In this video I will show you how to build a bicycle storage lift that swings down from the ceiling so that you can gain back that precious floor space in your garage! This type of bicycle storage is fantastic because you will not need a ladder to access your bicycles. The entire frame swings down from the ceiling to allow for easy access to your bikes.
Even when hanging in the vertical position, it allows you to stack two bikes vertically and get them off the ground. What a great way to utilize your space!
Follow along to see how I built mine and see below for the materials I used to make this project.
Materials used for this build were as follows - As an Amazon Associate I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you):
► 2x2 Lumber
► 2x4 Lumber
► 3/4" Plywood
► 3/8" Threaded Rod, washers, nuts
► 3/8" Eye Bolts
► 1/4" Chain
► Structural Wood Screws: amzn.to/4e57try
► Worm Gear Winch: amzn.to/3ZpKFyd
► Steel Cable: amzn.to/47x7pOL
► Pulley Blocks: amzn.to/3B4lmaC
You can access the PDF drawings for this build here:
► www.thingivers...
Be sure that you are using a worm gear winch, or at the very least a winch with an automatic brake to control the descent of the load. This could fall on your head if the winch is left to free wheel! Be careful and be sure your load is securely attached to your joists with anchors or structural screws. Do not just use wood screws to support heavy loads!

Great design and build. I may be building one too but would change a couple things. Easy for me to use hind-sight after you did prototype so not belittling yours at all. It’s great! First, I would likely buy this electric hoist with remote pushbutton control (cable hung) to ease use and when the rack is attached in up position or down, I could also use it for thing like raising the front of my riding mower or to raise something into my truck or to workbench. Since I do not 3d print, for bushings I would cut small pipe (copper or steel) the thickness of the wood and sandwich in with washers. And since I have three bikes, i would find a way to mount one on the back (bottom). side. That’s it. Great job!

Thanks Vic! I actually bought some PVC pipe to use as bushings and I can't remember now why I didn't use them. The electric winch was on my wish list but settled for something manual as I couldn't justify the cost for something I would only be using occasionally. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Pro tip: There is a hairpin on the pulley block shaft, so you can remove the pulley and shaft and run the cable through the block after it's mounted.

Great video and great idea! I came for the video because I'm looking to build something of the sort, but I also notice something else that piqued my interest. Talk to me about that red gantry in the background. It looks adjustable and about the same size I'm looking for. Where did you get it from? Thanks for the wicked idea!
@EmbraceMaking
@EmbraceMaking 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jay, the red gantry is something I built. I beam bolted to some custom plates which are welded to square tube with gussets. It is, as you observed, adjustable. The tube sits inside a larger square tube and telescopes. Two shear pins hold it in place. Very strong. I actually lifted the entire back half of one of my cars to get the engine out using this gantry.

@@EmbraceMaking Amazing! That’s the next thing I need to learn is welding - I see all the challenges it could solve. And cheers to another Canuck! The Princess Auto reference was a welcome thing in the sea of Harbour Freight products. Keep it up!

😻Wow your back is gorgeous. So is the rack. 👍 👉My only suggestion is to improve the axel so the wood doesn’t get scraped. 🔄Upcycle a paint roller and reuse its end caps like a ball bearing. 🌀Cover the hole and ends of the rod in glue then sand smooth to flatten. 🔩Drill a larger axel to insert 1/2” PVC. Edit: nevermind, you added a flange! Custom 3D printed too! Wow.

Is this classified as a "HOIST" If so, electroboom would regret his decision on buying his own 😂

I use the terms interchangeably... but perhaps I'm not being that accurate. Electroboom bought one? I've seen a few of his videos but haven't followed him that closely. Does he have a video about it or something?

Nope, but you can get resourceful and make your own with some PVC / ABS /NYLON pipe or tube from your hardware store. Doesn't have to be a super precise fit, and you can cap the ends off with regular metal washers.

How has the worm gear winch ⚙️ held up? After a year what are your thoughts overall?
@EmbraceMaking
@EmbraceMaking 2 жыл бұрын
Been fine, no issues! Would just recommend that if you're securing the winch into a brick / concrete wall like I did that you use fasteners that fair well with vibration. Using power tools to turn the gears usually results in some vibration and you obviously don't want anything coming loose. I had my heavy ebike parked up on the lift all winter and it still hasn't gone anywhere :)
