Hey Zac. Instead of using adjustment layers 4:55 you can also use markers by pressing M. Type in the name of your marker and thereby duration click and drag the blue numbers to the right. Click on the timeline for markers on the timeline or clips. Hope this helps

totally true, i agree with the same day edits have more life and more magic than when projects turns in weeks. Also i would say that if you shoot the whole footage or the mayority of them you have an idea of how the video is turning around at the same time you are shooting. I heard that is called shooting as an editor but correct me if i am wrong, for the other side if you are using this idea in your head you are going so much faster to the point. Also, the idea of shooting with the music in mind is sooooooo goood, if your client has an idea what they want, i hate when you finish first or second draft and they asked if you can change the music when you asked in advance for reference. Best thing for me was creating 2 timelines, one on top of the other, then dragging and piecing together the edit in the top timeline. The clips also stay in the bottom after you drag them up so you always have your selected clips without losing anything. Its great! Also when going through your footage, don't forget to use I and O to select in/out points then comma to drop them in your timeline.

A lot of people are promoting the "timeline organisation". But aren't there much better options in the "Library"? You have colors, keywords, ratings, smartbins,... and a lot more stuff, which was designed for this purpose. Is it coming from "selftaughtness" or are there some real advantages to it? Because as far as I know "professional" editors (movies, tv etc.) don't "misuse" the timeline. Some thoughts on that would be great.

I think the timeline and library must work together. BUT, only if this footage will need to be accessed later for other projects. If this is truly a "one off" and you are going to slam thru the editing to get it done, a bit of misuse of the timeline should be expected, and can even speed you along in some cases. Now, if you will need to go back and pull content from the project out for other purposes, it will be very hard without some good library organization. Simply put, you forget a lot. For me, organizing the content in the library is a crucial first step before I put anything down on the timeline.

Wyatt Fenner I uctually usually started doing his method first then copy and paste another timeline and just delete the footage in the bottom and just rename it so I can have it separated in the timeline. Also every couple of hours I duplicate my timeline that I’m editing so that if I ever have to go back for a client I can just use the other saved timeline.

I'll toss in my two cents. I do the timeline misuse like you call it. The benefit to me is that I can duplicate the timeline. I learned this from Brandon Li over at his film school. Essentially the first timeline is the raw stringout (labelled stringout), where all your footage is strung out. You go through and organize it and pick your best bits. Then I just create smaller timelines for each scene, by duplicating the stringout and deleting anything unnecessary. Then finally there is a master timeline where all the polished bits end up. Then I will duplicate the master a few times if I'm experimenting with different music, editing pace etc.

not to mention, wedding videography package rates here are similar with and sometimes cost way lower than those in America and Europe. yet Ph i think so far is the only country that offers SDE (same-day edit) wedding videos. look up Jason Magbanua, Mayad Studios, etc. every video is a SDE video.

most common wedding video team in the Philippines: 3 videographers, 1 video editor. usually editing starts after the couple are made-up and begins exporting the SDE around 10mins before the program ends (dinner time). well wedding ceremonies in the Ph are quite different compared to the US

That's how I spend up my workflow. Create different sequences for each camera used. And 2 for each. 1 with all the clips, with the selective edits on a different track. Then another sequence with all the selected edits. Along with creating differnt bins for everyhting from cameras used, timelines, and audio.

Nice video! I've done all kinds of same-day edits since 2004, but never thought about it being a special skill. Maybe I should communicate it more.. But it seems it's getting harder every year. At first, it was that productions are becoming more filmic and needed more attention (effects/color correction/stabilisation etc) than in the past when just having a video edited within a few hours was already magical. (although carrying around my mac pro and some screens was not something to be happy about) But nowadays it's just that my 2013 mac book pro can't cope with the material shot. SOmetimes things are soooo slow in premiere or fcp. Last job I did same day (or two day) edits had a mix of 4k 25p, 1080p 100fps, 5,7k 360 video and 4k DJI drone footage. I shot most of the content myself during the day and did the edit in the evening. Before I could edit I had to do a proxy or transcode, otherwise it would be a slideshow of stills during editing. But transcoding and creation of proxy files take too long when being portable. Any tips on this? What spec mbp and footage are you using. Do you use a lot of post stabilisation and color correction?

I love your style in this video. Do you tend to direct some of the competitors to look at the camera or do something specific, or just let them do their thing and film it? I shoot a lot of race videos and tend towards the latter, rather than interrupt people. Interesting that - music - would be the unifying element... aside from the importance of audio for video... music is the non-verbal, non-linear way we communicate emotions (rather than ideas) and can tell a story w/o really saying anything... at least specifically. (Personally, i’v completed four plays, but couldn’t start until the right piece of music put - it - together for me... then I couldn’t stop until they were completed. Pity I can’t actually use the music since I don’t have Rights...
