Using reference to draw animals and creatures is the quickest way to mastering anatomy and making your creations believable and functional. However, do you struggle with inventing creatures from your mind if you don't have reference in front of you? Make sure to watch this tutorial because I break down the process for you!

This lesson was made with the intent of showing what you can do when you're first learning how to create creatures on the fly. Gathering reference is a skill in itself and unfortunately, stubbornness mixed with laziness is the cause of artists simply skipping the reference-gathering process. Yep I used to think anatomy study alone was enough and that reference was like "copying" so I didn't use it until relatively recently. Only after starting to use reference more heavily I started seeing a major improvement! Not to mention it helps a lot when you have creative block and don't know what to draw which I get quite often so reference kinda solves that by not having to think what to draw and just draw and analyse. When using reference it's not enough to just draw what you see you must also understand what you see and how the anatomy you study is translated to the reference. Not doing that might as well just be copying indeed.

Hi. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad for love). I've never studied Art and I perfectly understand your message... I started in late 2022. And, besides my feelings and my personal artistic ways (no technical experience or knowledge) I was always seeking for approval on whatever I did. Now... I don't, after learning through KZbin everything I've managed to learn (for which you have been, amongst a few others that I can count with the fingers of one hand) a LOT! Thank you for that! I understand what you mean about freeing your mind and start working out what actually happens from your brain to your hand. I have applied this from pencil to fountain pens and with brushes (both using ink or watercolor) and working out from scratch the shapes... AND it DOES work! It's amazing! YOU start off with a piece of... a Blob! And you end up with something really cool and very expressive! (I've even sold some Art work this way! - after only a year since I started). I keep learning and study and practice every day, but... YES! These exercises DO work! (at least for me). Note: I never use ballpoint pens anymore since many years (only fountain pens or dip pens/brushes for ink) so I can minimize as much as I can my plastic imprint (we - my family - also recycle as much as we can at home). A weird tactic i do is i sit in dim light and listen to music that fites the vibe of the creature i am imagining. If i don't have an idea, music helps me make one. But in the dim light im forced to work in shapes instead of detail because i cant see well. Usually helps me get the vibe im looking for

You have NO idea how you just stole my words, I use a similar tactic. I can't do things too well by the "traditional way" of drawing. The music has to guide my hand, it starts off with random strokes,dots placed anywhere or random lead smears. I'll sit there for awhile starting at the mess I've made then suddenly I'll feel a rush of inspiration, no thought put into it..just the music possessing my hand,focused only on the there and now. Eventually I'll see exactly it is I want to draw. I use a lot of very unorthodox methods to my madness. However,I always feel like my unique quality is my biggest downfall when compared to others. I can't draw something if go in with the mindset of "I must draw X". I fumble hard when I start off too focused. I've never known what my style of art was called, it's not "abstract" because it always ends up becoming something. However it's always that I gotta have a blank mind when I draw. It has to start off messy,and get more concise when the storm of emotion settles and sporadic hand movement settles.

My grandmother did this with me when I was little. Now I do it with my son. I also do collaborations with my son. He will draw something, and then I will shade and color it. Or I will draw something, and he will color it (shading is a little hard for him at this point) We have ended up with some fabulous art work.

"I ended up trying to draw it for someone else to approve of it" this hit me hard. I stopped drawing for 6 years bc I realized I was drawing for everyone else and there was someone constantly asking me to draw them something. I started to resent drawing. I'm trying rly hard to get back into drawing, but doing it for myself this time and it's so hard. I feel like I have a wall in my brain and whenever I sit to draw nothing comes. I spent so long obsessed with everything being perfect and I'm really enjoying these scribbling drawings and abstract things, to get me out of my fear of making mistakes. Anyways, I just had to say something, bc no one understands why I stopped drawing and it's been hard to explain it to family and friends and it was refreshing hearing someone say, what I was struggling with. A cool little trick one (maybe two) of my hippie art teachers in high school taught me is turn your paper upside down. After you've doodle for a bot, turn the paper upside down and see what you actually drew. It's hard to explain. Just try it. 😊

I remember when I was a kid, maybe... 10 or 12 years ago I was at an art show in Hammondsport, NY, I think, and there was an artist with sculptures and drawings that was a lot like this. I absolutely fell in love with the art, but couldn't remember the name of the artist, and as a kid I didn't really think to remember it, and the show didn't keep track. It would be amazing if you turned out to be him, but regardless it looks like you've blossomed and people are appreciating your art. I certainly do!!

