I started my graphic design job in 1972. There were no computers, no Adobe, everything created by hand using felt markers, airbrushes and gouache for visuals, Letraset or Mecanorma, Rotring pens, French curves, Pantone colour sheets and sometimes we were working with 4pt white type on sheets of Pantone film to create a mockup to be photographed. Artwork drawn on sheets of CS2 or CS10 board, lots of scalpel blades and opaque white. Today is SOO much easier, faster and flexible. I would not go back for anything and I'm still working. Yeah baby!

I was a Graphic Designer who went to school in the pre-computer age from the late 1980s. I bought my first apple IICi in 1991 and still have it along will a very heavy large monitor. This computer allowed me to have a fairly thriving freelance business back in the day. I really do need to get rid of it at some point but I am reluctant because of the work I produced. Anyway, I decided to pursue a different career path that was more financially stable back then. I'm now 61 and would like to possibly dabble with this as a part-time career and the only thing holding me back is to completely re-learn all of the adobe products, web design, Imac hardware, and how to market myself in a large pool of young people. I have a really great understanding and appreciation for what is considered "Good Design." Understanding the internet and all of the tools that are available is overwhelming. I would simply like for this to be a life skill for me even if I don't make a huge income. There is so much Awful Design that is put together by those who may be tech-savvy but simply doesn't understand design principles. I'm hoping that I might have a shot at this and it's not just a pipe dream...

Super helpful that you give the distinction between the use of Grids vs the Rule of Thirds. I wish I had just stuck to this general guideline before I went all buck wild with trying to figure out the Golden Spiral / trying to calculate phi grids for all these different dimensions I'm reproducing the same design for 🙄lol. What a rabbit hole...😅 I took it way too far when I should've just gotten back to the basics! So would it be fair to say, when first approaching a landscape design to use the rule of thirds as a good starting point vs starting out with a basic column or module grid for portrait? Thank you for clarifying!
@PhilipJensen
@PhilipJensen 6 ай бұрын
The rules of first, in my opinion, is more of an overall principle that you should be aware of. I would also have an underlining grid, both horizontally and vertically. Then you can consider if you want to place a text block or an image in accordance to the rule of thirds. Also it helps if you need to reframe some photography or something to know how to deal with rule of thirds within your artwork. Hope that clarified and made some sense.

I enjoyed this video so much. Thank you so much! Do you have any tips for designers who work for a company and have to design for marketing? For Example: My boss said i´m using too much white space and that the clients don´t take the time to look at the stuff. I somehow get the "keep clients attention"-thing but it feels like i have to design differently, this causes that the design looks not as good as it should be, you know. Any Tips? Thanks!

I know this might seem obvious but when I was first starting out it would have confused me a little. When he says white space it doesn’t literally mean white space. If the background of the poster you are designing is black for example it’s still called white space. It just means the parts of the design that doesn’t have any text or pictures or anything on it.

@adi_ux

@@aaroncphelps you can do that if you to be fired out of your work. After all, it is the client who is going to suffer the loss, if they don't get enough hits from the advertisement you made. So you will have to come up with a reason of why you choose to put a white space onto the design you've made. You should know that if you're a designer...

Most of the time you won't get chance to think and you will be expected to deliver good layouts at speed of light. So don't just learn to develop good layouts but also learn to develop it at a pace. In other words learn to solve problems at a fast rate. This is a good video, but also watch as many you can and put it to practice and see what you come up with and are you able to think and think fast in resolving design problems.

Dunno how Will would answer, but I'd say start by using the fundamentals, type hierarchy, composition on a page, text vs image, appropriate font usage and grid systems. As mentioned in the video there are plenty of books that can help with these. I would also look at advertising posters that you like/dislike, analyse why you believe they work/don't work.
