Hello, Sandi! Great question! I am assuming you are considering using one of our Bonnie Craft Cord for the Double Crochet & Scallop? If so, I'm going to share a video you might enjoy. The video is for Fabric, but you will use the same technique with the cord. The difference will be that you will tie a loose knot at the point of transition (rather that connecting the fabric using the no-sew/slit method). And then continue on with your Double Crochet & Scallop border! It's right before the 5 minute mark: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKGne6mGbtaasNk The reason I always recommend a "loose knot" is so that you can adjust the knot to be least visible at the transition point. Tighten it down and then weave in the ends using your crochet hook or a latch hook.

Good Morning! What size of rug are you interested in making? Once you decide the size, you simply subtract the finished width dimension from the finished length dimension. That # is the number of foundational chains you will begin with. Yes! You can use this pattern for both fabric (we use a 2" wide strip) & 6 mm jute. If you are using the same "Q" sized hook we used & yield an approximate 1" gauge, your width divided by 2 is the number of rounds to complete your rug! Here's a video you might enjoy watching! Hello! The ideal size hook to use when working with our 6 ply Jute or our 6 ply Bonnie Craft Cord is a "Q" (16mm). But keep in mind that you can use this same pattern to crochet FABRIC rugs. We use the same "Q" hook with our 2" wide fabric strips. If you want a tighter weave, a "P" size works ideally - particularly for placemats! Some cut their fabric strips 1 1/2" wide clear up to 3" wide. I normally decide my fabric rug projects & the hook I'll be using based on the width & the weight of the fabric used. The heavier the fabric, the narrower my strips. The lighter the fabric the wider my strip. And I normally ONLY use a Q or P hook.

Thanks for reaching out! I LOVE jute & the I too LOVE the way it looks, the way it feels, and I love its earthy smell! I really love how well it wears .. very durable! I don't feel that it's any harder to work with than fabric or cord - in my opinion and I've made hundreds of jute rugs. I have a bit of arthritis in my hands too but haven't noticed much stress working with jute. I DO crochet fairly open. In that I mean, I don't ever find myself pulling on the fiber I'm using as I'm crocheting. Instead allowing it to slip easily through the loop on my hook. Possibly that's why I don't experience the stress you are describing. I feel that those who crochet a little tighter than myself struggle more with hand & finger stress. I would give it a try!

Yes, thanks for asking! Febreeze works really well! Keep in mind that in short time the "earthy" smell of jute will dissipate. Sometimes just a few days. Will your new video on oblong rugs from center outward be a different technique than using the v-stitch or the same technique just better quality video? Old video is a bit hard to follow & be correct on which stitch to go into but do-able after viewing a few times. Also, would you wash the oval jute rug & only in the tub? Thanks.

Hello!! Thank you for reaching out! Same technique but MUCH better quality! Yes, I completely agree. The older video is VERY hard to watch & learn from. I'll try to have the new video up soon! I don't recommend washing your jute rug in a tub or wash basin as we might with our fabric rugs. Instead, please consider spraying with a garden hose & allowing to dry on a deck perhaps. Hello, Nancy! That's the beauty of my pattern! You can create virtually ANY size of rug using the pattern! The ONLY thing that changes is the # of starting foundational chains. To determine the # of chains, simply subtract the desired finish width from the desired finish length. The difference is your # for starting chains! Starting with 24 stitches as you've shared, you could (as an example) make a rug that is 24x48". 48 minus 24 = 24. Crocheting at a 1" gauge, you will plan to complete 12 rounds to reach a rug that is 24 x 48". (24 divided by 2 = 12 rounds) As another example: If you were to again start with 24 stitches, you could make a rug that is 30 x 54". 54 minus 30 = 24. Crocheting at a 1" gauge, you will plan to complete 15 rounds to reach this size rug. (30 divided by 2 = 15 rounds) The starting foundational chains is the MOST important part of creating a rug because it dictates the overall size & shape of your finished project. From then on, simply follow the pattern for the ends of each round!! Does that make sense? If not, PLEASE reach out again!!

You'll probably want to use a smaller hook than the "Q" that I used. And if so, you will need to consider those starting foundational chains to arrive at your desired overall rug size. Without knowing what your gauge will be using the 4mm jute, I can't tell you how many to plan on. I'm not sure? I've never tried that. If you decide to try that, make certain what you order is jute (sometimes called jute cord or jute rope) not jute twine. It's sometimes hard to tell the difference particularly if you are ordering on line. Jute is much heavier than jute twine and what we use is a 6 ply. Keep me posted. Good Morning! Happy you reached out! What you want for these rugs is a 6mm/6ply - the perfect weight to use with a "Q" sized crochet hook. It may not seem like much, but the difference between 3mm & 6mm is a lot! What you picked up I suspect more of a Jute Twine. I normally use a jute twine to make small craft items or for a decorative crocheted edge. Over the years working with jute I've learned there are many terms used. There is Jute, Twine, Jute Twine, Cord, Macrame Cord, Bailing/Landscaping Twine - just to name a few. And then of course you have to study the weight of the cord/twine. Each make a HUGE difference! Without seeing the product you have, it's hard for me to determine what size hook to use. So sorry!!

Hello! I love creating rugs with both methods! Tough question!! If I HAD to choose between them however, I would choose crocheted. The primary reason would be portability. You can take a crocheted rug project with you anywhere - in the car, on the couch with family, to a friends house, to the beach - just to name a few! With toothbrush/amish knot I prefer to work on the flat. And generally you'll find me at my dining room table with my project laying on my wool ironing mat. I can quickly move the project when it's time to eat. However, back to the table when I return to it. You could easily set up a card table if you wanted to watch a movie with family while working on it, but there simply isn't room in my living room for that. Some friends make toothbrush rugs in their laps. I've never had success keeping my rug shaped nicely & laying flat doing this. I would like to make a suggestion, just for you to try. I start with a slip knot and chain 10-12 crochet chains as the foundation. Then I use the toothbrush tool and go around the foundation on each side of the chains. I add the fabric as you do. But I don’t use a runner thread. I continue to loop around the previous row and knot as you would a toothbrush rug, just no internal runner. It makes for a lower profile rug. Softer and less fabric needed. Let me know if you try it. Your video tutorials are wonderful. You keep saying how cheap the supplies are but obviously you don't live in Canada. For every video I have looked up the supplies and everything is horribly expensive for us and shipping is out of this world these days. Very sad. :( The cheapest I could find the Bonnie cord was two balls for $30. and that was on amazon. I would have to buy two sets and that would be $60. so no making a bunch of rugs for family and friends. It's so discouraging.

Hello!! 6mm/6ply jute is a heavier weight & perfectly appropriate for our floor rugs - it's comparable to what is used often for hanging baskets (also known as macrame cord). It's strong & it's durable. There is a lot of confusion when it comes to jute. There is jute twine, jute rope, jute string, burlap, & sisal to name a few. Online pictures can be confusing. What looks like a giant roll of 6mm/6ply jute can actually be a small roll of 6mm/6ply jute TWINE. We've heard from MANY disappointed customers from this quandary. A 900 ft. roll of 6mm/6ply jute should weight between 6 & 7 pounds. Anything less will most likely be jute twine, or landscaping jute. Does that help?
