This has to be my favorite synth. It's so versatile and easy to program.

Thank you very much! The R-DX really strikes a good balance between ease of use and "things you really need to create cool sounds".

Very interesting video Floyd! I'm still learning how to program sounds on my DX11. And since that one is also a 4 op FM synth, this video comes in handy :).

My additional tip: Do not emphasize the attack peak too much. On real distorted guitar sounds old fashioned, cardboard thick, inefficient speaker cones and compressors tend to do the same and delay effects smear out and blur the attack portion out even further, making these peaks less distinctive. Sometimes it is better to just depend more on your ears then on pure theory. And now rock on! :-)

Nice video. The reface dx is a 4 operators FM synthesizer, right? I think I could implement the preset in the Yamaha YM2612

Thanks for watching! Yes, it's a 4 OP synth. You you could upload your results to you KZbin channel ;-)

I would say the Keyboard Scaling Rate is the most frustrating aspect of FM sound design. I really wish on the next gen of this DX they include a global keyboard Scaling (like key tracking in analog) and a global filter mode. In particular with this synth, the breakpoint is fixed. I believe in other DX's, you could move that breakpoint. *end rant* Can you tell me what the idea would be behind choosing which operators to effect on the keyboard scaling rate and slopes? with Algo (signal flow) and carrier vs modulator in mind?
@mr_floydst3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! On the DX, (if I remember correctly), keyboard scaling affects the loudness of the operator you're working on. Turn it "downwards" (negative) and the volume decreases /increases when you play higher / lower notes. On an FM synth, this is best used to "dampen" patches which are too harsh in the upper register or "brighten" them when they are too dull in the lower register. Apply this to a modulator of choice (remember: a "louder" modulator increases the "brightness" of your sound). Best regards!

@@mr_floydst why did you part with it? The swipe controls instead of encoders seems like it would be annoying to fine tune.
@mr_floydst3 жыл бұрын
@@briannhinton I regretted that and bought (yet) another one ;-) Digitone is a great machine but a lesser synth than the DX.
@mr_floydst3 жыл бұрын
@@briannhinton And I originally swapped the DX for a Digitone 'cause I was searching for a good hardware sequencer. Digitone is quite good, but I found the MPC One is even better (at least for my needs, that is).
