so, I got my LLC, got my domain, went on Fiverr got a few logos made, in the middle of creating my website, signed up with some wholesale manufacturer sites.(signed up for Taobao but I don't know how to translate the page to English whoops )....anyway Im am on track with my ecommerce business and I wanted to say thank you for all this content. it has given the confidence to continue as scary as this is.

edwidge, that's awesome props to you for taking action. as for translating the page if you use google chrome it will typically autoprompt you to translate. also if you do a google search for taobao on the search results there should be a little blue icon or hyperlink that says "translate this page" click that and it will be in english.

+The Online Empire Academy thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words. yeah private labeling isn't as inimidating as it may seem. one tip i give people who are new and scared to order a lot of inventory. you can still do kind of a version of private labeling. most companies wont private label small orders but you can order small orders and just get custom packaging made. your actual product wont necessarily have a brand on it but the packaging will. if it sells once your ready to order more you can actually do traditional private labeling putting your brand on the product.

Hey John, typically a file is designed on the computer and made up of pixels. When it is converted to a vector file all those pixels become a solid shape allowing it to be resized without losing detail as a result in the changing resolution. Adobe Illustrator is a very common program used to design files as Vector (instead of converting an existing .jpg or .bmp which can result in lost detail).
@rulesforrebels7 жыл бұрын
hey travis, thanks for the explaination. im not a designer or anything so i know enough to get by in getting the files i need and what have you but never really knew why a vector file is superior so thats good to know. thank you. are you a graphic designer?

I already completed those 6 steps, the road block I have encountered would be steps 7 & 8.. Since my product is a "Private Label" it is not being sold on Amazon yet.. So Amazon tells me I need to: 1) Register the Brand 2) Apply to Sell on the item category 3) for selling on FBA: I need to have barcodes. 3.1) Getting 1000 barcodes will cost me $2,250 for 1000 barcodes. 3.2) The cheapest option is 10 barcodes for $250 but since I sell baby shoes in different colors, sizes and styles. Ten barcodes isn't enought cus each size/color/style counts as a barcode. So I would need the next option which is 1000 barcodes for $2,250. with a $150 yearly renewal fee. 3.3) My profits aren't high enough for me to spend $2,250 , it will take me a bunch of sales just to "brake even." 3.4) FBA fees are crazy expensive for the Baby Category at 15% plus other fees like picking & packing etc etc 3.5) FBA have better SEO (Search Engine Optimization, meaning that in my observation, those listing are always at top..)

Wow, barcodes are quite expensive in the US. I just looked at it and found alot of websites which "sell" barcodes (European / EAN). Starting at ~ $90 for 250 codes ~ $120 for 500 codes and up to 10,000 codes for $1,300.

@mohammedasish13658 жыл бұрын
Hello . I have watched some of your videos and found it quite informative. I am interested to start my new online business however, I am still confused where to get started from. 1) Do have to have a website to start it off? 2) Do I have to personally contact the supplier for private labelling? 3) Do I have to buy stock before selling it on Ebay or Amazon? How Can I contact you as I have more questions and need some guidance to get this started. Thanks
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
1. you dont need a website if your selling on ebay or amazon as that's your selling platform however i dont like building businesses that rely entirely on third parties like ebay or amazon so i would highly suggest starting your own stie. im a big fan of shopify but you can do bigcommerce, bigcartel, wordpress with woocommerce, etc. 2. yes you need to personally contact the supplier, who else would contact htem for you? i would suggest starting off just buying a few odds and ends products on dhgate or ali express, get your feet wet before trying to private label. private labeling typically requires a large moq and id suggest getting some experience before you go buying thousands of pieces of inventory. 3. i personally like buying stock, i find i have more control over my business and also make better margins but there is a concept which exists called dropshipping which basically means you dont have any inventory, you get an order and then use your customers money to go buy the item cheaper than you sold it for and have it sent directly to your customer. do a search on my channel as i have a lot of videos which discuss dropshipping.

@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
yes you can make your own lightbox here's a video showing how to kzbin.info/www/bejne/harbq3ZroNaVr9k or you can also buy them. as far as packaging your supplier will offer packaging, you just ask them for a template and they will give you a template you can bring to say a fiverr designer to design for you. many manufactures will also have an art dept they can make packaging for you as well.

