cousin wants to invite our common Great great grandfather to the Mormon church good for them.
@sarahhughes7323 жыл бұрын
That's not true. The information you submit is shared with other users, but it's the members own ancestors that baptisms are done for. As we believe those who have passed from this life continue to live on as spirits, the work done on their behalf is only impactful to them if they choose to accept it. Those who are not direct ancestors cannot be done without permission from spouses or children.

@GenealogyTV5 жыл бұрын
It’s a collaborative tree. You might like Ancestry better. It is your own tree.
@OctoberInkCards4 жыл бұрын
@B K Mcg This frustration is because you’re paying attention to the shared tree feature. I stay away from that as I like to have control of my own tree, so as a result, I rarely-if ever-look at the crowd-sourced tree. It is best to not even pay attention to the single, crowd-sourced tree. It’s best to do your own research and find the records yourself. Their single tree is no different than relying on Ancestry member trees-a huge no-no and an excellent way to get incorrect info. Trust no one’s research. Ever. Do it all yourself. Now that I’ve said that, the other part of the FamilySearch site is where their value lies-their record collections, both indexed and unindexed (image only). They are an absolute goldmine! Learn all about how to craft searches and how to utilize their unindexed records that require scrolling through the digitized records rather than typing in the search box. This is where the joy of genealogy truly exists. Just pretend that the crowd-sourced tree doesn’t exist. Start your own tree on Ancestry and begin with yourself and methodically work backwards and gather records for everything. Adding a DNA test will make your research infinitely better. Supplement Ancestry’s records with the vast amount of records on Family Search. Don’t be tempted to copy from other people’s trees on ANY site. Finding your ancestors for yourself and uncovering their identities, seeing their challenges as well as their achievements is indescribable. You won’t ever get that from a crowd sourced tree or from a bunch of member trees. That kind of connection and satisfaction comes from doing it all yourself. As far as records go, FamilySearch is wonderful. Keep in mind that many records on FamilySearch are not indexed. They have MANY records in which you have to manually search for the image and won’t find it simply by typing in the search fields like you do on Ancestry. You should really look through their card catalog and record collection listing. They have hundreds of record sets that I have had to go through manually because they are not yet indexed (but will be before too long) and NONE of these were available on Ancestry. FamilySearch is an amazing resource, but it takes some getting used to in order to make the most of it. I tend to avoid the shared tree and stick to the records and especially the ones that are image-only as they are the ones less likely to be found anywhere else. I’ve broken through nearly 10 brick walls by utilizing those record sets and I can’t recommend them highly enough. They take some time to get the hang of and of course are time intensive to search through, but the payoff can be quite significant.

Familysearch is one of my favorite sources, but I think it's wrong to allow one person to alter or delete someone else's research. Ownership aside, research results and research notes are used for future investigations. It provides a means to avoid duplicating arduous research. If I need to keep duplicate records and notes to keep them in tact - well, it defeats the purpose of keeping them on familysearch.

I don’t like that aspect of Family Search either. It doesn’t happen to me that often because for whatever reason, my family seems to fly under the radar and I seldom find anyone who’s related to them. I was in WikiTree for a while and I never once got a hint on my family from anyone so I closed my account there. A few people have connected to my tree in Family Search. If they’ve made “corrections”, I usually don’t bother contesting them unless the corrections are egregiously wrong.

