How to Create A Hillshade in GIS | ArcGIS PRO Tutorial

Many Earth scientists use geographic information science/systems (GIS) in their work. This video has two goals: 1) emphasize that the creation and admiration of MAPS is a huge part of being a geologist. Many of us are fortunate to have the opportunity to create maps of our own - I hope you see some of my passion for this aspect of our science, and 2) give a simple tutorial for how to gather and manipulate digital elevation model (DEM) data to create a crisp hillshade in Esri’s ArcGIS Pro. I hope you find this video interesting.

GIS is such a critical skill in some many disciplines this is a great intro to the how and why behind it! I love using GIS in my forensic work and hope to use it more as I continue! Thanks Caden!

Most the work I've done in central and western Montana has been in the thrust belt mostly atop or involving the Wyoming Craton (i.e., not quite far enough west to be into accreted terranes). Lots of cool work on this - a paper that comes to mind is Foster et al. (2012). They use Hf isotopes to potentially identify the western margin of the craton (doi.org/10.1016/j.lithos.2012.03.005).

lol step 1 if you're having problems with GIS software: unplug everything and restart your computer. works 90% of the time

Which software should we learn for geology in undergraduate

The software I'm using here (Esri ArcPro) requires a license that must be purchased. It is also only Windows compatible but you can run parallels if you are a Mac user. The more common and accessible option is QGIS. Q is powerful and can accomplish most the things that is done in Arc. I prefer the latter bc I learned it in undergrad and have taught courses that utilize it. I'm sure there are others out there but those are the two that I use and am familiar with.
