In this video I will show you simple way to create hand to hand/punching combat system in Unreal Engine. We are gonna use similiar method to what we used before, which means animation based attacks. The reason for this is that animation based attacks deliver much more visceral feeling of attacks.

When i try to put the interfaces in blueprints it says this function was not marked as blueprint callable

This one worked perfectly, my right click punching is dealing 10 damage! Let's go! The one I struggled with was the combat system video sword dealing 14 damage. It has to be related to metahuman that I'm using. Animnotify didnt show in ABP_Quinn(which is anim mesh for my mesh) so I made it in m_med_nrw_animbp(it's specific for metahumans) and copied it, which made punches work, it will probably work for weapons if I fix the child weapon. Metahumans are weird..

Yeah you need to make sure that the anim notifies are for the correct skeleton that you are using. Since Animnotifies are bound to a skeleton just like animBP.

How does the enemy react to our punches? Do we need anything? Does enemy actor has to play reaction anim?

Hi, yes in order for the enemy to react to your hit you need to set it up so it plays animation on damage taken. I have a video on doing exactly that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6qmqpWIj7V8aa8

Thanks for the vid! However, I don't know how to add tags to actors, so I can't get it to properly remove health from my character. How can I add a tag to my character?

To add a tag to an actor simply open the blueprint. Make sure that in the component you have the top most selected(self). Then in the details you can simply search for "tag" and then click on + and add the tag.

Got it! The attack start and finish functions weren't running because I was casting to the player character instead of the enemy character I was using

Hi, most of animations I use are from Unreal Engine Marketplace. This punching animation specifically is from the pack called "Close Combat Animset".

I see, you might want to try in your enemy actor to plug a Print String node to event any damage and see if it prints out any damage done. You also might have not set any value to the damage of your punches which would make it not register. The default actors don't "react" to damage it's just something I've set up for the video. But I will see about making a video on how to do a quick dummy actor set up for testing purposes.

thanks for the tuturial, but when the player is walking and punches it stops the walking animation?

Hi, that is because you are playing the animation on the "full body". If you want to be able to basically attack/punch while walking then you need to make the animation play only on upper part of your body. Here is a video where I go over how to do that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXOlc313hbeipJo

Hi, I haven't tested this exact system in UE4 but it's based on my other weapon system and I used that in UE4 without issues.
