How to create a garage pulley system that may or may not be useful...
Pulley system created with hardware store parts. DIY. That's Do It Yourself.

amzn.to/2ENLzaV
Need a place to store larger items in the garage? Bored with using old fashioned ladders? This could be for you...
ROPE I USED: amzn.to/2EHBbWR
EYE BOLT: amzn.to/2CzWpQq
UPDATE OCT 2015.
I ended up with 10 pulleys total. I put numbers (3" stickers) on the ceiling beside the eye bolt, and another number down by the release area... that way I wouldn't get mixed up which one I needed to release with the spaghetti of rope...

Nice system and nice video. I recently had a 100' spool of air hose I needed to hoist out of the way like this. When I priced all the rope and hardware, I found that one of those commercial bicycle hoists was a cheaper solution. I used the bike hoist and found that it came with a very effective rope locking mechanism that operates well and holds the load. I think I'd have had to fabricate that myself as I don't know where else I could have got one. Thanks for sharing.

That's WAY too simple, and costs a fraction of ceiling mounts - fantastic!! I was looking at the various ceiling lift options, but the complexity of mapping out studs to mount the pulleys and hardware etc... Then, of course, your pal Murphy - when he kicks in from ceiling height - it's all over for the box! Now all I need to do is carve out some wall space.

Good stuff! I did something similar to store my pool vacuum hose, I hoist it up with pulleys in my small 8" x 10" shed. It's completely out of the way and does not take storage space on walls.

Cool Vid! have hoisted many things! Only tip is that the hardware store blocks (pulleys) are trash and not particularly inexpensive. Can get way less friction and way less work demand with some good stuff from Selden or Harken. Plain bearing series or ball bearing if you want to be fancy

Awesome plan and execution. A quick question if I may: In your set up you are not gaining any mechanical advantage as you would achieve in a simple pulley system, correct? Your intention was just to hoist up odd shaped, light objects, out of the way and not necessarily to gain a mechanical advantage right?
@hamstergraphics

Good video ! You weren't drilling through those 2X4's into the concrete, were you? I think there should be 1 more line of safety to secure the ropes - especially with kids. I was wondering if there if something like the rope lock that's on mini-blinds, or something that rock climbers use in case the rope slips.
@hamstergraphics
@hamstergraphics 7 жыл бұрын
Nope, no concrete, 2x4's (1x3's?) were secured to studs. Thought about possible slippage.. Touch wood, pretty sure so far. I do secure by more than enough figure 8 ties.

@likeabunnie
@likeabunnie 7 жыл бұрын
Matt Hallett I think I read in another comment that he got the from Lowes hardware.... I know they have them there (or home Depot should) but they do cost a fair amount :-/ Depending on what you are looking to do with it, apparently Amazon sells bike lift pulley systems for (potentially) 2 for $20 (quote based on what I've read from others online - you should at least be able to get one for about $20), but it isn't intended to hold more weight than a bike. I'm mainly trying to figure out the best way to hang a push lawnmower from the ceiling, so I figure (only because of limited budget) maybe I'll Google and see if you can buy pulleys cheaper online from some type of company's site that might be more likely than Amazon to have them at a nice discount (Hurm...Maybe even ebay if someone bought a bunch and didn't use them? Not sure how trustworthy it would be, lol)... I do really love the way this was done - both the pully system and the video! I just need to shop around and see if there's a cheaper way for me personally... Great idea and design though! Thanks for posting this video! :-D
@hamstergraphics
@hamstergraphics 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment - Yep, Lowe's was where I got the pulleys.. It does add up when you're getting a bunch... I just hooked my push mower on the wall. Mounted the hook high up so could hang on the handle, with the base of the mower then being around head height.

I don't understand doing it this way. Add at least one more pulley on each rope (a block and tackle setup) and create mechanical advantage. The way you have it there, anything over 50 pounds is going to be unwieldly to manage.