I'm a french young artist, who LOVES drawing monsters and creatures, from horror, sci-fi types of things to more supernatural or fantasy creatures. It's quite an obsession since I was little, watching monster movies and playing video games with all kinds of different creatures in them. PS : From where I'm at in the video, I definitely see this as some sort of alien, jelly fish type of creature, acting as a spaceship for smaller alien organisms, or an amalgamation of millions of alien organisms, as in a floating hivemind. It kind of does remind of a Necromorph Brethren moon from the game Dead Space or a Zerg ship in Starcraft.

That sounds too convenient to me! Call me mr puritan. I understand the value and need of references on all stages of the creative process! I understand it even more in a learning/investigation stage. But saying everything is a reference is unfair to anyone that spent half their life becoming a master of drawing and painting from imagination. And quite a few do with exceptional results. I dont mean to be rude, but one takes a few years of drawing lessons to manage, the other takes dozens and dozens of thousands of hours :D How its done matters and should be valued.

​@neliiinhu That wasn't the point. The point is, in the beginning of the video references are spoken about in a direct manner. Using references directly. Imagination in this video refers to non-direct references. The person who you replied to is implying that, thats where the limitations come in. Thinking or believing theres only a singular source of reference. The level of skill here is briefly irrelevant. Leave skill out for a moment. We'll circle back. The commenter meant that all artists use direct references and at some point all or most of those references remain in your head as a mental library of references to pull from, so when drawing from imagination, the mind is still pulling from reference because the mind doesn't know how to imagine something that doesn't exist. It doesnt know how to relate to an experience that doesnt exist yet. When humans first discovered fire, we didnt know everything about it. It was a learning experience and through that we gave a it a name but in no way did we know about it through pure imagination prior it's discovery. Prior its existance. How could we. So in terms of drawing from imagination, we are in fact still pulling from reference. It's just the reference is coming from a different source. Our mind utilizes direct sources from muscle memory. The memory of experience. Mental notes. All those studies and hours of practice you mention becomes muscle memory. Even if you don't remember where you got a certain idea from, reference was still pulled from a direct source somewhere that already existed. You simply forgot from where. You just used it for your art. That's all. Don't take this as an argument. This is something that a lot of artists get wrong, even professionals. I believe as artist, it's where our artistic ego comes from. We want to be the best in some way. So there's a ton of pride in thinking we create from pure imagination, but that simply doesn't exist, only the idea of thinking that it does. Talent is one thing but it's still part of money see monkey do. It's just talent has a better grasp out the gate than the average. It was still learned behavior. When we take that talent and sharpen it, it becomes something more. It becomes skill. Skill beats talent because skill is the evolution of talent. It's why training and practice is a thing. All the great artists out there that had an interest or talent took that and trained, practiced, and used direct reference to the point they ended up with a mastered understanding of reference they're pulling from. So they no longer have to rely on a direct form. They can rely on all the mental notes of reference they spent so much time studying.

Where we define the line between reference and imagination. I dont agree with you at all, imagination is so dense and so much more than just mental images, that from an human perspective calling it a "reference" is not only dishonest, but opens the door for the devaluing of some really dedicated people's work, and the validation of stuff like AI "art" .

I love the BIC ballpoints. I've not seen that exact same pen here where I live, but others. They don't splatter or smudge ink everywhere. No lumps suddenly flopping out on your paper. Cheap and reliable.

I used to paint all the time, mostly back in highschool but for a while after highschool too. I took a lot of inspiration from Salvador Dali's work, and usually made these weird, surreal landscapes with "beings" I guess you'd call them. creating weird stuff from my own mind/emotions was my favorite and always helped me chill out....Well, recently my dad passed away so I've been dealing with some shit lately, and I randomly found one of my old canvases from 08 that I drew on but never painted. So, Last night I started painting it, and it felt exactly like I remembered, back in the day. Pretty crazy I started it in 2008 and am finishing it, all these years later. I think I'm going to go back to painting more frequently. I didn't realize how much I missed it until I started doin it again.

I feel like this creature would be a filter feeder/cleaner, kinda like those small animals in the sea or aquariums that clean rocks or the water, but it would be in the air instead, it would use its claws to attach to rocks and clean them with a mouth on the under part, or maybe float around cycling air through its body, and the top part would actually open to release the cleaned air. I'm thinking its about a hand's size? Also, I kept thinking all those small round shapes were eyes LOL. I just found your channel, but I already feel like I've been watching you for ages, I'm definitely subbing and probably going to binge some of your stuff

I think the round creature could be called a ''balloonger'' or ''pumpalloon''. The round shapes could be filled with light gases that makes it able to float like a helium balloon. It goes up and down by releasing small amounts of air from the air pockets. I think it could eat small bugs and insects that it catches in the air with its tentacles. It propels itself forward with the small amount of air that is released. When it has to walk on the ground it spits out all of the air from its body and becomes smaller. While on the ground it rolls around like a ball.

