Arthur's hat could be tailor-made. But I'm not sure that's a good idea for someone constantly on the run. I always find it fascinating to see these old prices. Like 85 cents for a vest on average seems so unreal. And thinking about that: I think an interesting video(series?) could be "How much would/did living in X cost for a day/week/month?" X here being either a real city/town or a RDR2-city/town for which the math is done with a comparable IRL-city/town. Then looking at some everyday-items and -services and how much they cost for what could have been considered "lower class", "middle class", and "upper class", and maybe what professions would have payed enough on average to allow that level of living. Those everyday-items being the bare minimum like "bread" for the "lower class", and more "luxurios" items like sugar, honey, or soap for the "middle class" and "upper class".
@MOONSUN4Life4 жыл бұрын
Fascinating! The part about hat customization was particularly interesting. I had never even given a thought as to why hats looked the way they did, just assumed that was how people wore their hats back then, not unlike some people today wear baseball caps the wrong way for no particular reason. I would not have imagined that there was actually a practical reason why some wore their hats the way they did. I was completely unsurprised by how outrageously inaccurate the prices in Red Dead Online are, but I was still shocked to see just how overpriced they are. I mean, a markup of over twenty-five THOUSAND percent (yet we get four percent of the historically accurate payout for bounties)... Really??? Dang, Rockstar, that's what I call cutthroat! I'm a costume design student and I absolutely love rdr2, so I've always been curious as to the accuracy of the clothing in rdr2, as I know that movies and such often make mistakes, exaggerate, or just simply make design choices favouring their own personal preference over the historical accuracy of the garments, so this video was really interesting! The most expensive saddle in the 1898 Sears & Roebucks Catalog was $32. Most were around $15. That said, the days of the cowboy would have been a bit before RDR2 begins, and it seems like many things were a little more expensive then (c.1870 vs 1898).

3:15 Is a Gamblers hat and was not as common. These hats though were not that hot nor heavy and were considered great for travelling. It is hard to find one today because they were...well...leather and left untreated tend to not last long. That being said, it is a true hat and very true to that era. Many used them for rain and snowy areas, because of the resistance of never getting soaked--unlike felt and fur. The reason you don't see them in pics is that they shine and this caused issues with pictures of the time. These hats, if original, because of the rarety are highly collectable. You need to find a catalogue during that era, 1880 to say 1890. After that, they seem to be less common. And a true version of this hat exactly how he has it, not fur nor felt. Saint-Denis would have carried this hat though I doubt other towns around Red Dead would have. I doubt Sears would have sold it, however, department stores like Goldwater's or even Macy's (Which did exist at the time) would have had it. These are the type of stores that would have carried it not a Sears. People assume Sears was the majour store at the time, it wasn't. It was founded in 1892 and while Sears did own a store before this and a catalogue it never amounted to much. Sear's store started out as a Watch/Jeweler seller until it incorporated in 1892. By this time, Sear's had left and sold it, he then joined A. C. Roebuck and the current Sears was born. Using it for Red Dead though isn't correct historically, the gang probably never even heard of Sears. MY point, you looking for something that Sears couldn't have carried because it didn't exist at the time of that hat (Which was more like the 1870s to early 1880s.) By the time of Red Dead 2, that hat was out of style though people still wore them.

You should do a historical accuracy of tonic prices and if they even had a effect on your person.

Hats like the "Tillman hat" are historically accurate for poor farmhands on latin-america, from early 1800 all the way to late 1900's.

Thank you for more quarantine content! I'm wondering if you've ever heard of the firearms company Uberti. They seem to specialize in manufacturing working models of some of the firearms that would be featured in RDR2. I'm not sure if videos relating to firearms are problematic or not when talking about history with some of KZbins newer policies, but I think it might be interesting to see how their products compare to the weapons featured in RDR2.
@ManvsHistory4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that would be interesting. Solid idea.

I never saw that 152$ coat jesus christ! I could buy a whole state with that! I never thought those prices were overkill until I saw your videos! (At least not that much because that's pretty obvious they were cranked up.)

Many of the coats in the game appear to be frock coats or palatots of earlier patters.
@GhostRider-on6bz4 жыл бұрын
There is one pair of wrist braces in the game, they came with the second outlaw pass so not available now sadly but they should make more of them and make them purchasable... for cash. I think they should add more cool cowboy hats so that people can have a bit more individuality and less ridiculous things like the cavalier hat etc which are only really there to appeal to the GTA mindset players. Great video mate!

beware minor spoiler! Very interesting video as alway. I highly appreciate your series on RDR2 and hope for many more videos to come. Just one thought on the leather hat: I know, that they are not very common and most likely would be considered kind of exotic in the games region and time but I do like that, because Arthur's hat in the single player game is his "lucky hat" that he has worn for many years and eventually it is passed on to John Marston. In that context I do not mind that they chose this kind of hat considering that is meant to be outstanding. One word on the leather hat beeing very hot. I have worn a heavy bull-leather hat multiple times while on safari in africa and I wore it when I went hiking in the Namibian desert on an extremely hot day with temperatures rising to 113 and I will admit, that a heavy leather hat is hot compared to one made out of linen, but it is perfectly fine even under the most extreme conditions.

Unfortunately some of the best looking fur coats in the game are locked in story mode, my favorite one being the shotgun coat. Technically there is a version in online but with no fur on the outside, just I the collar and cuffs, you can make them at the trader. As for the Gauntlets you actually have two versions of it, one for each Outlaw Pass. 🤠👍🏼 Great video and great hat stories! 😂 please keep them coming.

There is a story of a man taken to court in England and convicted for the hat he wore. He was wearing the Stovepipe Hat, which was the latest fashion at the time, when the police arrested him, took him to court were he was convicted because the hat was said to frighten the horses. I am not sure if this is a true story or not but the stovepipe hat became so popular even the police wore them.
