This is exactly the video I needed. Thank you! I just got an azalea on clearance for $1 because it had been damaged in a storm and I thought it would make a perfect bonsai but wasn’t sure how to go about it. This video helps a lot!

My dad picked out two beautiful azalea in the new shrubs he and my mom bought recently and I fell in love with it and so I took a cutting from it and am gonna train it to be a bonsai when it hopefully grows roots.

Thank you. I've seen many vid's on larger, more established Asalea's but never one that is just a average, run of the mill one strait from the nursery. This is great for a beginner like me. Can you give any pointers as to how to pick the best Azalea the nursery has? I did hear you say the yellow leaves are a sign of water log. Should I stay away from a plant like that or just figure the replanting will spring it back into a healthy green? Love your tutorials, thank you!

@15demersm 55-60 deg and darkness should be enough to keep a wisteria dormant. If it starts to grow anyway, move it to the window with the tropicals. Wisteria are semitropical vines, and coming out of dormancy early will not harm them. It happens here all the time when we get a January heat wave -- like we are having now.

Can we use fertilizer in a recent repoted plant/bonsai?? i read some book that say we must leave the plant recover from repoting then add fertilizer. Insted of fetilizer we must use some vitamines or biostimulats thx for nice video :)

I go to thrift stores, yard sales, joined a bonsai club in my area, and have even made my own specialty pots. I have an antique bowl, covered the bottom with masking tape, used a concrete drill bit.
@chasnsx14 жыл бұрын
@knoxxxxxx I should have explained, but I can't get everything into a 12 minute video. With this tree, I removed very few roots, used an oversize pot, and the tree is already flowering. If I do not fertilize it it will burn all its energy on flowers and run out of steam when it is time to produce leaves. You are right, though. If you root prune, do not fertilize until you see new growth on the tree.

Hi chas! I got another bonsai for Christmas that came dormant and was raised outside, all of my tropicals are in the window and are dormant from the cold drafty window(atleast it's useful for something), but what do I do with my wisteria that I just got, I live in Massachusetts and there is like a foot of snow on the ground so I can't bury the tree like I'm supposed to..what should I do? (I had to post in two)

I've been into bonsai for only about 6 months now and I had a question about soil mix. I read a Walter Pall article on soil/watering and feeding and it made a lot of sense. I was wondering if you had read the same thing and if it is practical in CA with the high temps we have sometimes? (There is a youtube video of him speaking about the same thing). He says overwatering is impossible with his method and it would really make it convenient if I were to go on vacation.

@liquidxskin1912 жыл бұрын
Ideally you would want to prune when the tree is in the dormant state. Although evergreens never really lose their needles and go completely dormant like deciduous trees winter and early spring before everything starts growing for the year is the best time to prune IMHO.
@nancyfahey75186 жыл бұрын
With azalea, trim right after flowering, then you'll have new flower buds the next year.

Hi, just started into the hobby of Bonsai to keep me occupied lol although its probably too late in the year to do anything to them. My question is what time of the year, like early Fall, too late to prune, and shape? I live in Pennsylvania in 5-7 hardiness zone, and am looking to do Juniper, Ellwood Cypress, and other evergreens. Just wondering if its too late in the year to work with them right now? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Always prune Azalea and rhododendron after flowering. And repot in the spring, pruning root ball if getting to crowded.

Can Axalea be kept indoors?
@perfectperson2145 жыл бұрын
It can be during the coldest months, place next to north facing window. Or south if in Australia. But best outside with the seasons. They don't have to go dormant, but it preferred for vitality.

Michael Bozeman I have grown several Albizia julibrissin (Persian silk tree) bonsai from seed. The trees are 6 years old now and the trunk is about the thickness of a man's thumb, they start to look like proper bonsai right now. It depends very much on the species and your care how long it will take to grow bonsai from scratch. Mimosoideae kinds grow very fast, so do fici, azaleas and other rhododendra. It doesn't take a century to get some nice bonsai, unless you want the ultimate as-old-as-time-looking Yew tree. Then you better buy or collect a mature tree or you need to reincarnate to see your results. :)

It doesn't seem right leaving the flowers on when you repot it's putting the tree under to much stress it's just used all its energy to flower your blasting the roots with a high powered hose then leaving the flowers on after its in the bonsai pot and the other thing I'm watching as writing this is your putting fertilizer on it read the back on the packet it tells you not to whilst in flower I'm supprised if this survived at all
@perfectperson2145 жыл бұрын
If the fert he used was like blood meal, low NPK with a slightly higher N, it's good. Soil acidifier mag. sulfate will help too, or Epsom salt.

That’s not a true azalea. It’s another type of rhododendron. Leaves are way too big for a good bonsai.
