About how cowboys only carried guns to show and were actually bad about it i would say there is a reference to it in the game, in a random encounter in practically any town except Saint Denis you could find a person showing his friend his new revolver and playing with it while his friend tells him to be careful, then two things can happen, he either accidentally shoots his friend dead or he shoots his own leg and walk away like it doesn't hurt because of embarrassment

The most popular pistol in the old west was the Colt S.A.A, which had no "safety" position of any kind except the hammer down on an empty chamber. Since this meant a reduction of your immediate ammo capacity by 20%, many "especially confident" pistol owners loaded the 6th round anyway and left the hammer down on it. This converts the hammer into a gigantic exposed firing pin, waiting for something to bang on it. If the newspaper reports are any indication, the most common result of loading 6 rounds was a drunken pistolero sitting down to take a crap without remembering to take his pistol belt off first, thus causing his gun to fall backwards out of the holster, land on the hammer and fire a round into the ceiling of the privy.

I’ve always wondered about the historical validity of the poncho in Red Dead Online, as you’ve never (to my knowledge) mentioned them. Were they simply never adopted by the white cowboy, or were they never really used at all? I’m asking because I love the kind of look TMWNN had towards the end of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and I was wondering if it’s pure Hollywood fantasy to wear a poncho or if there’s some historical backing to it. Side note: the day after I finished my own gunfighter outfit based on your lawman, outlaw and cowboy videos I saw the community announcement for this! But as always, great work and thanks for making our experiences in the game more accurate and more interesting, really appreciate the amount of research and effort that goes into these.
@ManvsHistory

Thanks, Daniel! I've looked at thousands of photos of cowboys in the West, but haven't seen one wearing one of these ponchos. That doesn't mean it didn't happen- in fact, I think it's highly likely that some did so. I just haven't seen evidence of it. But knowing how much interaction/exchange took place across the southern border in both directions, I'm sure it did. It certainly was functional, and it looked cool as well. My understanding is that this style was originally brought to Mexico from Chile- migrating north over time.

Great video. I was surprised to hear Wild Bills preference was a Colt 1851 Navy (cap/ball/powder) revolver which was a bit dated at that point, since cartridge's were showing up. I was also very surprised because when that point came up in the video, I was sitting here playing with my Colt 1851 Navy. Love BP shooting.

I think that the reason I love red dead 2 is the same reason I love Robert Frost's poetry, both embody a sort of romance that appeals to me as a man, a sense of our relationship with the wild, and a feeling of isolation. When playing, the missions and combat, while fun, was never what felt the most real to me, what felt real, and maybe even what I enjoyed most, was riding through the woods quietly, having not encountered another person for several in-game days, and I, even if only having played for 10 minutes i also began to feel alone in nature.

@@ManvsHistory The channel is still surviving! Haha Took a quick detour to make some introduction videos for some projects I do with my students (*the Renaissance got a March Madness themed twist this year, and the Paris Peace Conferences were the location of the new season of Survivor) Not too much of an audience for those videos lol but the students were into it! Hopefully I'll be back in the databases looking into accuracy and authenticity soon!

Stumbled upon this channel last week and I absolutely love your videos! It would be really cool to see a historically accurate gambler character video where you go into the various games Rockstar left out like Faro or dice before showing how professional gamblers would’ve dressed. Keep up the great work, love the channel!

This is a very interesting educational experience! Kind of reminds me of when FrankieOnPC used to tell these WW1/WW2 stories while he would play Battlefield games. I definitely gonna check out some more!

I love how that distinction between gunfighters and cowboys is actually suggested in the gameplay of the story mode. If you look at the way Arthur and John use the Dead Eye mechanic, Arthur's aim is way more steady and the soundscape is far more relaxed, with a ticking clock. John's aim is a bit more wobbly, and you can hear his heartbeat. It's like Arthur is a more natural and trained gunslinger, whereas John is a cowboy who can handle himself in a fight.
