To calculate how many photos I have to shoot and the individual steps I need to do, I use the FOV of Photopills. If for example I am using my Nikon Z6ii, with my 20mm lens the fov is 61,72 degrees. To have easy stitching i rotate my camera 30 degrees in each step. Most tripod heads have degrees markings to do help with this process.

Super video, Rafa and Adam; this is one aspect of MW photography I would love to be able to try. During this webinar I also bought both the book from Amazon and the Master Class for MW post processing. Thanks for everything, super interesting & informative. Eamonn

Rafael, could a suggestion for another ‘Pill’ to add to the Photopills app be for the ability to record the nodal point for various camera/lens combinations when using a nodal rail as Adam demonstrated in his video? I use a nodal rail and currently have to record my settings in IOS’ notepad, which is leas than ideal. Having it in the Photopills app would be awesome!

This is great in case I get a job working for Nat Geo but it's incredibly over-complicated for us amateur bugs. I guess I'm just an on-the-fly kind of guy, happy to screw around a bit in Photoshop to get a fun pano.

I loved the question about light pollution. It may be OK on Minorca, or in the middle of Arizona, but outside of northern Scandinavia light pollution in Europe is almost everywhere. As an example, after midnight I drove up to the Col du Marchairuz at 1400 metres (north-west of Lake Geneva) and took some shots (14mm, F2.8, ~15 sec, ISO 3200) towards the Milky Way centre. This almost lined up with Mont Blanc, but to my astonishment the results clearly show the Grandes Jorasses beautifully lit up, presumably from street lights in the Chamonix valley. Note that I was about 100 km from Chamonix. In case anyone else wants to try this, I also discovered that the lake, which is very large, gives off a significant amount of humidity, which itself is illuminated by street lights in Geneva, Lausanne, Evian and so on, making making Milky Way photography hopeless in my area given that the MW is towards the south.

At 13:49 Adam shows a wonderful panorama taken with a 14mm lens at f/2.8 25 seconds exposure and ISO3200. According to Photopills the maximum exposure time for barely noticable trails is 18,5. With 25 seconds exposure time the image has to have bad star trails ... or not?
@PhotoPills
@PhotoPills 2 жыл бұрын
That's true if you wish to prevent stars from trailing even zooming in at 100%. But if you're not planning to print the image, or only using it for social networks, then you can go for a longer exposure time and get little trails that are barely noticed. It's a matter of personal choice :)

Thank you very much for this very informative session. I have a dumb question though, apologies in advance if I missed the info already but considering I am planning a multi-row panorama (3 rows probably), will it be possible to capture the whole arc of the Milkyway, when it's max elevation is 80 degrees with a 20 mm lens?
@PhotoPills
@PhotoPills 10 ай бұрын
Sure you can! 20mm on a full frame has a field of view of 83.82º (longest) and 61.72º (shortest). So shooting a multi raw panorama will work 100%.

Thank you very much for this video, which I found super informative and helpful. I have a quick question regarding Exposure blending of panoramas, Adam mentioned at around 19 mins. When stiching the panoramas in PTGUI, sometimes some adjustments will be necessary in the panorama editor (dragging the panorama with left or right mouse click). What is the easiest way to ensure that adjustments are done the same way for both panoramas? If both panoramas do not fit exactly in position, it is way more cumbersome, to blend them in Photoshop with masks. Maybe you could provide some advice.. thank you

thank you for very every usefull class.I have two questions .In a one row panorama with 2 exposures(for the landscape and the night sky)how shoud we take the photos? 1.Shoud we take each photo whith the 2 diffrent exposures and then go to the next photo?Or 2.Shoud we take a row of photos with one exposure (landscape) and then go to the next row of exposure(night sky)? And my second question is when you dont have the motor how could you fix the problem with the stars movement during panorama photography?

What's your opinion of Hugin vs. PTGui? Both are (as I understand it) front end GUIs for the Panotools suite of panomara tools. PTGui is commercial and Hugin is free.
