The plastic causes the clay to dome while being cut. It create a nice, easy bevel on the piece.

I don't understand the mica shift. There's no mica? Its a lovely pattern though. I keep hearing the term but i don't get it.

I got it from the craft store, but you can get chalk pastels online as well. ebay's a good place to start.
