When shooting on location, especially indoors, it helps to understand off-camera flash so that you can create the right light for the look you want, despite the ambient lighting conditions. Pye will show you a technique you can use to create natural light portraits when natural light is no longer available.

Good video. But I would like to know what the set-up would have been if the walls, especially the one oppositie the window, were dark. THose white walls are providing on awful lot of fill light which is probably just as important in these shots as the key.

This was very informative for me... I have a small garage studio and I want to try setting up a daylight style of lighting. What I have taken away from this is that use lots of bounce into white walls and through reflectors... Thanks for another great video Adorama!

Would love to see how to get a natural light infect indoors when not everything is white. I feel having all white is great but not realistic. If I shoot a wedding venue indoor reception, I’m at the mercy of the venue. Some tips on that would be great!

Hi! Really inspiring video! Thank you for making it. I have a question. If the flashes are on manual and fire always at the same power, but the distance between your subjects and the bounce wall is different how do you manage the situation? There was a scene when the kids were sparring and you were looking around searching for the subject. Do you have to adjust the power or the flashes of your subject get closer to or further from the wall? Thx

Nice shots but feel the first set were all very messy as you have elements of people in the background but not quite out of focus enough to be able to ignore them

Damn!! Truly awesome!! Very clean white images. Nicely balanced. After seeing the placement of the lights and V-Flats, it made sense. I would gave thought, "Why not have light behind camera and shoot forward?" But, you would gave not addressed the light coming in from window. Thanks SO much for your content...always!! Last thing, I was at a photoshoot 2 weekends ago and a photogra0her had a Profoto B10 and beauty dish. Wow!! I got to see the POWER and refresh speed of that light. Powerful modeling light. So amazing.

These shots are beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Seems like a similar technique could also be used for video, to get a natural light vibe, as opposed to a more direct source with a key light pointed at the subject.

Would be interesting to know how much of the exposure comes from ambient light (if any at all). Seems a pretty bright room even with that wall blocking the light.
@BrianMorrisPhoto
@BrianMorrisPhoto 2 жыл бұрын
that depends on shutter speed and iso sensitivity plus how much output the lights are tossing. In the video (3:07mark) you can clearly see that outside light (Blueishtint) is hitting 2 - 3 people in the back ground.

Hi - Thanks for sharing this. I'm wondering that you are getting crisp sharp pictures with SS 1/200 s - does this relates to the use of flash with short flash duration ? I assume w/o flash you will have lots of motion blur - correct ???
@shifteleven
@shifteleven 4 жыл бұрын
So my guess is that indoors with that wall blocking a lot of light, 1/200s iso 400 f4.5 is enough to pretty much kill the light in the room. So yeah, then the short flash duration is what's freezing the action as you noted. And without, I'm willing to bet that there would be some motion blur in some of those photos where the students aren't paused in their stance - also as you noted :)
@DarkWaterCreatives
@DarkWaterCreatives 4 жыл бұрын
As long as he is lighting with flash only it does not matter what the SS is as the flash duration will be something like 1/5000 of a sec, therefore, freezing the motion. Hope that makes sense.
@slrlounge
@slrlounge 4 жыл бұрын
Flash is helping to freeze as well. Hence you're not seeing as much motion blur as you would with an action shot at 1/200th natural light.

You can see they turned off the houselights so the light mostly flash, maybe some ambient from the sun but apparently not enough, at those settings, to blur action. He has a lot of firepower going on that wall.

Would be cool to have such cool light in BJJ Gyms but most of you probably know the reality, it's very hard to do bjj photography that's not staged cause most gyms have shit light. So we just go for high iso and black and white lol
