hey there I think field geology is super cool and thinking about going to university for geology when i graduate this year i was wondering how much time you spend in the field and how much you spend in the lab or doing other things?
@cadenhowlett
@cadenhowlett 2 ай бұрын
hey thanks for the question. I spend on average 10-15 weeks per year in the field. Probably an equivalent amount of time in various laboratories (maybe a little less in the lab). Much of my other time is on the computer, reading literature, (trying) to write lol, modeling, etc. I spend a lot of time doing leisurely stuff too, I have a lot of hobbies. Geology allows a cool balance of time behind screen and time in mountains.

Is there a specific sub-discipline in geology that will have more field work and mountain work? Like for a masters or PhD
@cadenhowlett
@cadenhowlett 2 ай бұрын
Hmmm I think structural geology and sedimentology/stratigraphy are the disciplines that lend themselves to the most field work. But some people who specialize in these don't do any field work, only computational or theoretical. It is really up to the individual to decide whether or not the want to be a "field geologist". I'm biased. But it is very powerful to address questions of tectonic significance via field based structure or basin work, or a combination of both

I hope you get to do some fun field work some day

It is field work for graduate school. So technically I'm paid by the University of Arizona to make progress towards my dissertation. There are lots of jobs in academia and industry that allow geologists to spend a fair amount of time in the field!

One beautiful thing is that during early undergrad you can explore both and see which you find more fulfilling. Also, I know a lot of geoscientists who are basically computer scientists - so you could consider being an expert in both haha! I bet there are overlapping prerequisites for both major trajectories which will be a helpful time to explore what you're passionate about

@cadenhowlett
@cadenhowlett 4 ай бұрын
It is part of my graduate school studies at the University of Arizona - so getting the job = getting into graduate school. Typically getting into such a position involves finding a field-based science discipline you are interested in and working your way into funded projects/universities that are addressing relevant questions. Take home: need to go to school

Man Caden, you started something with that song by Wiz Kalifa. I'm telling my age on this, it was a son by Billy Joel decades ago called "Leave a Tender Moment Alone". I loved it but hadn't heard it a geological age! But I found a version better than Joel's by a group from the Neatherlands: Robin Crauwels Jasper Erckens Ben Vanderweyden - Leave a tender moment alone: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYW9YZRvpMllgs0 . Great words IMHO.

Great points you made that are applicable from undergrad to Ph.D level study. Reading the classics is a great way to distract yourself for a few hours from your studies. In grad school, I never did it the easy way. When I was almost finished with my geology required coursework, I took a dive into grad-level Medieval English History courses, my first history courses since freshman year in college. Fortunately, the study and writing skills I employed in Geology transferred over well. My biggest honor was when a respected history professor asked for a copy of a paper I wrote to keep on file. She wanted it so that when her grad students complained about not having the time to produce a good paper on short notice, she could whip out my paper and have them look it over, as she considered it a great paper and it was produced by a Geology grad student. I like to think that over the years there were some history grads pissed off at me! The critical factor to learn by grad school is good time management. I was an awful procrastinator when it came to writing, waiting until the last minute to begin the task (I was better doing the research beforehand). Case in point, I procrastinated organizing my thesis proposal one spring semester. After classes were finished, my advisor pulled me aside on a Friday afternoon and said we'd do my proposal on Monday before my thesis committee. I did pull the proposal together over the weekend. It passed and one committee member said it was one of the best proposals she'd heard. But my advisor said I was one of the worst procrastinators he'd had, and yet I could pull together papers on short notice. He just wondered what I could do if I actually spent time on it. I had to agree with him, aand even 40+ years later I still do.