Original Equipment Manufacturing is when you design a already market product in your own way and a manufacturer has to make a prototype as the sample. but what your wanting is to name brand a generic product as your own brand. you can do this at office max.
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
correct, i have done this with some items, basically tweaking an existing product. with one i added a plastic bracket over a solder point where as nobody else has that. as far as private labeling or white labeling, what service at office max can you do this with? actually get printing on a product? whats the cost like? OEM is different than private labeling like you said however in my experience with the language barrier oftentimes when I ask for branding/printing on my item tehy are actually the ones who will call it OEM. I notice there's alot lost in translation. my supplier will tell me my item was delivered when she means it has shipped.
@hossain20107 жыл бұрын
U said FOB means Air Freight but I find this - FOB is the short form term for Free On Board (or Freight on Board) and roughly translates to mean that the cost of product being delivered to the nearest port is included in the purchase price, but the purchaser is liable to pay the shipping costs from that port. FOB means Free on Board that supplier will afford " product cost + inland delivery cost", not include the shipping fee

Couple questions, when you find a product and purchase a minimum supply of it do you engrave your logo and brand on it first? Or do you just sell the product first with no brand/logo and see if it sells? Second if you purchase 100 supplies of a product and it does not sell, what do you do with the rest of the products that you bought from the supplier?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
hey eli. depends. if the product is something i've already effectively dropshipped or affiliate marketed im pretty confident i can sell the product so i may go big and private label. if im just testing i may just order 50 or 100 units of said product. if they dont sell or dont sell as planned I can always get most if not all my money back dropping price to break even price and blownig out on ebay or amazon. i i dont want to lose money as much as the next person but i will not sit on inventory for 2 years trying to get every last penny out of it. personally id rather blow it out take a 50% loss and move on if it comes to that. no sense wasting my efforts on a product thats never going to do anything. if you watch the profit you'll notice people have years worht of inventory they aren't willing to let go and marcus will come in and force them to do a sale and let everything go for a buck. the idea being a buck to put towards something better is better than a buck sitting in a warehouse hoping some day you may get your money back.

Thanks for the video! Just a few questions:What would you consider to be an 'acceptable' defect rate on items from your supplier?Do you completely eat the costs of manufacturing defects as the 'cost of doing business', or are you compensated by the supplier somehow... like perhaps free replacement of defective products on the next order? I know they are not going to want those back... well, unless it's perhaps an example of a defect that is consistent, so they can reengineer (bad solder point, weak stress point, etc.). How do you handle those sorts of quality control issues with suppliers?Do you often re-negotiate price points based on order volume if you decide to dramatically increase the size of orders?Thanks!
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
hey buddy thanks for watching and thanks for reaching out. in terms of defect rate it really depends on the type of item. i typically try to focus on simple items with few moving parts which really cuts back on the defect rate. i do deal with some parts for electronics but i probably have a less than 1% defect rate on those. want to hear about an insane defect rate. back in december when hoverboards were hot i was selling hoverboards. on a pallete of say 50 boards i regularly would have 2-3 bad boards which is a fairly high defect rate but especially hurts when each unit is say $230 to $250. my worst experience ever was i bought a new style of board the 8" with the bluetooth. On a pallet of 50 boards I had 29 bad boards. fortunately for me that wasn't a load i imported myself, it was a load i bought from anothe rimporter in the states. had it been from china i woulda been screwed, because it was a company in the states it was a bit of a a back and forth and took a few weeks but i eventually got them to take the boards back. in general when importing my experience has been the manufactures really dont want to offer any refunds or take anything back. the best chance of recourse i would say is like you mentioned trying to get a credit or replacement parts on a future order because if they want to keep your business there's some incentive on their part to want to do right by you.

+Rules For Rebels Love the videos keep em coming. I heard you mention this in previous videos that suppliers won't private label samples but my suppliers are doing it with no push back. I simply ask them and they do it without question. Question, what do you think about the merch program? Do you like it and what it has to offer?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Rj Lowery Typically before I either bother getting a sample with my label I'll order a blank product just to check quality and see if it's even something I want to put my name on. Typically they'll have smaple pieces of what a logo would look like so for example in the example of the wood baby teether they've sent me samples that say nome nome so I can see what the laser engraving would look like. If I'm happy with the quality then I'll submit my artwork and files and get a sample order. Everything is open to negotiation just have to talk to suppliers. If one won't do what you want there are dozens others.

