I wanted to make you aware of the following: I did a lot of testing with inkjet printers instead of laser print copies. I have a Canon Pixma inkjet printer which uses a combination of pigment and dye ink. There are two methods for reliable image transfers: 1. Use brochure paper. 2. A fantastic cheap method I came across lately: just use plain paper. Use a black and white image (color converted to gray scale) and print it with your printer with normal, color (yes color ! settings). Press it onto your plate without any medium. Spray the back with water. Let it sit for a while. The water on the back of the paper will dislodge the ink. Peel the paper off and you will have a perfect transferred image. It might not work with every printer, but with printers such as Canon that use a combination of inks it works flawlessly

When you're ready to transfer the image to another paper, do you need to add paint over the image to get it to release from the gelli plate, or how does that work?
@stefaniekappel6 ай бұрын
@@jessiebrown3207 yes. Let it first dry on the gelli plate and then lift it with paint or medium..

FYI Using a Gelli Plate to make "transformative art" is legal and not subject to copyright. Andy Warhol's estate was sued and the case was thrown out due to "Transformative Art" falls under the First Amendment right to free speech as is an expression in the US at least..Andy Warhols famous prints of Cambell's Soup was not an imposter that the average person would not think the print was an actual advertisement from the Cambell's Soup company because of the crazy bright colors transforming the original image into art.

Ive never tried this geli printing but ive been seeing it every where. I used to do silk screening. Not so much photographes but mostly drawings and logos for my band. I would have to run the image into a computer to make it "camera ready" or "photo ready" (never was sure why it was called that) basically black and white only. No gray scale. Monochromatic. Thats what your print comes out as so i wonder if printing out the image that way first and then transferring it wouldn't give more control over the finished piece? Just a thought

Could you tell me what kind of paper you are using to make your laser copies? I know we should not use photo paper. But the printer gave m too many options, like “regular”, “gloss”, “card stock”, “stationery”, etc. I chose “card stock” because I thought it would saturate moisture well, but it didn’t work at all. I’m picking up all the paint even though I waited for it to dry. I tried black and white image, and a color image….all the paint comes up and th image isn’t transferring to the plate. I’m an artist, but absolute beggi Dr with the telling plate. I love your video lessons!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Are you using your own printer? Inkjet or laser printer? You need a good quality laser printer, as the toner resists the paint & makes it stick to the gel plate creating the transfer. Am using a laser printer. I had my images printed at a professional print shop on a laser printer on card stock paper. I thought maybe it was the paper I used that caused the problem. Now I'm wondering if I'm doing something clearly wrong. I put thin layer paint on the gelli mat, immediately place laser image on plate, press well, and all the paint lifts up with no image left on plate. Could this be environmental issue and maybe I'm letting the paint dry too long or not long enough(?) I used the first method you showed on the video. I live in a warm, humid climate (Hawaii) and was working outside.

Maybe the printer is lying to me (or incorrect) when they say these are laser prints? It seems like at least part of the image should be adhering onto the plate regardless of environment. This is so strange!

Do you have to first print the image on a laser printer? Can you use a regular jet print color printer like a Canon?

Hey there Froyle, are you using unwaxed lunch wrap to pull the prints - if so do you buy it as A4 precut or do you cut if yourself. I buy rolls and tear it off but would love to buy bulk A4 sheets? thanks Trish

I love your technique and the best part seems to be that there is no wait time for drying. Is this because these are laser prints. I’ve been doing image transfers direct from fashion magazines and have to wait hours for it to dry and then have to use white paint to lift. What do you print these images on before you take it to the copy shop . Are these laser copies expensive? Bonnie in Wisconsin

I take my photos on a usb stick & they print them onto standard copy paper, colour works best & they cost $1.30 in New Zealand! 👍🏼

Great Idea saving images on a USB stick, then taking that to a copy centre/shop. If you don't have a USB stick you can attach your images to an email & ph the copy centre/shop for their address to email it to them. Keep a note of the exact time you sent it, so when you're there they can trace it back & print it off. If possible support local independent copy/printing shops as they often have specialised machinery not often found in chain stores. Also they tend to have a bit more time to give detailed advice if you have more complicated copying needs.
