RAID5 is a disaster waiting to happen. If you are in the IT industry you will probably come across a RAID5 disaster at some point in your career. It's dangerous because it takes too long to rebuild after a drive failure and it puts stress on the other drives while it's rebuilding. Use RAID1 or RAID10. Keep 2 hot spares in the machine (it's 10x safer than 1 hot spare) so it rebuilds immediately and look at the drive lights at least once a week.

Is a Hot Spare a seperate disk or allocated disk space on each disk?

@@BichaelStevens do you got the answer for this? I'm confused about the hot spare thing. I just bought 4 hard drives 3 for RAID and 1 for Backup in case of failure happen. but if I use it for hot spare do I does not need to change the failed hard drive immediately because the hot spare will do its job automatically?
@BichaelStevens3 жыл бұрын
@@hakimhomecent1619 My memory is shit but I remember that hot swap is an active drive sitting in reserve ready to immediately kick in after a drive fails.
@hakimhomecent16193 жыл бұрын
@@BichaelStevens i see, that's a pretty cool function. but still, I don't want a failed disk to sit still on my server, if I want to swap it out do I need to shut down the server first or I can do it while it's running? and when I do change it, will the new drive become a hot spare or the current hot spare will revert itself into the hot spare again and the new drive will become one of the RAID 5 Array?