Some time ago I used to start sketches/paintings in a basic form through spontaneous lines and searching for living volumes. Now I proudly state that I disciplined myself by starting a form (even an organic one) through geometric primitives. Is it worth it? I do not know. Is it better than starting a site with an organic line? I do not know. What I do know is exercise that entertains me. I also alternate initial sketches. Sometimes I start an object right through a live line. These are the cases where I look for an interesting silhouette. In these cases, strict and categorical geometry is a prison for exploring new and interesting forms. So, one way or another, it's all fun. It depends on what the person's pursuits are and what that person is striving for. But interestingly, I also loved dinosaurs and insects as a kid. I didn't like dragons, but specifically dinosaurs. So great video. I always like to watch.

When you talked about dragonfruit, I couldn't help to think of what this creature might taste like... (yes, I watched Dungeon Meshi 😂) I think it is very soft when you bite into it, but the skin doesn't break easily; you either need to break it with your incisors or get a knife. It might have a citrussy taste, but in a soapy way? Has anyone ever tried a bit of orange or lemon peel? As soon as the skin is opened, the "flesh" might be gooey, like the broth in aspic. And taste more of lemon than the skin, but also has a salty aftertaste. Rather an "aquired taste". Considering it's a creature rather than fruit, the toothy bits on the bottom might be used as some sort of anchors? The creature lodges itself into surfaces of plants/trees/other creatures. The mouth might be on the bottom of it, like a starfish. It breathes easily through the gill-like slits on the top. They might be like leeches and form a short-term symbiosis with the other creature, sucking out blood and toxins to feed on (which might cause it to taste citrussy - the more it has ingested, the stronger the taste) It dislodges from the host after a few days, floating off more colourful and maybe even rounder/inflated. The host might be left with small stab wounds, which could either be disinfected by some secretion of the floaty creature - but it also could be left to deal with those itself...

I would call the creature “Earthquake Scavenger.” The creature appears to have many underdeveloped eyes as occurred in the Cambrian era on earth.Because this creature evolved to focus its energy on controlling it's small individual sacs of methane to float so It can feed on the mold found on the cliffs of it's planet , entering a feeding frenzy as tectonic plates move revealing mold colonies on the surface.

This is kinda fun ive got some fuzzy spider creatures i am drawing digital cause i get more variety for pens but i haven't un done anything but i did erase a line that looked weird because it didn't combine with fuzziness and outlined it but other than that i haven't erased anything abd once i have a pen i might pull out a sketch book and give it a shot that way. so I finished it and used a randomly generated color palette so its very colorful and it has 14 eyes and pointy crab like legs

My rules: 1. Make sure you know if you're going to color it. 2. Find an object, any object. 3. Choose a theme, cute, serious, funny, horror, romantic, lustful. 4. Visualize yourself standing with it, unless it's something titanic like a true giant or similar. With these rules I made something on the spot. Grizbit A micro bear species, Grizbits are a little bigger than your common wild rabbit. They are a pack animal due to their smaller size and their packs consist of roughly 5-20ish pack members. They have variety in their coat colors unlike other bear species and can find mixed bear pelts being quite common, some reds, blacks, creams and even calico. You can find their dens dug out under large trees, boulders, hollows, nooks and other not so seen areas. They live in self dug tunnel like dens. Abandoned dens give light that they have a main chamber, that being the largest of rooms in all cases that contains beddings and food remains. And up to three smaller rooms where the same beddings and food remains have been found. Grizbits are known by a few names. Two of them being Bearmuts and land Piranhas. For games, the Grizbit. 35 HP 1 MP 7 ATK 5 DEF 1 CON 4 STA 2 INT 2 WIS 1 CHA I came up with this idea and all of this and typed it out by 21:12. Just don't kid yourself, you're creative. Everyone can do everything that everyone else can (Unless for obvious reasons).

24:16 It looks like it would live in hard soils and live off of the nutrients in the soil. Looks like it would live like a rock, but the bulbs are filled with salt water. It's waste would be infertile soil, so these little guys are bad for the ecosystem. They breed by spores and only breed out once a decade. They use the claws on bottom to break ground and dig to varying depths, those being anywhere from 1 meters to 4 meters. They then sit in their chosen spot and begin to consume all nutrients in the surrounding soil, affecting a maximum area 2 meters in diameter, and depending on depth, up to 6 meters as they can and will consume all nutrients above them. They do not like ammonia. It is acid to their skin, they will dissolve in half an hour if left exposed.

