In this tutorial I breakdown How to Create a Unique Beam Family in Revit. This is a useful family to understand how to edit as Concrete modelling often presents Structural beam shapes that are far from typical. It is also the same basis for creating all beam family types, be they structural steel beams, Light Gauge Steel beams, Timber Beams or even uniqeu profiles required for bespoke beam systems.

hi, i have a problem, i followed all the steps but when I loaded the family into the project and tried to place the beam, it kept the original length of the family (shown in minute 2:49) the beam doesn't stretch accordingly to my project. Do you know how I can correct this?

Brilliant, thank you!! I am totally with you with regard to avoiding model-in-place where possible. I was concerned that a "top-hat" profile purlin I was looking to create would be over-complicated to go through the family-creation process, but you went to the trouble of alluding to this possibility around the 16:00 mark and now I can proceed without any fear. All of your videos have a been a great help so far. Thanks again. Failte from Scotland :)

Thank you for the tutorial! I've never drawn beams from scratch, and had to make an HQS-beam, which I've never used before!

Great video! I was hoping to edit the front, so the beam keeps its rectangular profile but it's curved from one column to the other :(

Hello, Thanks for the video. Is there a way to make haunched beam (elevation similar to metal decking) family? It appears that we cannot change Front view and Back view while editing family. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi Prerena, Sincerest apologies, I have only seen this query now. I would appreciate a little more information to help you out if possible - from what I understand from your question the way to add this "metal decking" style of elevation would be to use a repeating void within the family that cuts through the beam to create the profile as you have described. Sorry about the lateness of the reply but I hope this is in some way informative. Niall

Dear Sir, how about beam with duct like box culvert?

Hi Giri, Just looking to confirm your question so I can best help. Are you looking for a beam that has a hollow culvert running the length of the beam or are you looking to place an ope through the beam (across the section if that makes any sense), Niall
