You can easily use Layer Styles to add a Gradient Overlay, an Inner Glow, and an Outer Glow to simulate light. You can also use multiple layers with Blend Modes to get funky effects.

IceFlow did a great job if generally telling you what this does, it's the "dpi" of a document, or "dots per inch" dots being the number of little ink dots are put onto the image when printed, like he said, 300 would be a lot more dots per inch than 72, but with web it doesn't matter, so the default for that, is 72. :)

Howard, I know you probably already know this, but when clicking the saved flame brush onto a new layer, from my experiences, it always works great to fiddle with the Levels slightly, works really well with white flames.

Ice, you make a common error: 8000*8000 at 300dpi is exactly the same size as 8000*8000 at 72dpi. The reason for this is that you only change the size of pixels, not the amount. DPI only changes filesize if the size is defined by a real-world-size (inches, centimeters). There is a good tutorial about it on tutsplus, I think it's called 'the dpi lie' or something like this.

72 is typically for web, 300 is great for print. However, if you increase a 72dpi image to 300, there's a good chance you'll see a lot of pixelation, if it's not a vector design.

If you use the crop tool and set the DPI there, you will change the size it will be printed out at. So a 72dpi image set to 300dpi will just be printed at different sizes because the Dots Per Inch (to print on paper) is different. It won't be pixelated, but small. If you use the image re-sizer and resize an image from 72dpi to 300dpi you will make the image large enough to be printed out at the same size with the different Dots Per Inch required to print it. It will be very pixelated.

Great techniques! Easy to understand. I learned how to extract a black background on a complex image (flame) in a way I had not known before and it's fantastic. Thank You. I've been looking for a tutorial on how to make a torn paper brush that just makes the tear on images not an image of torn paper. Would love to learn that from you as the few I've seen were not quite what I was looking for.
