We enjoy learning how to create our own electronic projects and how each component works to make those project operate. Showing you how to create a DIY automated sound device for beginners seemed like a great pace to start. This video show you how to create your own simple, basic DIY motion activated device using a relay module and a motion sensor. It is perfect for beginners or someone who is interested in learning how a relay module works and would like to see an easy motion sensor project from start to finish. The HC-SR501 motion sensor uses infrared technology. It is ideal for detecting movement for energy saving and security, remote camera operation, and outdoor security lighting and alarms. The relay module works will with this PIR motion sensor for device switching in response to detecting occupant movement. This video shows you how to create a proper relay module connection. They can be used remotely, however, this project uses a relay that is activated by use of the PIR motion detector. DIY motion sensor projects are also great for seasonal displays.
There are several ways to power this project but we chose to use the most basic. You can connect this project to an Arduino board and that may show up in a later video. This video will be the foundation for future relay module project videos.

Hi there, I just want to acknowledge that you have some awesome video content. Your transparency and in-depth detail is honourable because most channels that do this electronic stuff only do it to show off and are not interested in helping others learn. After all, that's the reason most people watch these DIY channels, to learn and possibly create something new. Also for myself, I have been searching for exactly this information to help me with my Trigger Bear. So you have given me exactly what I needed. Two questions if I may? - Are you hooked up to Arduino in this video, or were you just powering it via that white lead with your PC? That part threw me a bit as Arduino was never mentioned. Secondly - What are those hook style probes you have attached to the wires? They would come in very handy. !Keep up the great work! ***!New Sub!***

Wow Tania, thanks for the comment. Great to hear from you and I totally appreciate it. I did not use Arduino in this video. The relay is used as a trigger to turn on the mp3 board when the sensor detects motion. Everything is powered by 5v. You need 5v to activate the coil in the relay, that is the trigger. In the video I used a breadboard power supply. Go to Facebook and search "#bmonsteralarm" and you can see a schematic. If you do, let me know how it goes. The hooks are called Silicone Minigrabbers and you can find them on Amazon. They are kinda cheap and flimsy though, but very convenient. you can adjust time and sensitivity directly on the motion sensor with a screw driver. The only downside to this is that you can only run one track. You might be interested in this vide - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJLQnXSknrplpLM - this setup is Arduino with a mp3 shield. You load songs onto an SD card and you have have a lot of tracks (mp3s). You can make a motion activated player like I did here with a random shuffle. Your mp3 choice is only limited by the SD card size. I hope that schematic helps you. 👍

Hey there! Thanks for the sub. I have never used an mp3 player with my Pico but it appears that some poeple have used a DFPlayer with pico. I'm personally not a fan of DFPlayer because I never had good luck with it. It's cheap for a reason I suppose. I am wondering if you can use the Raspberry Pi Pico (RP2040) SD Card and use Adafruit MP3 Decoder library to play tracks - I have never done this either but this may be helpful www.digikey.com/en/maker/projects/raspberry-pi-pico-rp2040-sd-card-example-with-micropython-and-cc/e472c7f578734bfd96d437e68e670050 I am familiar with the Sparkfun MP3 Player Sheild for Uno / Sparkfun Redboard - www.sparkfun.com/products/12660 I have purchased 12 or so of these shields and they work great with the Sparkfun Redboard. The question is, how many random tracks are you wanting to have and does it absolutely need to be on Raspberry Pi Pico?

Nice video. I have 1 question for you. I did basically the same thing as you. A few differences though. My issue is, how do I get it to play and stop? I have that same module you used. Had to switch the resistors on the board for it to go on when detected and off when there's movement. For some reason mine goes on, plays the song for maybe 8 seconds goes off then plays it again. It doesn't just play/stop when motion/no motion. Not sure if I explained that well enough to understand, but if you could give any insight as to what I might be doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated.
@BMonsterLaboratory
@BMonsterLaboratory Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Sorry it took so long to reply. Are you using a 5v relay module? If so, make sure the jumper select is on the "H" option. It's the jumper pack you can put on a set of 3 pins located on the board. If H is the set of pins you have the cover on, it means that the relay module is configured to trigger when a high signal is received on the "IN" pin. As for the motion sensor, make sure the jumper select is on the "L" option. The L option is a single trigger option when motion is detected. Further detection is blocked until the output returns to LOW at the end of the time delay. You also have 2 potentiometers on the motion sensor. The one closest to the yellow jumper pack is for sensitivity - the distance for detection. The potentiometer next to that (furthest from the yellow jumper) is the time delay. Adjust this potentiometer for a little longer than the length of the song. You can adjust time delay from 1sec to around 3min. You may need to play with this a bit to get it right. So if the motion sensor jumper select is set to "L" and you adjust your timer delay to the length (or just a bit longer) than your mp3, you should be good to go. Let me know if you still need help. I have put this together so many times.. I have more pictures I can send you if needed. Best of luck! 🖖

Hi Eli. You can't do random sound files using this. You would need a sound module that plays random files, probably one that holds a mini SD card that you can load the songs on to. Some of those modules you can use with or without Arduino. I like the idea though!

