How to Crochet a Starburst Granny Square

The thing I love the most about granny squares is that you kind of complete a part of the project after every square. It always feels like WOW I completed something and get to start over with a new square lol as someone who goes to school and work full time I find it hard to complete any projects, so it's nice to be able to feel like you accomplished something quickly... even if you needed what seems to feel like a MILLION squares you still get that satisfaction from completing something.

Not sure if it will help arthritis, but I have severe carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands. I wasn’t able to crochet for years but recently found a handle that is kind of egg shaped and I can use it for hours without pain. It holds many sizes of hooks. It’s really helped me, and may be worth looking into.

For anyone who doesn't know, the light green row where she says she doesn't know the name, is a Double Crochet 4 Together cluster. The pattern abbreviation is dc4tog, but it could be any number of stitches being worked together. 3 stitches is dc3tog, 10 is dc10tog and so on. Happy stitching! I have been crocheting since I was 12. I'm now 65! Still crochet. The mystery stitch we have always called the "cluster" stitch. Oh, thank you so much for this clear explanation. I am mightily confused by stitches holding different titles from English ones but you explained each so well. For the newbies out there like myself, while doing the puff stitches, if you keep your working hand pointing finger on the yarn while going in and out of the stitch, it really helps. I would always slip yarn off or make a mess of it. It just keeps the stitch neat and orderly 😊

That was one of my first projects! I made a bigger than king-sized granny square for our bed when I got married. After that I made another giant granny square and entered it into a contest at the Grange here in Texas. It was my very first contest and I won the blue ribbon for it! I miss that blanket. This was an excellent tutorial. I learnt all the basic stitches and have done some scarves and followed one basic granny tutorial so Im not a total beginner but still very new to it..but this was so easy to understand and I really enjoyed it. I cant count to save my life so when I finished it needed two of the half stitches on one side. But I’m so pleased with it!! I learned how to crochet when i was 6 by my grandmother and ive now taught my younger brother and husband its a hobby for any age some people are too rude to realize its a beautiful artform

Lisa, my Oma taught me crochet when I was little, maybe 8 or 9. She taught me on white number 10 crochet thread (GAH)! I started out making lots and lots of chains, and then decorative flowery bookmarks with single, double and treble crochet. My husband can crochet, too! Anyone who says that you like crochet because you're getting older will be the ones who won't get the cool handmade gifts from you - let them drool over the beautiful scarves, sweaters and blankets that everyone else gets. Haters gonna miss out. :)

My grandmother learned when she was five and made Clones* lace blouses, gloves, tablecloths, and a mountain of other things. I've taken it up in the last few years (in my 20's) and try to make gifts for family on special occasions to continue the tradition. * "Clone-iss" is a small town in Ireland, after which the Clones Knot and a style of Irish crochet lace is named. Also where I'm from. :)

Hi, I enjoyed your video and the way you explained everything. As it has been a long time ago that I did some crochet (when I was at primary school, will be 65 next week) I really had to start all over again. Bit difficult as it is not in my own language either, so I had to learn what you you call the stitches, (even in my own language have forgotten the how to do the stitches even though I know the names) I had to stop and restart the video clip as you were talking a bit to fast for me. But I had a beautiful Granny square at the end :)

That's the great thing about videos: you can stop and rewind as much as you need. :) I learned the basics from my grandmother's books and went to a few classes with Máire Treanor (Irish crochet specialist), but after that videos and articles on the internet taught me everything I know. :)

Larger hook, more rounds makes a larger square. But adding more rounds might mess up the sunburst effect of the first three rounds.

I think you just simply double every amount of stitches, so when you begin, do 10 chains instead of 5, and then do 16 x 2 for the inner circle, etc etc ❤️❤️

The stitch in the mint is a "double crochet 4 together" or dc4tog.

To make larger square, after slip stitch in Triple, slip stitch to next space, chain three , double crochet two times, then 3 double crochet in each space to corner, 3 double, chain 3, 3 double, continue around, to chain three, slip stitch in third stitch of chain 3. This can be done, until square is as large as you want it.

I have always used simple granny squares made of shells ( 3 double stiches) and single chain. This was lovely and you explained it clearly with easy to follow directions. You're doing a great job and have taught me something new. Keep up the good work!

Also when stitching colors together you dont have to tie the next color you can simply create a slip knot on second string place over hook then insert into hole yarn over and pull through then chain 3. It's easier and you dont have to bury as much of your yarn at the ends.