Same here. I’m not able to get much info at all from Spain, even after waiting a good eight years in the hope that Family Search would add the needed records. At that time (9-10 years ago) I also had a paid membership with Ancestry.com for a year, during which I was able to locate all of my ex husband’s German ancestry (aided also by the immigration records in Hamburg, ship manifests at Ellis Island or Castle Garden and the Social Security Death Index) but, once again, had no luck researching my own ancestry in Spain. Disappointing.
@OctoberInkCards4 жыл бұрын
Dee R-L This is because Spain has not really opened their genealogical records to outside entities as much as most other countries. Most research must be done onsite but you can request some records from the Ministerio de Justicia. Family Search and Ancestry have only been allowed to microfilm a very small amount of Spanish records. I hope this changes as I have very deep roots there and can trace my ancestors in Mexican records as soon as they arrived in New Spain but I’m stuck once I try to research them in Europe. I really hope that the record custodians in Spain change their minds and allow the records to be microfilmed, not only for us to use but for preservation purposes. Hope this helps! ¡Buena suerte!
@jdmitaine3 жыл бұрын
the problem is when one does not do their research, and there are errors, those are still shared.. so basically the tree is wrong and erroneous. This was exactly what happened to me, my ancestor was adopted so his date of birth is not available but he is connected to the person who adopted him. the genealogy line should therefore be stopped but it continues with the adopters as if he was the blood relatives. Too much errors not enough verifications.

The time line can be copied by using the snip it tool at least on PC and then Pasted to where you want. Always giving credit to the source where you found the time line….

Family Search has been very helpful to me. I have found a lot of death information there that I have not found on other sites like Ancestry and Find My Past. I like, too, that they include the certificate numbers in case I want to purchase the certificates at a later date.

Agreed. They have vital records that no one else has... and for free!

great video. major problems though in finding military records for the Mexican Revolution (prior to Texas statehood) NOT Mexican War. what do we search for?

How do you upload your information from My Heritage and Ancestry because I have made a lot of my family tree on Ancestry, but am not wanting to have to input my My Heritage and Ancestry Trees to Family Search because I did not want to pay more for My Heritage and Ancestry, but do not want to lose the information. I do not know as far back on my Czechoslovakian and Polish and German and Austrian family.
@GenealogyTV2 жыл бұрын
Two things. One is, don't delete your trees on Ancestry or MyHeritage if you choose to stop paying for your subscription. They will remain there, if you or your family chooses to revisit those accounts. Secondly, here is a video on how to upload to FamilySearch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYnchqmJpsusaNk

@@GenealogyTV Thanks. I uploaded my trees from My Heritage with over 1200 people in it going back to the early 1500s with the Petris in Germany, so maybe that is why I majored in Microbiology. I also uploaded my Ancestry family tree to Family Search with 420 people in it going back to Kalmar Sweden and Czechoslovakia. I uploaded my My Heritage autosomal DNA to Family Tree DNA and have taken Ancestry DNA and 23 and Me and Family Tree DNA and CriGenetics DNA tests., all with slightly different ethnicities results and uploaded my My Heritage autosomal DNA to Genome Link and it shows 90% European with traces from all over the world, since I am mostly Northern European and the Vikings settled worldwide and mixed a lot and my dad's family settled and founded the USA and a lot of the family history was kept hidden because of family feuds in Europe and the Americas. The Native American is so far back that it is in the 1700s and does not show up in DNA tests.

What if someone has added a family member that isn’t my family on Family Search? I know for fact this person doesn’t belong as I was very close to my grandmothers and family history. Also I’ve researched with census along with original family notes. .
@GenealogyTV2 жыл бұрын
You can change it but you need to state how you know this is not the right person.

@@GenealogyTV ty. I’m a bit intimidated, but I’ll go for it. I gave up on Family search several years ago when someone had so many of my immediate family wrong. People alive that I personally know. If that’s the case, do I have to show proof other than I know these people and my own family?

It's frustrating my living family members should not be on there. Who checks the privacy on this?
@GenealogyTV3 жыл бұрын
Consider sending Feedback to FamilySearch. You can do so at the bottom of the home screen there is a link for 'Feedback". I think you have to be logged in to see it.
@danikajayde85772 жыл бұрын
Someone isn't supposed to be able see any living members on the tree except the person that added them. If you can see living people on your tree that you didn't add yourself, definitely send a ticket of feedback as it shouldn't be possible because of the privacy.

When your on a person's profile page in Ancestry, in the top right of the page is a wrench, pencil, and magnifying glass. In a circle to the left of these is a Family Search icon. When you click this you can link it to the person in Family Search, and by clicking again once linked, other options appear like add Family members from Family Search etc. Hopefully this helps