i used to be very creative with my art, i used to enjoy it. Now i feel stuck and empty, i cant get nothing out on paper, while my head is full of new things, why? Because i over complicate stuff from the start and also lack technical abilities due to stressing too much about being "perfect" so im unable to learn it and get new set of skills. My parents infected me with being the perfect child, although i was just a normal kid that wanted to feel loved. i was bad at subjects at school except creative stuff or interesting experiments so i tried my very best at art.Teachers yelled at me because i was drawing in my notebooks, my parents tried to explain i cant draw in school notebooks, i constantly was put, up front of the class as a prime example of what not to do because i was almost failing classes due to F's for drawing in notebooks as if they were meant to stay almost "perfect", intact on sides, clean and fresh. That's one of may reasons why i hate school system, the lack of self thinking, prohibition to be creative, putting down different people because they don't fit into thigh social boxes with their brains, rewarding bullying or pretending it dosen't exist. I can no longer enjoy all of this, this stress and all of this is pointless, i just want to let this all go and free myself from my shackles put on me by life, i want a free mind without the unnecessary stress of tommorows and yesterdays, if i would be able to create a new world i would get rid of all the gold and riches because their light is so blinding we cant see past it and just waste our lifes away in this never ending agony, chasing the light not many will reach. We can also call the "perfection " this blinding light, but in this case the perfectionism is a dark bottomless pit taking away our pride, joy and happiness because nothing ever is good enough for our own approval. I cant be happy of any work i do since its always" no, this is not right", "ugh, this is wrong should be that", " why im so bad at this" ," its not good enough, i must try harder, i must push myself further" and so i did, i pushed myself off of a cliff, now im barley holding on to a sticking root trying to get back where i was. You could call it a Cliff hanger hahaha. if you are as stuck and empty, deprived of joy as me remember, there is always a choice. i stumbled here by accident and will go back filled with new hope and a dream for better future and will try once more to free my mind and a part of my soul out my cage, that i made in my brain so i can be considered as a part of society, since my thinking is very different than most peoples i had to close off a certain part which was responsible for my own joy and so in the process of it i lost all my character and became what society deems normal. Happy, chatty, have nothing interesting nor inteligent to say,only talk about what others did wrong but never right (although i do not do this since i myself am not always good at something and see it as being a lowlife to talk only about mistakes that others made never acknowledging my own), follows the system and the creators of it, always is ready to oblige, never causes troubles, is a shoulder to cry on and basically carries the weighty of a world on its shoulders. I highly doubt anyone has read that but if you did thank you, i just felt safe in this space so i decided to share some of my thoughts. i see the person in the videa as a true artis, there is no "oh, if you drew this it will always help you and will basically do the hard work for you", he is honest and seems free in a sense, which im kinda jealous of since for the past 9 years i have not reached that place nor have i made too much progress. i cant draw free in my sketch books b'coz i need them to contain only my "perfect "works, which is sad and that is my demon im fighting, the "perfectionism" the poison put into me since childhood. if you are a parent and you read that, please dont put your imperfections onto your child to make them "perfect" for you. The perfection you seek will never be in them as they are a separate being, you need to seek it within yourself. Although its not what you expect to find, its not a skill its a mere realization within you that you were always "perfect" in your "imperfections" and that you always are good enough, so leave yourself a room to grow because even the smallest plants can have giant roots and there fore will need space so the rest can grow large and strong.

This is the kind of tutorial I've been looking for for ages! This is the way I draw, I stary with shapes, usually spheres - eyes, and they morph into something. Sometime I'm lucky and it looks great and so.etimes it looks shit 😂. Either way i love my process. Subbed to your channel.

Playing an instrument is the same way, you can spend your life watching you tube videos on how to play but if you never actually put time on the instrument you won't gain the ability to do what you watched these people do. Soon you'll know what notes are in a scale and what is not, eventually you can put notes in a scale that "don't belong" but it will sound good and interesting.

I appreciate the lesson! I am someone who relies almost too heavily on references because I get in my head about being scared to make something that doesn’t look good, but I also get stuck in a spot where if I can’t find the perfect references then I get scared to create. I am excited to use the practices in this lesson to help me get out of my head and get better at brainstorming new ideas without feeling trapped by a reference image. I do tend to try more cute and cuddly types of creatures, more on the mammalian and avian side of things. Do you think these techniques will still work even though I am not drawing things like this that don’t have eyes and a distinct head?

It kind of looks like a sentient pumpkin with pustule bulbs or something on it, like a living defense mechanism... I also just binged the entire Alien movie series, so my brain has acid blood on the mind ✨I have no idea what I'd call it, but yeah my brain gives off sentient, living plant-type organism, they do not breed, they grow, maybe breaking off parts of themselves to form into smaller versions, an entire species of perfect copies of each other.

Think about the subject matter you want to design first. Categorize the creature, character etc and search for photos of that subject matter.
