Thanks so much for this tutorial! I’ve made several blankets using squares but this shape gives a really interesting look. I’m making mine using a mid grey border which gives a sort of stained glass effect! I’ve made a slight adaptation to the triangles by using the same colour pattern as the square, which keeps the colour pattern the same, and also made quarter triangles for the 4 corners of the blanket. The joining method was tricky to master, but I stuck at it, and the cable effect really adds a great look.

You have inspired me to make an octagon pillow. I started with a circle but I wasn’t satisfied. But when I saw your octagon I thought that’s what I’ll do.

I have watched lots of teachers regarding the octagon. They are great, but they just don't resonate with me for some reason and I can't seem to get it. With you, I understood. Thank you so much for this video. My ex who I am still friends with is from Brisbane. Is your accent Australian or New Zealand. I get them confused sometimes. lol Is it correct, if you want to make a huge octagon, to just continue on with this pattern? Or continue with the last row on repeat. How?

That's so cool of you to say!! Thanks so much. I am Australian 😊 I'm truly not sure this Octagon would be easy to continue to work into a big octagon.. but if you DID... then the last two rows (omitting the single crochet edge round) would be the logical ones.. but that might get tricky with continuing to ensure it remains flat. I DO think the last round (ignoring the S/C edge round) would be able to be done a few more times, creating a bigger shape, without those rounds detracting from the design in the centre! Hope that makes sense Olivia!! Happy Crochet to you 🤗

@@CrochetTutorials11 Thank you. It makes perfect sense. Do you know of an octagon pattern that is made to be huge? I want to make a doona. I'm hesitant to try bc I am and have always been very, very slow in everything I do and after that much effort, it would be heartbreaking to have to start again with a different pattern. I wonder how bad it would be if it did curl up as long as it retains it's shape? You are the expert, what do you think? Oh, lastly, I have a defunct shop called Octagon Infinity which I hope to reopen soon. Octagon Infinity has always been "my word" lol.

OH!!! That is very cool.. I do see why you want to make a continuous one! I had a look at a few charts and patterns for big octagons and I DO think you can do it with this one. ALL of the others I saw had a very similar central section, where you set up the structure... so perhaps the size of the octagon dwarfing the central motif is not such a big deal? I think you can make this continuous by working all your subsequent rounds as a DC into each stitch and 1DC, CH2, 1DC into each corner space. When I was initially thinking of increasing the size of this, I was thinking of using the two rounds (last round and the cluster together rounds) to keep that pattern going and I think it's the cluster round which would create the challenge, in ensuring you had sufficient stitches so the octagon will remain flat. But that final round of SC is just a stitch in each DC and two stitches separated by a chain two in the corners.. so you could continue with DC instead of SC from there and it would remain quite flat. If it did 'curl' at all, you'd know pretty quickly and would just require additional stitches for the corners. But to be honest, I think the weight of the piece at that size would stop it curling significantly, although perhaps the final round would lift slightly.. kinda like it does in this size. Bearing in mind though, octagons tend to create a bit of a 'pin wheel' effect in the line of spaces which radiate from the corners... but I think that's actually quite a nice soft, almost flowing effect. So.. in short (I have used a lot of words here to say this haven't I? hahahahaha) It's doable!!

Good instructions but you're not in camera range a lot of the time. Perhaps make a mark in your middle camera range on the background fabric so you would know where you are.

hmmm.. not exactly sure what is going on for you.. but my insert squares did look a tiny bit curved. Not hugely though. If your squares are very curved, then perhaps the corners aren't right?