Great video! Question, is it necessary to put a logo or brand name on a generic product. If I were to just have my logo on the packaging would it still constitute as private labeling a product. For example say if I wanted to private label socks for babies can I sell a generic brand with my logo on the packaging?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
this is kind of a tricky area. i know a lot of people leave the product generic and just get their own custom packaging made. i have actually recommended this method myself as well reason being if you can't meet an alibaba suppliers MOQ of 500 pieces to get something private labeled just go buy 50 pieces and get the packaging done seperate. your item wont have a brand but packaging will. your question however seems to be will amazon have your back and keep others off your listings and the answer is yes and no. i have seen amazon take down listings because someone isn't the origional seller and doesn't have that packaging but technically speaking if the actual product itself is not different you can't protect that listing. i think having packaging is better than nothing but its not as good as having a true private labeled product.

Thank you for your video! I have a couples questions: 1. so the plan is finding a good product to sell, and then when you sell that product well, you go for private label? 2. How much sells would you say it's well?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
its hard to put a number on, depends on a lot of factors such as is your product seasonal or does it sell year round. a seasonal product would have to have much higher sales numbers for me to even consider as its only an item you can sell for a few weeks or a few months out of the year. as for how many units, also depends on margin. i would say if you can sell an item and make enough money and have consistant enough sales to where you can meet the moq necessary for the factory to private label your item and to where your confident you'll be able to sell the merchandise fairly quickly or at least sell through all of it.

So once you figure out your brand name, logo... making sure you can get them on all platforms.... getting your sample product and once you like it.. you sell it with a low order.....if it sells you then go for the private label with baba.... then your devoting time every night or day to marketing your product through your platforms and in return you mail out the orders.....

i think if your sticking within the same product category or niche have the same brand. dont have a spatula with one brand and a bowl set with another. if you have good products and people like them people will continue to buy other stuff you roll out with the same brand. if your getting into a new niche it doesn't hurt to have a more relevant brand however you also have big sellers like the friendly swede who sell all types of categories of products under the same name

+Miztajohnson i dont think its necessary to actually start an official business until you actually start making some decent money. the one caveaut i would add to that is that if you sell a high risk product ie something that could get you used it may be worthwhile to start a business for a bit of added liability protection of your personal assets.

Hi there! So I'm curious. when you private label things and buy in bulk...do you have to have storage for all the items and then personally ship them to each customer that orders on amazon... or they stay at the factory and just ship them straight from there.Where do you put 1,000 mixing bowls?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
not all but alot of the stuff is sell is so small that storage isn't really an issue. i mean many things i can store literally thousands of units in a box on a shelf. i have dealt with larger items and yeah it is a pain my office is only about 500sq feet. i do hold a lot of inventory in amazon fba as well.

instructions and any info like that will be provided by the manufacturer as far as the boxes, your manufacturer may be able to help you with the label ie do the design work for you or at the very least they can provide you with a template which you then bring to say a designer on fiverr, they'll make the design on the template and give it back to you to give to your manufacturer

Great video however I've got some concerns regarding the creation of private labels. Wouldn't this process involve establishing Trademarks and Copyrights for your logo/brand name? I haven't heard mention of this anywhere.
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Will Duncan (DocH13) unless you have a brand which has actually proven to be a big money maker I wouldn't even bother getting a trademark. not everything you do will be a sucess and if your dropping $275 for a trademark on every product you try to roll out your throwing money away. i would wait until something has proven itself as a brand or product before shelling out the money. aslo realize a trademark is only a piece of paper which allows you to enforce your rights. if you dont have the money to go after people who infringe on your trademark its useless. if you roll out your own brand or private label of products you should register them with the amazon brand registry and amazon is much better about taking action against people infringing on your brand.

hey chayuky, things have changed a bit in the sense that these days its hard to just PL random products where as it used to be really easy to do. now days i try to settle into a niche so if im selling kitchen items im gonna stick to that, if im selling gun accessories im gonna stick to that.

How do you protect yourself from liability issues with customers when you private label? Do you carry insurance? What kind? Is it expensive?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Pamela White honestly most products are fairly low risk. i doubt your going to get sued for selling a cell phone window mount. that said if your sellign hoverboards or a supplement that people ingest you definately want to have product liability insurance. its quoted by how much you sell so as a new business you just do an estimate. it will typically run a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars for a million or two million dollar a year policy. you can also setup an llc or incorporate and that way if you get sued they can only go after the business not you personally as long as you dont break the corporate veil so to speak.

