In the beginning, paying off debt might seem impossible. Without a plan, it can be hard to know what step to take first.
In this video, I show you what tool I used to start my debt payoff journey.
It helped me decide which method I wanted to use, and it showed me the outcome for my decisions.
Need motivation? See how much interest you can save based on the method you choose, and how long it will take you to pay it all off.

J F I would say put any extra income to your debt. Use the website unbury.me to see how long it will take you to get out of debt. Also if you can get some extra income. I never did that and I know it would have helped me get out of debt faster.

Graham I hope you are doing well on your debt free journey. I’m also on a 82,000 debt free journey for 2020. The most difficult part for me is seeing so much money leave my pocket and go towards my creditors. The pain is enough to let me know I will never get this deep again. What’s the worse part of your journey?

Miko, I don't know if you read these but this video changed my life! I became focused on using the template you shared here, and it took a few years but I am now debt free! I still remember watching this for the first time a few years back, and being horrified when I plugged in my own numbers and saw how much of an impact a few extra dollars a month could have in paying down my debt. Team Avalanche! I am a huge fan of yours, and can't thank you enough for sharing your system (and this excellent spreadsheet template) here, thank you for everything! If anyone is reading this and just getting started- YOU CAN DO IT!

I have been using the snowball method to pay off debt, but I decided to start the avalanche method instead. I was so confused because when I plugged my numbers into the calculator, I kept getting the same interest and the same amount of time no matter which method I used. Then I realized that it was because my debts are already in order for both methods! My smallest debt has the highest interest rate, and so on. Too funny!

I am tired of paying credit card and medical bills every month - it is to the point I don't want to look at the balances I don't want to look at my credit score because I know I am going it is going to make me feel ill!!! But today I face it head on!! Today is the first paycheck of the year - I have our "by paycheck" budget set up - I know what I want to pull out in cash to start my envelopes....but now I am going to face the credit/debt balances and set up my avalanche method! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH for explaining in such a approachable way!!!

I tried the snowball method many years ago (I'm talking before home computers and Excel) and it didn't work for me. I am a very visual person so I think because I couldn't see the progress month over month, I got discouraged. I'm excited to get started on this Excel sheet, I think it will be helpful for me because I'll be able to see my progress. On a side note, I am now working from home so I'm going to sell my car so I will be able to throw the money I was spending on the car payment towards my debt. Thankfully my son who will be in Japan for 3 years has said I can use his car while he's gone. It's paid off so I'll be paying the insurance, gas, and maintenance. And since I was already paying for those things for my car, it doesn't change what I have already budgeted for those items. I just discovered your channel and I can't thank you enough for all you do. I'm looking forward to going through your other videos as I have time.

I am so glad I found this video. Because I started watching you after you paid off your debt. I'm still paying off debt myself. Your videos are so helpful. Don't get me wrong. However, I hear you constantly saying, I'm debt free. It's important for me to see you in this stage of your life for me to be more relatable to you. When you constantly say Ryen has debt and you don't in your videos it somewhat feels like a dig, but I know it's really not. You have worked SO HARD and I appreciate your teachings so much. You are an inspiration. But I needed to see this side of your journey to see you from all angles.

Thank you! I am awful at maths and it would have taken me days to work out snowball v avalanche on each debt, this spreadsheet worked it out in seconds for everything and I can play around with numbers and extra payments as I go along and it calculates it. It is a godsend. My interest rates are very similar so the dates and total interest difference is almost non existent but thanks to this spreadsheet I KNOW the snowball is best option for seeing progress for me without the stress of knowing if I have done the maths right or not, KNOWING I am not wasting my time and my money. WOW. Thank you so very much for sharing this and explaining it properly. I cannot believe this is a free resource, it is fantastic.