I have also tested the sound module and it works fine when I use the battery pack and button. But then when I try and power it from the breadboard still using the button it does not work. If I use the battery pack and wire the button wires to the relay it also does not work. Any thoughts? Relay jumpers are set to H and motion jumpers are set to L. Thanks in advance.

for the relay: +/- are going to be your 5v power and ground, the In terminal is going to be your middle pin (signal) of the motion sensor. The pos/neg pin of the motion sensor will be connected to your 5v and ground. for the mp3 player module, you have a black and red wire - black goes to ground and red goes to 5v power. connect your blue and green button wires to NO and COM. if it triggers too often you can adjust the timer on the motion sensor by turning orange potentiometer clockwise. I just set mine up again and works prefect. if you need pictures, just ask. I can send them to you. 👍💪

Hey there! great to hear from you and thank you for the compliment. Yes, you can power a 9v motor while using this relay as a switch. Although this relay is normally used to separate very high voltage from 5v, it would work for you. You just need a 5v power supply to trigger the the relay to turn on the item you have connected on the other side. If you need an example, just ask. I'll post one on the facebook page. Good luck to you!

Hi there. I'm trying to get a similar result with a DFPlayer mini, but the relay module is far to slow to activate it properly. It requires a momentary action like from a push button switch. Will it work if I use a positive edge triggered D-type flip flop with a PIR sensor as a clock input? To start playing this mp3 module needs momentary connection from the players GND to one of the functions, so I was planning to connect the flip flops data pin to GND, PIR sensor to clock pin, and the output pin to one of the functions. I was also planning to connect output to master reset so it returns to initial state every time. I'm also wondering if I have to independently supply voltage from the power source to the flip flops VCC and GND pins. Thank you in advance, you rock :D

hey KainKnox! If you're wanting to connect an mp3 player (with SD card) to a PIR motion sensor I would suggest Sparkfun mp3 player shield. Can you help me understand the necessity of the relay? I built mine without a relay and it works fine. If there is a purpose I would love to know. THanks.
@BMonsterLaboratory
@BMonsterLaboratory 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. I built this when I first started playing around with circuits and for me it was an easy visual to see how the relay replaces the manual switch I removed from the module. I wanted an automatic switch that activated on motion and not have to press it. The relay was also pretty cheap and could be mounted easily. There are also screw ports on the relay so that means I didn't have to solder (something I was pretty bad at....and maybe still am ! ). 99% of the time you'll see a relay used to separate very high voltage trigger from very low voltage triggers but Overall, it was just a little experiment that worked nicely and was happy that I could use it for a practical purpose. You could use a MOSFET to get the job done but back then I don't think I even knew what one was...there may be other ways to do it as well. Thanks for asking. I should make a follow up video on this. Merry Christmas to you...hope to hear from ya again 👊👊

@BMonsterLaboratory 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! What you're asking for would probably be easier using Arduino Nano. The code would be very simple and we could clean up the look a bit. I would like to revisit this video using a Nano rather than a relay and maybe some LED lights as an option. I used the relay and a sound module so I could put this together without having to program a microcontroller and while it does work, this 5v relay is really designed to isolate high voltage and lower voltage in a circuit. It allows 2 isolated circuits to connect, such as a 5v with 120v or higher using an optocoupler but in this video I only use 5v. The LED may work if you split the wire coming out of the "NO" port but you would have to add a resistor to your LED so you don't burn it out (probably a 220ohm resistor). The jumpers i use are just standard breadboard jumpers. I have a couple breadboard power supplies but the best one by far is the Elegoo brand power supply that came in my Arduino kit. check out the Amazon product with ASIN: B08RY45QJ3. Feel free to send a mssg on facebook or email at bmonsterlab@yahoo.com if you get stuck.