Thanks for sharing all this great content. In the video you mentioned how you should first test the waters with samples. Do you have a specific Amazon/eBay seller account just for proof of concept before you create a brand specific seller account?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
i havee a couple different amazon accounts although honestly the reason why has nothing to do with trying to keep brands segregated or having one testing account, my reasoning is my different busineses are under different llc's so for accounting reasons i can't have money from 3 different ventures being paid out into the same account so thats the only reason i have multiple amazon accounts. i see very few benefits to having multiple accounts. teh only good reason i can see is if you have a product which gets a lot of returns or in some way drags down your seller ratings or puts your account at risk you may want to segregate that product from the rest of your stuff but aside from that i dont really see a big benefit to trying to have multiple accounts.
@mahmoodkhan9318 жыл бұрын
+Rules For Rebels thanks for the advice and quick response. would you recommend leveraging my existing amazon buyer account that I've had for a number of years and just turn it into a seller account? I wanted to use your strategy of getting free /cheap products and reselling them so I thought separating my buyer and seller account would make sense

Very interesting stuff, so if I want to private label something (hypothetically) sassy chef do I need to copyright that name and the design and make a website. What legal hoops would I have to jump through to make a business( or is it even considered a business?) I'm just a little confused. Keep up the great work I really appreciate all you do!
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
most private labelers aren't actually creating new products from scratch and designing them and getting a patent. most are finding an existing product and simply slapping a brand name on them. you dont have to have a trademark to protect your brand, though it does help. personally i dont bother trademarking anything unitl a product has proven to be successful. oftentimes ill have 10 or 20 failed or so so products for every success so i would be throwing a ton of money down the drain if i paid $300 or $400 to protect every idea i had. ill typically sell and if it seems promising ill get a trademark. also once you launch a brand with one successful product and plan on continuing in teh same niche and in the same family of products it would be worth doing so. i have some other videos which explain the process a bit clearer and clear up some misconceptions but basically in 10 seconds it goes like this. find a niche/product. find a supplier on alibaba. come up with a brand name and logo ie the sassy chef for kitchenwares. go to fiverr and get a logo made in vector file. send that to supplier and choose which labeling type you want out of what they offer ie screen printing, embossing, debossing, etc. get a sample. if you are happy place your order for x number of units. buy a upc code and list on amazon.

I currently have a logo that I would like to use for my future clothing business. This logo will be used for the branding (tags) of certain apparel. Since they use fabric for branding tags, should I stick to more of simple logo where it's easier for the factories to make?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Cramzy i always think the simpler the better. the less colors it will be cheaper to print. also when you make designs too intricate if you need to print them small its hard to tell the fine details and it wind up looking bad. i prefer simple one maybe two color max and try to keep it simple line drawings.

Thank you for doing this video, it's very informative, will be following you! Regarding FBA, I really think Amazon is charging too much fees.
@rulesforrebels7 жыл бұрын
hey milk, i agree amazon is steep on fees but at the same time here's what amaozn is doing for us... 1. bringing organic traffic and providing a huge pool of buyers 2. handling our merchant processing for us 3. handling fulfillment and returns for you all these things on their own are very expensive. running adsense i spend about $1500 per month plus $750 management fee. merchant processing there are low cost options and options which take a percentage and dont charge a monthly fee but just to give you an idea i paid paypal over 87k in fees last year. and lastly fulfillment, they are storing and shipping our stuff for us. and as for handling and fulfillment obviously there's going to be a cost for that as well. amazon allows people to run huge ecommerce businesses without really being active or present in the process and there is going to be a fee for that. now it may be slightly cheaper to use shipwire or redstagg for your fulfillment however its not as streamlined and integrated as fba. im not often one to stick up for amazon but it is what it is, we have to decide if it works for us or not

Great stuff!!! Do you ever Copyright your brand or register your logo?
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Irving Saucedo I've trademarked one brand of kitchen items, in general though I typically don't bother. First off as trademark is only as strong as your willingness to go after people who infringe on it so if you dont' have the money or time to pursue that why even spend the money for it, though I do believe its a deterrant. Also so many product ideas flop and dont actually take off. I would wait until you actually have some success with a product and know its going to be worth the expense to trademark it.

Don't know about buying a few hundred samples, but if I order 5 and I receive only 4 or less, that's the last time I do business with them. And I use an international courier, so if the quantity, however small is missing some items, it means something is wrong with their logistic system, somehow somewhere.
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Mickel Tee ive never had anyone mess up a sample they are trying to impress you, im more concerned about the real order than a sample order. one tip for you, if your doing a small moq call it a sample and they may take it where as if you say i want to place an order of 20 pieces they may ignore you but if you say can i order a 20pc sample order they are more likely to accept the order.
@mickeltee20798 жыл бұрын
I did say it was a sample, and I ordered in all the available colours. Well these things do happen.

