Oh dear lord she says turn the power of your light down to soften the light lol. The watts seconds of power do not change the texture or type of softness that comes out of the light lol. The one thing she fails to tell the newbies that will help them obtain soft light is the small shooting space she is using with the white walls to bounce all that light around in the room that creates extra fill with non directional soft light. 2nd She fails to mention she is using a shoot through umbrella also that spills soft light out from the back of the umbrella into the white walled room further softening the light. 3rd she is using a diffuser panel in front of the umbrella forming what is known as 360 degree soft box of sorts. The small room combined with 360 degree soft light source with white walled room all make a lot of light bounce around to truly produce soft window non directional light source. She is basically telling newbies a few of her tricks but not telling them the biggest secrets on how to achieve that soft non directional light look.

@D390X LoL been shooting full time as a living for 30 years commercially in the silicon valley. Yet you want to judge my lighting skills in the studio from what I post on my KZbin family videos?? Newbies are so funny they follow the word of some KZbin because their view counts rather then proven common sense. oh by all means please continue following the blind. Sorry but any true working professional will vouch for what I said above. Prove me wrong try turning your power up or down on your strobe it wont do a dam thing to change the softness of the light. Right about now every experience studio shooter is having a good laugh at your expense. You spoke like a true inexperienced newbie who doesnt know a dam thing about lighting. So please go do that experiment and see what happens I challenge you to prove me wrong. Try not to be such a fan boy and seek proven knowledge not what KZbin tells you. I bet you think shooting a hotshoe strobe in a soft box is what you should use instead of a bare tube studio strobe. I could toy with you and your knowledge of light all day long.

@@DigitalDesignsbyPJ Never said she had to give every single tip she uses but I would at the very least expect her not to give misguided or tell down right hilarious silly tips that are not true. She could have told some honest basic rules or tips to achieve Very soft non directional light yet she didnt she tried to 1/2 way tell you newbies some tips. Your just upset that I called her out on her silly miss guided tips which pulled the curtains open to the Wizard you want to idolize... The truth hurts sometimes just lay down and let it happen my man just let it happen...

@@CraigTM15 Craig glad to see someone is paying attention in photography class and actually knows something about light instead of letting the whole "A Popular KZbinr trumps all the rules of physics of lighting" Good luck to you my friend.

I have been a portrait photographer for more than 15 years and I am very interested in how light behaves. I agree with what you are saying. The way I see it the problem is that she talked about harsh light and it's unclear if she meant hard light or too strong light or perhaps both. And you are right, she left out a lot about the light modifier and the room and the effect on contrast and softness.

Thank you a lot for your tips! A tip in return... please avoid reflection in glasses... it was for me a bit unconfortable to watch an eye covered with reflection and the other eye as it should be.... greetings from 🇨🇭

I learned much from her tips but a bit surprised that the reflection on her glasses got past the B&H team. Was it intentional, to illustrate a point?

This can be condensed down to: "Use a soft light (1, 2) from a pleasing direction relative to the babys face (5) and expose correctly (3, 4)." Regarding exposure, is the picture @1:42 supposed to be a good or a bad example? A warning, when a youtube teacher start talking about avoiding harsh lighting, that usually means they don´t really understand the difference between hard light, contrasty light and exposure and you might as well tune them out at that point.