Hi Rob. I like the idea! I haven't tried it but you could probably us a voltage divider and run both the player and LEDs . Honestly, at this point it would be better to use Arduino Nano. It has 5v pins for the motion sensor and pwm pins for the LEDs. You could even make your LED eyes dim and brighten for a glow effect and in the end it would probably be more compact. Hi Jae kim! There may be a way, I haven't explored that yet...not with this same setup. Perhaps I will in the future. If you want an outdoor motion sensor with music I would recommend the Sparkfun mp3 player shield for the Arduino Uno. You can see my video here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJLQnXSknrplpLM There are other mp3 player boards, but this one is the one I am familiar with and it works very well. You can load an sd card with many different mp3's if you want and you can shuffle them a well so that you don't get the same mp3 playing at each activation. You can connect the Sparkfun mp3 player shield to a passive speaker system (uses external power) using an aux cable. In this video I connected to an LG sound bar. For outdoor use you could also connect it to a PA speaker with an 2.5mm aux cable. There's not a lot to the Sparkfun setup and the code is posted on Facebook for you to use. Hello.... I'm working on another DIY project, and when I searched for the MY-H1650M V2.0 sound module, your video came up. I have FIVE of these modules and intend on putting them in an audio automation system, or audio chain, I won't get too detailed about it here. My question is, have you purchased more than one of these 1650M modules? All five that I have, I can plug the USB cable into each one. The green light will light steady, but the "disk" is never detected by Win10. I've also tried it on WinXP, and on whatever the latest version of MacOS is -- I'm not a Mac person. I have tried plugging it into my Android phone, too, and it never detects it nor mounts a disk, doesn't prompt me to format anything. I can sit here and look at the Device Manager on both my PCs and no USB disk ever shows up. Second question, have you had any trouble with these and am I missing a step? The original instructions step-by-step does not say "plug in USB cable, open file manager window..." -- it actually says to connect +5VDC to the primary taps, not the battery +VDC taps, then connect the USB cable to it and then to the PC. I have tried just plugging each new module straight to USB, no other soldering the power taps or anything, sliding the on/off switch, I'm hopeless at this point. Have you had any issues with the modules? --or have I just burned up $50 on bad product? Thanks for your video, though, it was an interesting project, and also verified my connections to the sound module were correct like someone else. This thing has aggravated me for a while now. Looking forward to your reply!

Hi Brian. Sorry to hear you're having issues with your mp3 modules. I plugged mine right into the computer usb without issues. I did it on my windows 10 and now my windows 11 pc. I'm wondering if you need to update your usb drivers? have you tried other usb ports on your computer? have you tried connecting to another windows 10 computer? As awesome as WinXP was, it is not supported by anything these days. The module came with a sound file on it. Can you push the button and get that sound file to play? The only time I have it connected to usb is when I'm adding or removing an mp3 file. Any other time I use it I will have it connected to 5v breadboard power supply the 3AA battery pack it came with. I don't believe I have connected both usb and 5v power to the module at the same time. I will check the manual and see If I can find anything else.

@@BMonsterLaboratory so, I should have checked this first before I wrote this. But, lesson learned, and maybe others will pick up on this if they are having problems. If it does not auto-detect a disk under Win11, Win10, or WinXP (yep, it's compatible with it), then CHANGE the cable! Ugh... I had two cables here on my desk, which both should have no excuse for not working. I went to the Dollar store, DG, last night, and bought a fresh cable, $5. I plug it in this morning, and just like that... it appears. I can play the song onboard the memory chip... move files, whatever. I still owe your video here many thanks for keeping the gears turning in my head about the matter! The support isn't that good on certain things you buy from the Net, sometimes that common sense will kick in, though, and it'll surprise ya! Thanks again for the reply!

hi there! i don't think so. You can put an mp3 on this module that is up to 2.5min long and after that, it would stop. You need something to continually trigger the motion sensor. A better option for you may be the sparkfun mp3 player shield kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJLQnXSknrplpLM Of course, your setup would be different from what I have in this video. you can repeat mp3, or shuffle them, or play a really long mp3 and trigger a reset when motion is detected. How good are you at soldering? Soldering the header pins would be the hardest part. There is also a popular DFPlayer Mini module for Arduino but honestly, I'm not a fan of it. Hey there! great to hear from you and thank you for the compliment. I put links to the sound module, the relay, and the motion sensor in the description but i'm wondering if they've changed the type of board... perhaps there's a newer version. The back of my sound module says MY_H1650M_V2.0 Make sure you're using the NO/COM screw terminal for the wire where the button was....the button you cut off the sound module. The middle pin of the motion sensor should be connected to the IN screw terminal. Power for both the motion sensor and relay are provided by the breadboard power supply. The yellow jumper on the relay is over the "H" pin. A green light should be on indicating your relay has power. When motion is detected the relay will have a red light turn on and your mp3 should play. I rebuild this exact setup using 3 AA batteries as a power source rather than a breadboard power supply. I'm happy to share it with you if it might help. Let me know if any of this help....happy to help you get this up and running.

