I moved the Project Base Point to the map coordinates but it was just the point that moved - the project stayed where it was.

Only thing I don't do is a full grid. I personally hate grids... cant tell you how many times I've worked off drawings where a grid line gets in the way of things like custom line-types used to indicate specific things. Can get difficult to differentiate what you are looking at especially if they have similar line weights. I usually only grid a starting corner that i then place my project origin to. In fact, most firms that I have worked with over the years do not use full grids (a couple when i first started back in 08 did bust most have moved away from it), at least where I am anyways

I've got a project where structural engineer has asked for datum to be set from zero to real world datum. In this case a FFL of 24750 the only way I cab get my reference levels to report right is to set the base point to -24750. Am I missing something?

would you say the grids are more for centerlines? I use them for outside core when doing a wood frame, this is what I dimension off of. I was thinking if I should use grids only for centerlines and ref planes for other, but haven't experimented with that too much I mostly use grids for major grid and sometimes other grid types for other items and then for smaller stuff i use reference planes

Hi Eastudio, Apologies only getting around to replying now. No, I would not consider designating grids for use as centerlines only. Grids really define the structural bays or element alignments within a design. The can be at column CL's as per my example, or could be along a Structural Core wall (which is rarely the centerline of that wall - for example in cavity wall construction the inner wall leaf tends to be structural and the outer aesthetic). The designation of what the Grids are to represent are defined by the project particulars. I have also previously used a primary and secondary grid system, and have also used Reference planes for minor elements such as panelisation fo cleanrooms, external cladding lines etc. Hope this provides some insights for your. Can you show a video on how phasing is shown for Reflected Ceilings? I have done this task, but I am not able to show it with the hidden lines like the walls. I was told because it is not drawn like the walls. How do you rectify this so you can get a model pattern turn to a hidden lines rather than continual lines? Thanks

Hi Leslie, The method for producing Phasing drawings for reflected ceiling is the same, but it is true that he presentation of the ceiling can be tricky (particularly if you are demolishing only parts of the ceiling). In short, do the following. Manage Tab - Phases - Graphic Overrides. Under Projection/Surface, Open the Patterns window beside Demolished. You can apply a foreground and background colour to start. The difficulty is that, as you alluded to, you cannot change the presentation of the pattern linestyle to hidden lines. This is because the pattern is not individual lines/geometry but an array. You will need to create a Pattern that matches your ceiling grid intervals but has a a series of dashes instead of a continous line, and apply that pattern as the Foreground and Background pattern in the Demolished Phase Projection/Surface Pattern dialogue. In my opinion, the demolition does not need to present the grid as you would for the existing or proposed. I would recommend allotting an entirely different pattern for teh ceiling extents to be demolished and refer to that pattern as "Area of ceiling to be removed" or similar in your Demolition Legend on the sheet. Hope this gets you on your way towards a solution. Many institutions recommend not moving the PBP since it creates a lot of confusion. Why would you want to offset it from the Internal Origin? Shouldn't you move the grids instead? What I understood they have now removed the option to unclip the PBP since Revit 2020. P.S. Your vids are great! :)

You are exactly right - this video was made in 2018 showing an older workflow (user survey showed majority of users still worked as a default of 2018 at the time of video release). Truthfully I have witnessed it done many ways by many companies, even ones at scales where you'd expect them to have a consistent approach I have found little consistency. As a premise, particularly in 2020 onwards you are right, I would try to adhere to the internal origin and project base point where possible. Where this falls apart can be when you have a both a site and national survey point which you want levels to have the capacity to report to, in which case the project base point and the survey point both have to migrate. Tricky business to try standardise working to ordnance information in Revit. Seems so variable on a per project basis. To reiterate though, I agree with your statement as a sensible approach from the first principles perspective. Glad you are enjoying the videos, hope you are getting some value from them. Niall

I can pin/unpin my PBP and also I can clip/unclip the Survey Point (Revit 2022). I'm confused because of the comment above that stated that they have removed the option to unclip the PBP. Can you be more specific? Also, is it a big problem to do it the way you did? Just saying since of the comment from M Hellstrom. So, keep the internal and the survey at 0.0.0 and move the PBP to whatever location you are relative to survey. Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the tutorial but there's some confusion here. The unclip option for the project base point is no longer available for 2020.2 upwards. I have tried to do as you did but I'm not getting the same results. Moving the project base point does not relocate the project and after inputting 69125 as the elevation, I'm getting negative values on my elevations. Please help, thanks.

Hi there, Apologies I only saw your comment today. I hope you got what you needed resolved. Yes, as of 2020.2 the option to unclip the base point has been removed. I personally think that this is a step backwards from the Revit Coordination controls but it is what it is. I now, as a standard, recommend that users do not migrate the project base point but that the internal origin point and the project base point remain grouped together in a known, designated area on the site. The survey point may move freely in order to inform the ordnance information for the site in real work terms. Hope this gives insights on how this process has changed since the 2020.2 patch release. 21:45 did you just move project base point away from the invinsible Internal Origin? this would screw up all future import export and file coordination between different consultans. i would prefer to move those grids instead

Hi Nicky. I agree completely and would advise against that now as a standard. This was version 2018 when the ordnance information had fewer options to contend with and the internal origin did not have a visibility identifier, so external coordination tended to be via Auto Shared Coordinates as standard. Completely agree that the Base Point and Internal Origin should remain constant these days unless there is a specific project requirement that expresses a variance between the two. I have been hoping to do an updated video to cover this but haven't found the time yet. Thanks for the constructive feedback and hopefully it helps others who stumble across the video. Niall

Hi Niall. Would you use a grid on an average sized residential model, or is it just for large scale and commercial models?

Hi Tom. If there is any sort of regularisation of the shape, structure etc for the domestic unit I would still recommend a grid. If nothing else having the grid framework improves the ease of setting out on the ground for the groundworks contractor. If the unit is part of a development of similar repeating units I would also advise utilising grids. If the unit is more freeform, naturally shaped for whatever reason you may opt to not include grids. They are a principle which improves accuracy fundamentally so it is a judgment call when it comes to irregular one-off domestic use cases. I genuinely tend to include them by default (but might opt to turn the visibility of grids off for print purposes should it detract from other data that does not lean heavily on the setting out) Hope this gives you some insight. You strongly advised not to work all disciplines in a single model. This is a advice that I have heard several times and it seems to me mandatory when working with different professions by discipline. But I don't understand why when the work will be done by a single designer. At the moment I am working on the interior design of an apartment, I am evaluating to continue to do the other disciplines on the same model. But I would really like to know your opinion, is it convenient in some situation to work on a single model? Or am I about to make a mistake that I will understand later. A thousand thanks!
