I have my Saturn sitting on a wall mounted shelf a couple feet above my desk, so it's always a big pain to take the cover on and off. I'll definitely be doing this, thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm super impressed with how clean everything turned out too.

I thought I was gonna have to spend another $6-900 to get a printer with doors. This idea just saved me 99% of that. You sir are a legend.

Really brilliant construction method, well thought out engineering for the material requirements. Putting the hinges on after after only one cut is awesome, use them of painting tape to preserve the plexiglass aesthetics is so smart, this is someone who understands the material, Congrats and great video.

I have my printer sitting under a shelf and its just an inch or so of being able to get the cover off. This is gonna be a game changer. Thanks for the great idea and the walk through on how to do it.

I really wish they would design the printers with this in mind in the first place. Taking the whole top off is always a pain, even if you have all the space you need for it.

Not to mention all the fingerprints... I really wish I had door handles for that reason alone.

I just added a small home depot draw handle to the top of mine to pull it straight up, but am going to investigate this door installation technique.

Great vid; very well thought out process for doing this and minimising risks (i.e mounting the hinges before fully cutting the doors).

Nice video. Only other thing i would add would be a bracket on the inside under the roof of the case to hold 2 small magnets and then glue 2 on the top corner of the door to make sure that it is properly held close. Good job though, still waiting for my own printer so ill see if i will make this depending on were i end up putting it.

Absolutely awesome idea! How the hell do you keep your Dremel so steady! When I use mine, especially the saw bit, it jumps all over the place. I can't make it cut a straight line to save my life 🤬. Also, how about using pegs as door stops (like on my computer wardrobe) at the top to keep the doors from closing too far inward?
@totallyuninterestingguy
@totallyuninterestingguy 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean!! I always feel like the cutting wheel snags and it's off to the races across whatever surface you're working on. I guess slow and steady for this, especially since the hot cut plastic tends to splatter.
@MarkSavides
@MarkSavides Жыл бұрын
use a large metal plastic cutting blade. Also let he tool do the work. do not force it and you will be able to make a straight line.

Nice. But what if you have more printers next to each other? With these doors you will gain top space but lose side space. Would it be possible to make one single door like the one on the new Jupiter?
@PropsN3D
@PropsN3D 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support! Yes it would be possible to make 1 door, but if I would do this I would also make 1 door in the L-shape. Meaning the hinges would also be at the side and you would need some space next to the printer. Otherwise 1 door at the front would give you limited space. Cheers DB

The way i would get around thid would propably be having the hinges on top of the case and make some sort of lach to hold the door open.....if that makes sence
@Iameddie2go
@Iameddie2go 2 жыл бұрын
@@nixz3062 if you're as thick fingered as me, I'd be afraid of losing grip on the door and it slamming back down, at a minimum splashing resin out of the vat; worst case scenario shattering the door. Especially if a number of things are going wrong just as I opened it up. Been there, done that, cussed up a storm
@mackincaid9299
@mackincaid9299 Жыл бұрын
@@Iameddie2go You could also design it so it opens downward, with gravity holding the door out of the way. I used to do it that way when converting 10 gal aquariums into vertical gecko terrariums. Worked great.
@robb233
@robb233 Жыл бұрын
@@mackincaid9299 Thought about that, but you have to be more careful of resin drops as you pull stuff out.

Great video! I think I'm going to give this a try as well on the Saturn 2. I'm just a little worried about splitting the plexiglass cover with rivets though. What steps did you take to make sure the rivets wouldn't bust the plexi? Seems like I might want to test a couple on a similar piece of material first :D
@mackincaid9299
@mackincaid9299 Жыл бұрын
I was worried about that too! Every time I try to drill acrylic at all I end up cracking something. I left another comment on this video about using glue-on acrylic hinges if you want to take a look at that as an alternative.
@JT-rl4ki

I'm sure you already made the mod but getting longer rivets and place washers on the inside will work. I just found this and will do it on my saturn 2!

This is nice, but rough. Needs a better way to cut, you didn't measure center, tape was off center a bit, you didn't add any seal or oring type silicon or rubber gasket to seal when closed from the odor/fumes etc.

There's always that one that has to complain about something. 😑 try mute with closed captioning problem solved, or click back and choose another video, or better yet, make your own KZbin video and get yelled at by anonymous randos in your comments. The dude posted a good simple idea to a badly designed product component and you're bent out of shape about music. Get a grip.