Steve H. Is definitely is awesome. I’m actually using it on my debt free journey right now. Without it I would not have seen how much in interest I saved when I moved my credit cards to one promotion card with 0% for 12 months. When I saw the savings I felt so happy. It works and it gives you that feeling that you can accomplish it. Are you on a debt free journey also?

You’re a very smart lady!! 😀💰 👩‍🎓 That is very refreshing in today’s times! I’m definitely following you 👍 and try to learn all that you’re presenting, to help pay off this [CRAZY] debt that I’m in.... I feel like it’s KILLING me🤦‍♀️; but after watching couple of your videos, I feel like I may be able to do this💁‍♀️ Listening to D.Ramsey, I felt like he was too hard-core to follow.... 😖, but I think your methods are doable.

Thank you for making me face this head to head. I just got into budgeting, got my book and I've been working on my emergency savings and have already paid off a loan and 3 Credit cards. Still got lots more to go 😫😫😫 i didn't realise how much I was paying in interest on all my cards, this really put me face to face with them. I'm even more geared up to finish paying them off as fast as possible. These credit card companies are making a ridiculous amount of money in interest charges alone !

Norma Jean use it as your motivation to pay them off fasttttt. I had one card that was collecting $180 monthly in interest alone!! After my 12 months interest free promo was up I was hit with over $3000 in interest last year which was added to my principle, this meant I was now paying interest on the interest! The card had a $8000 balance , I had a big wake up call in mid May when I found Dave Ramsey , the budget mom and other financial gurus on KZbin . I'l managed to pay that card off this month! I'm not rich or anything close. Just worked extra hard and used any extra funds I could . Still got a long way to go on my other debts but paying that card off gave me the biggest relieve!

Thank you so much for sharing the spreadsheet ! It’s really motivating to see it all laid out. I’m over $70K in debt right now (student loans, car note (new Mercedes 🤦🏾‍♀️) and a couple credit cards) I should be debt free by December 2021 using the avalanche method!

Econmajor88 how is your debt free journey going? I’m also on a debt free journey to pay off 82,000 in a year using as many tricks as I can find that are legal lol. #handclap to you for taking the first step to financial freedom. The one thing I hate about this journey is seeing ALL that money leave my account each month when I zero out my account.

I did a mixture of both! I kept my student loads for last, because they are low interest rates. Even though they have a balance smaller then a couple credit cards. I did start with my credit card debt, organized it from smallest to largest. Paid those off, then I moved to my car! DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!!

I've been following you for months and bought your book. I've done a lot of work to get myself ready for my debt payoff journey but I'm so discouraged lately. I swear I get an unexpected bill for some random thing at least once a month. And it always ends up costing me $1k or more. I bought my first house last year and it was an unexpected move. These bills are often but not always related to the move in some way. I don't know how to even start saving when I'm always trying to cover these big unexpected bills that come up way too regularly. I have FOUR jobs (one full time and 3 part time) and I'm a single mom of two with hardly any help. It's just so discouraging 🥺. I want so bad to get ahead. Seems the more I take on to do that, the more the universe throws at me. I can't even put away $100 for savings or emergency. "You either have an income problem or a spending problem". I don't have an income problem and it's not a spending issue. I've already cut everything that can be cut since starting my journey. Do you have any advice on how to start saving when this keeps happening?

I've been using this for 4 months now and it's worth it's weight in gold if it had weight. :):) But one thing that's frustrating is to have everything in place and something comes up. I was inspecting my truck and realized my tires were in real bad shape. Critical wear that wasn't visible unless you were lying on the ground. So BAM, an $1100 set back. It's not a real bad set back but it's disheartening to add to the spreadsheet and see months tack on vs fall off. But I am determined to be done by year end. I only want to be dealing with my house, utilities and food.

Thank you for being honest re: self confidence issues and purchases. From age 30-34 I made a lot of poor choices because of them, too. I’m now 43...and I’m still paying for poor choices that my younger self made. I no longer have all the junk that I purchased then, nor would I even want them today... Expensive lesson learned.
