When you said that the origami was starting to get "too complex", you hit an important point. This brings back the question of "What makes a good design?" A good design is when the product looks great. This is fundamental. In representative origami, a design looks great when the most important characteristics of the object (the focal point) it tries to represent supports the look of each other, besides, well, the model looks like the object it tries to represent. For example: when you see a flying falcon trying to catch a prey, what did you remember? The open wide wings, open talons, open tail, head with beak, and the body. Four important focal points are: wings, talons, tail, and head. Therefore, it's important if you design an origami falcon, make the wings, talons, head, and tail support each other in looks. Complexity is one of the most important factor in how a section of the model looks. It's your decision to make a particular part looks complex and detailed or not. For example, you can choose to represent a frog leg with complete toes (like Lang's or Kamiya's Tree Frog) or you can just represent it with just a flat region (like Roman Diaz's Bullfrog's hindleg or LaFosse's Frog). However, keep in mind that while you can make a part as complex or as simplistic as you want, the other focal points has to make up for the complexity of that part. One particularly interesting characteristic of origami is that the complexity of the entire model depends on the most complex section of the model. If we look back to the last time Tadashi held a design competition, a controversy emerged when a simple model gets to be one of the finalists. One particularly disappointed contestant, who submits an eagle design, argues that his design should be one of the finalists instead of the simple design. I looked at the model, and saw some flaws to his/her design: while the wings looks complex, the talons, tails, and head (which are the main focal points) does not live up to the complex wings, which makes the model looks off and jarring; yet the simple design (a sea monster IIRC) does not have any complexities, yet each part (head, tail, and the two flippers) does not try to "kill" each other, and exists in harmony. The eagle is a perfect case of a part being "too complex", just like what Tadashi explained in the video when he tried to make a complex body, but the head/face does not support it. "But Kamiya designed a Lyrebird which has a complex Miura-ori based tail, yet the feet just look stubby!" Well, you are right, but the important difference here is Kamiya tried to represent a Lyrebird, which is a grounded bird. In a grounded bird, the toes are concealed by the surrounding ground anyway, so it's not really a focal point (The focal point is the amazing tail and the two long plumes, while the rest of the body is only needed to fill in the space so it's recognisable as a grounded bird). In a flying bird, especially hunting falcons, the talon is a focal point. "But Lang and Roman Diaz designed a dancing crane, which is grounded, yet they decided to put toes!" Well, the reason they made toes is because one of the legs is raised (as in a dancing crane), so the toes are important, and the rest of the body is complex. If you make a more simplistic body (like Kade Chan's Immortal Crane), you don't need to make the complete toes, just the usual stubby feet will do perfectly. In conclusion, while complexity has its share in how a model look, it does not always make a design look great. You have to think as a whole, "does this design benefit from a complex section, or a more simplistic looking alternative will do just fine?" Keep this in mind when you try to design a model.

It's very fascinating seeing another origami designer's way of designing. Broad strokes, we are attacking the problem the same way but our particular style and the tools we use are unique. We both do a proportional analysis of the subject, counting up all the features we want to represent, decide if the paper will be best in diamond or book position, usually begin by designing an area of the model with the most concentrated amount of details, then design the lesser detailed portions while figuring out how they fit together, collapse the model and then make adjustments based on how closely the collapsed base resembles the subject we're modeling. I draw my theoretical designs in Microsoft Paint and use a lot of circle and river representations. Not only was it fun for me to see how you designed Charizard but I learned about why I'm seeing a lot of these particular 22.5 degree angles in modern origami. Thinning down claws and such with 22.5 angles already made a lot of sense to me but, for instance, the 22.5 angle you used for the neck, I finally understand what's going on there and why origami designers make choices like that. Thanks for making this video Tadashi. I can't wait to see more.

Hi Tadashi Mori, what an awesome tutorial you upload here :D Surprisingly, our method is very very similar. For those of you who wanted to design a more simpler origami, what you need to do is to fold certain simple base (Peliminary, frog, fish, etc) and think of something that you could design of it. For example : (Waterbomb base) Oh! I got 4 points here, maybe I can make a table. And in this scenario, you just need to transform the waterbomb shape into a table (well, eventhough you still need practice to do this, but hey it's much more easier) After you're getting used to it, you can refer again to this tutorial, where you see, all of the structure in the CP is relate back to simpler base. Another thing for you who want to be designer, please starts with folding from diagrams and think of how the way it fold (why this step must be like this? Ooh it's for (blablabla)), this will really really help you on understanding the mechanic of paper and increase your origami design library. Tadashi Mori is similar to Satoshi Kamiya, which they use library method to design origami, and then use graft to adjust the rest of the body. Even though Satoshi also do another technique, but it's still worth it to learn this method! Good job Tadashi, you're the first to post on how to design origami on KZbin xD

Origami is a labor of love. It took me about a year and a half to go from flapping crane to advanced level. Even today I sometimes need to fold a model 3 or 4 times to make it perfect and that's with an excellent diagram. I have a "reject box" that I'll fill indefinitely. It is testament to perseverance.

WOW...!!! Really very good video man! Thank you very much, explanation was very good, all was very good. I cant wait the second part. Yes, sometimes using boxpleating is a problem cause tickness of paper and lose of efficiency. Many origamists, like you, finally tend to use a frog base/bird base pattern to evade these things, generally in complex models is better to use, when possible, frog/bird base patterns. You can see it John Montroll's designs, or many Kasahara designs too for complex models. Boxpleating is "trending topic" but is not the best way to design models.
@tadashimori
@tadashimori 9 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Box pleating is the easiest way to create origami, so it's kinda being over-used. But in some cases, like in human figures, it's the absolute best way to create the origami.

My vision is for the head to include the things on the side of his head, the prongs that extend from the end of his mask, maybe the eyes, and use the rest of the paper I would use for the cape (a la Ignacio Smith's Darth Vader) with perhaps a set of claws protruding from one of the folds of his cape if possible. What are your recommendations?