Hi this video is super helpful in 2019 so thank you!! I do have a question, some of these private labeling companies require your business to be registered. sufficient proof of business in the form of a website URL, business address, professional or business license, Federal EIN number or a Reseller's Certificate. How do you know which option is best and do you really need to have these when starting an online business? Thank you.

Hi there, what is the strategy for you to sell products through Shopify and Amazon to avoid competing directly to yourself? Thanks a lot.
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
how do you mean? whether you sell through shopify or amazon as long as your getting the sale you win. with shopify there your the only player, with amazon somene can be on your listing but see another recommended product similar to yours and leave to checkout that one so i like shopify as your the only option on the site where as amazon its you and hundreds of otehrs

Do I have to ask the company to brand the items? I have equipment that would make it easy to design and apply my custom logos. Is this okay? Also, will I have to fill out any forms or join any programs to be able to sell these on Ebay/Amazon? Thanks man, amazing channel! Subscribed.
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
the supplier normally does it. how would you apply the labels? dont do stickers they come off and it looks cheap but if you can emboss, deboss or engrave that would work. no forms to sell on amazon you'll just need a upc.
@macheters80948 жыл бұрын
My dad used to make custom matchbox cars and its less like a sticker and more like a permanent marking. You dip it in water and rub it onto the product and it sticks for good. I could also look into deboss/engraving
@matthewberklacy36467 жыл бұрын
i missed it , 1) what if you want to do say 500 quantity sample private label, and they will come down to say 1000 from a 3000 moq.. Would you walk away? 2) if you negotiate quantity sample 100 to 500, would that be their brand, and can you sell that on amazon fba if it is not oem? Do you only order a large quantity if it is oem? hey thx
@rulesforrebels7 жыл бұрын
hey matt, depends on the cost of the item. some items 1000 units may be $500 other items it may be $10,000. another thing is if ive done a small test order and the stuff sold pretty good id be much more confident buying 1000 pieces as opposed to if im just going in blind. i would suggest keep contacting a few more suppliers if one supplier has a 1000 moq another may only have a 200. as far as negotiating sample if your open to taking generic stuff the moq will be smaller. i wouldn't buy something with a chinese brand although i would buy generic and get my own custom packaging made. while not "true" private labeling it does allow you to start creating a brand and some name recognition without having to go all out on your first order.

Hey, I have a few questions on the exact nature of ordering sample OEMs. Since ordering an OEM sample is obviously a separate order from the main bulk shipment, what's the exact nature of the logistics of getting samples? Also, in this example, I'm referring to Alibaba, obviously.
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
just contact them, tell them you want to order a sample. it will probably cost $25 to $50 for a smaller item, most of this is shipping cost

If you buy 50 spatulas, who holds the stock until you can sell them? Suppose you want to sell them on Amazon? Do you ship all 50 to an Amazon warehouse? Does the seller in China drop ship them?

depends, you can hold them yourself and ship them out or you can ship them into fba and let them do it. there's also non amazon options third parties who will ship your orders such as shipwire and redstagg just to name a few

Hi Rules For Rebels!!! I really learned a lot from this video! Thank you! I was wondering about the legality of private labeling. Once I figure out that the name that I want is not taken, do I need to go and buy that domain name from each of the domains? Or do I just go and make an account with that name? Please let me know!!!
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Choi Make sure nobody has the brand name you want trademarked already, as long as it's free and clear its as simple as making up a name, comming up with a logo and printing it on your items. Alot of people want to trademark the name. Though its a good idea, its expensive and not every prodcut is successful so I'd wait until you know its going to sell before yous shell out $300 or more on trademarking your brand name, but as long as you know its going to be successful then trademark the name. Do a google search for "social media name checker" there's sites out there where you can plug in a term like "the sassy check" for example for a kitchen line. You can then see if the .com is available as well as blogger, youtube, pinterst, instagram, etc. I like to be able to get consistant branding across social media channels. Oftentimes this is hard and forces me to have to either come up with a different name or if its only one channel not available i may do "the sassy chef" for everything except say twitter and that may be "sassychef1" or something like that.

I have a question, when it comes to doing laser logo, that generally means they will put your brand name on your item? or do they draw the brand design with a laser, thanks for this amazing video man! :)
@rulesforrebels8 жыл бұрын
+Fernando Cordero It basically just looks as if its carved into the wood, its just a laser that carves or etches the design in there. For some products how the name is written doesn't matter ie embossed, debossed, laser engraved, screenprinted, in the example I gave though since it's something a baby is going to be chewing on you don't want screen printing or ink
