are there any rocks that are preferred or types to avoid for this?

You want to avoid rocks that are flat or from salt water. The best ones are the ones up in the mountains that have textures and volumes. You want the roots to try to grow along the ridges of the rock so it can grip it. Over the course of a few years it will begin to look like it grew on there naturally.
