How to Create Natural-Feeling MIDI Tempo Maps
In this video, Authentic Soundware's Jared Hunter demonstrates how to use time base settings and a freely performed sketch to create more natural tempo maps for your musical productions. The demonstration uses Avid's Pro Tools, but the process can be adapted to other DAWs, such as Cubase.

This is excellent information, and validates things I have done similarly. Thanks for sharing your methods!

This is really cool! This can be done in Logic as well, but with some extra steps. After playing in the midi on the guide tempo track, bounce in place that track to audio (I suggest simplifying the part so transient detection works better). Then open beat mapping in the global tracks, click on beat mapping to open the menu and select 'Protect Midi'. Then use the audio version of your guide track to beat map to the transients (you may have to select 'Analyze Transients' from the beat mapping menu).

If you happen to have Melodyne, it can automatically detect tempo and tempo changes in your audio, then export the tempo map as a MIDI file which you can import in your DAW. It’s so much faster and easier to do than fiddling with the tempo track in your DAW. Additionally, while other tempo detection tools rely on transients in the audio, Melodyne looks at changes in the melodic and harmonic content, so it even works when there are no transient elements in the music. It’s a very advanced feature that not many people know about. 🙂

That's a great tip for when you're working with audio and have a reference you want to use.

Great tips. I'm pretty sure there is an equivalent process in Studio One. Beat mapping or something - I'll check it out tomorrow. But this should really help in developing more realism. Thanks!