@@bernieacevedo9773 The HC-SR501 motion sensor covers a range of up to approximately 7 meters at 120 degrees. With that size of range, you could cover 4 bowls with motion detection. when you start adding more items to be triggered by the motion sensor, you'll want a multi channel relay. I have an 8 channel relay and will include that in my demo. I"ll post it on here...not a problem. Remember, if your current is over 1amp, don't use a standard breadboard. Your setup is going to look different if you connect a strip of 300 LEDs compared to a strip of 10 LEDS. I like the WS2812B LED strips because they look great and operate at 5v. I'll include this in a video, it will be easier to explain. You can add a battery bank as your power source but if you're operating LEDs plus other items the charge may be depleted quickly. If you're connecting low voltage items then it would be fine.

Hey there! The cords are jumper wires and they come with pin connectors on the end that allow you to attach them to the breadboard (long white plastic thing) and devices such as the motion sensor. Ideally, you would 3d print or purchase a pir motion sensor case that you could mount the sensor. You could set this up remotely with 5v dc battery supply if you need to. The white device is the HC-SR501 Pir Motion IR Sensor which I usually buy from Amazon. You can not record directly but you can add one mp3 recording to this board. It can be up to almost 3min in length I believe. You can record sounds form a video on your pc or go to freesound.org and download a free sound. There are many other places as well. You can make a miniature version of this. This was somethin I set up on a breadboard for fun and some people have used it in their projects. You would have to make it compact and give it a case or a small box to hold it, but it's totally doable. Do a Facebook search for #bmonsteralarm (just type bmonsteralarm into the search) and you should get an old post that shows a diagram of this setup. There are other ways to set this up if you think you may need something different. If you have any questions while you're building it, i'm happy to help.

Hello BMonster laboratory I need 5 super high sound from the predator movie sound that is motion activated by movement and ac supply
@BMonsterLaboratory
@BMonsterLaboratory Жыл бұрын
Hi there! So you want a loud predator "clicking" sound that he makes in the movie when motion is detected? How loud are we talking about? I'm using an 8ohm speaker in this video. Four loud playback you'll need a speaker that's amplified. You need 5 separate set ups (stations) that detect motion? If all this is correct, there's a better way to do it. Check this out learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/mp3-trigger-hookup-guide-v24?_ga=2.19285624.1342155786.1687919175-419616546.1677727671

sure! make sure you have an 8ohm speaker and 1 mp3 song or sound. connect the mp3 board to your pc and a folder should appear. You can delete the file that it came with. Just add your mp3 and remove the mp3 module from your computer and you should be set. if you get stuck just let me know.

power the board from the battery pack and see if it will play your mp3. If you removed the battery pack like i did, just supply 5v power to the wires. you just plug it in to swap out the mp3 file i believe.

Hey there, i have done all the connections correctly as per in your video but my motion sensor which is working won’t trigger the speaker module. Does it make a difference if you put the jumper on the PIR sensor to HIGH or LOW?
@BMonsterLaboratory
@BMonsterLaboratory Жыл бұрын
That is the trigger select. If you put the jumper on the L, the output is high depending on your time delay setting. If L is selected it will not detect motion until the time delay is up. If you select H, the output is high depending on your time delay setting. If H is selected, motion detection is not blocked and will reset each time there's motion. Also, set your relay jumper on H. When you power it up give it a minute or 2 to calibrate and see how it goes from there.
@BMonsterLaboratory

I have both the motion sensor set on "L" and relay set on "H".

Thank you! I got it to work. Is there a red light in your relay that stays on, as well as the green one. Also I was wondering if you know how I could swap out and use an IR obstacle sensor instead of the PIR sensor for this configuration? How do I find your Facebook page?! Thanks again very much and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too!
@BMonsterLaboratory
@BMonsterLaboratory Жыл бұрын
it's working, great! 👊👊 There is a red power light and a green status light on the relay module. the red light stays on while there's power goin to the module. check out the HW-201 IR module. It has 3 pins- vcc, gnd, and a data pin labeled "out". just connect this module in place of your pir sensor and it should work. This IR module has a working distance of of approx. 1" to 11 or 12" and operates in a voltage range of 3.3 to 5v. You can adjust it's distance using the potentiometer. There's a Facebook link on the KZbin banner at the homepage and linked in most descriptions or you can click here facebook.com/profile.php?id=100059867144068 If you have any other questions, feel free to ask....happy to help!

@BMonsterLaboratory
@BMonsterLaboratory Жыл бұрын
I had to dub over the song due to copyright but it is surprisingly loud for what it is. If you mount it with a little space behind the speaker and if it's a smooth surface behind it, you can get fairly loud sound. It can drive my family nuts, for sure! I just posted a new video with the same mp3 player - check it out here kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4qlc2d8r52dZ5I This time it has a rooster sound on it. It's not real loud but it's also not in a good acoustic position either. Apparently the small silver screw on the pcb is a volume adjuster. I've never fooled with it though.
