Your ending is exactly what I was thinking. Yes I know RAID, yes I know hot swaps. Yes it was a hell of a lot easier to get myself to do it once I'd seen it. Thanks for your vids. I've learned a lot about my 420+

I have question. I have 8 bay nas. 8th one is hot spare. 4th fails. So 8th replaces 4th. Now I get new drive. - Should I move "old" hot spare to 4th bay where failed drive was and install new hot spare in bay 8? Or will bay 4 be my new hotspare?

Can I create a hot spare out of one of the 4 existing drives I have already in an shr array? I have 4 X 8TB drives with only 7tb out of the 21tb used.... Or do I need to start over??

Can you do this across 2 different Synology NAS Devices if they both have the same drives? This would provide additional fault tolerance around the Power Supply going bad or some other internal component of the Primary NAS Server.

Very informative, thanks. Can a hot spare by an external USB drive plugged into the NAS of the same size? Or it needs to be SATA connected

When one has RAID1 with two hdd and a third Hdd as hotswap, is it possible to use a fourth HDD to automatic backup the other drives? Sorry NAS newbie. Your vids are great and learned quite a lot so far. Thank you.

A couple questions: 1) Does the HotSpare wait until a drive has COMPLETELY failed before it kicks in or can it kick in while the original drive is in the process of failing (increasing bad sectors)? 2). In your example, once Drive 2 failed & Drive 4 (the hot spare) kicked in what is your next step? i.e. once you had purchased a replacement drive for Drive 2. Does that replacement Drive 2 now become the NEW Hot Spare? Or do you some how swap them around so that original Drive 4 returns to being the Hot Spare and the Replacement Drive 2 resumes the role of Original Drive 2?

Only on drive total failure

Set up weekly SMART checks and change out manually when you see bad results

Needs total failure of drive before hot swap takes over.

i'm assuming you cannot do this you know i've been told otherwise: 4 hard drives all linked together in raid 5 with 1parody and have one of those drives as hot swap AKA the parity hard drive. is basically also the hotswap drive

Shr1 or shr2 or a. Hot spare, which is better
@xSeiryu4 жыл бұрын
SH1 and SH2 are just Synology Hybrid Raid 1 or 2 which is similar to RAID 5 or 6... There are some differences though SHR1 can withstand 1 drive failure and SHR2 can withstand 2... The hot spare is only there in case of a drive failure within your RAID array.

I assume the 'hot spare' would be used by the first RAID group that needs it if there were several RAIDS in a NAS box.
