Yarn over is great for flat items, or cardigans, etc. Yarn under is great for smaller, denser, shaped work, such as amigurimi. Neither is wrong or incorrect as you stated through the whole video.

I think what she's saying is that patterns are generally designed for YO patterns and using YU will produce an item that doesn't match the gauge etc. I realized that I have had those issues because I've sometimes used YU without even thinking about it.

I was thinking the same thing. When I first started crocheting, I used to yarn under while I was making hats. Lots of my crochet friends couldn’t get over how tight my hats were coming out. Then when I was trying granny squares they weren’t looking nice. Then my one crochet friend she was showing me then difference between yarning under and over. She said there is no right or wrong way to crochet but it can make a difference in what type of project you are making. She said typically most projects are yarning over and not under. But amigurumi is definitely one you would want to use the yarn under technique because of it being tighter. She did say in the video that the gauge between the two is definitely different and the tension is tighter. Which you can clearly see. But I agree with you, neither way is wrong but they have different purposes. I like being versatile and enjoy making anything from clothing to amigurumi.

Yarn under is way easier, tighter and is way more efficient in my opinion. I think it is more important to find something that works for you. There is no technical right or wrong. There is a right place for everything.

I learned how to crochet by doing the yarn under technique, mostly because it was the most comfortable with the fact that I'm left handed. It's interesting to see the different ways to crochet, I dont necessarily think yarning under is the wrong way though if you're able to control your tension.

I yarn over by habit but I do like the yarn under look here, I’ll keep it in mind for when I need something tighter. I’m not bothered by any twists and I think it’s more a case of what each person is most comfortable with etc. I’m glad I know about yarn under if I’m low on yarn . Great video thank you xx

About 45 years ago when I started crocheting, I learned using the YO method. And, in my opinion, it is easier than YU. While either method is an acceptable way, YO is my GOTO method. When you demonstrated the Tunisian YU method, it seemed to be very difficult to perform, so, I said (felt) "Ouch!" LOL ! I had just watched a video about how to do the Tunisian Smock Stitch, and, was shown to use both YO and Yu for that stitch. So, like you said, it depends on what effect you're going for as to which method you should use. And, I get why you say YO is correct .... Especially when making garments, with YO, your tension is more relaxed, and, your gauge will be better as that's the method most people use when working out a pattern for you to use. TYSM for sharing this video with us. I've been looking for such a video which explains these differences.

I find that combining the two when working in the round minimizes the misalignment of the point where you change rounds. The tendency is that it’s moving to the right if you’re right-handed. If you finish your stitch, be it sc or dc, with a yarn under (YU) this problem is more or less eliminated. So when I make a sc I do it YO+YU and for a dc it would be YO+YO+YU. Not sure if this makes any sense to anyone but wanted to share it anyway 🤣

For some reason I had a bit of trouble until I noticed that you place you have your yarn coming in at the back of your finger. I have always had my yarn on the front of my finger. Once I used your way I had no problem. Now I’ll have to practice your way so that I do it automatically. Thank you for all these crochet tips. I have been crocheting for 45 years, but looks like I still have a lot to learn.

99% of the videos you can follow along with say “yarn over” - and it’s how I learned to crochet 20+ years ago. I *never* tried yarn under until a random Reddit post on amigurumi mentioned yarn under plus front loop only, gave both a try for my next amigurumi project and GEEZ does it make a difference! Tighter, tidier stitches for sure - but I’ll continue to use yarn over for things like scarves and blankets since it makes a looser, “drapier” stitch.

I do the same thing for amigurumi. YU then YO to finish the stitch. The YO/YU to finish the stitch doesn’t really change the look of the stitch, only the tension. However, the first YO/YU is what changes the look of the stitch.

I wonder if there’s a correlation between people who YU and are pencil grip crocheters vs. YO people who are also knife grip crocheters. Seems the most ergonomic with those pairings. Also, people who hold the loops on their hook with their index vs. the thumb. Hmm…🤔

Great video, Nicki... You explained the difference between yarn under and yarn over very clearly. I saw a discussion about this a while back with a couple of the ladies insisting it didn't make any difference if you did yarn over vs. yarn under and that they weren't crocheting incorrectly doing yarn under. I wish they would have a chance to watch your video and see that there's a huge difference in how the crochet project turns out. I actually saw a video about a year ago where the "teacher" was teaching beginners using the yarn under method! I can't remember who it was anymore but I wish she could watch your video as well! Anyway, I've rambled on long enough! Thanks, Nicki, for taking the time to make this excellent video... I'm sure it will help a great many crocheters who aren't sure about yarn over vs. yarn under. ☺️

Agreed. I see lots of crocheters saying that they're doing a YO and even teaching or writing patterns, but then in their videos, they'll do a YU. Or sometimes they alternate during the same stitch. There is a difference. People seem to get offended. If the pattern says to YU for smaller, tighter projects, then do that, but don't call it a YO.

Thanks for the tutorial Nicki. I've been crocheting since I was 7 or 8 and I'm now 56, and I've never seen anyone do 'yarn under' until a few days ago when I went looking for Tunisian Crochet tutorials. I came upon one where they were doing the 'yarn under', and I almost had to twist myself inside out to watch, and then wondered if I'd been crocheting wrong my whole life. So thanks for putting my internal left, right, over, under sensors back on track. So given that 'YO' gives you a looser tension, does this mean that you don't need to go up a size or two for your hook, which seems to be suggested on most places I've looked?

I guess this explains why I can never seem to loosen up the tight tension on my crochet until I go up so many hook sizes that the work gets sloppy. The tight tension is why I don’t enjoy crochet as much as knitting. It does make good stiff hat brims, though.

For amigurumi, I only YU when working with “smooth” yarns to tighten everything up and minimize holes. But when working with chenille yarn for amigurumi, I YO since the chenille isn’t as stretchy so by yarning over, I add more flex/squishiness. Plus, I crochet much faster by yarning over. For all the other projects, I YO as it’s what I was taught and find the fabric I create is a little stretchier that way.

It still leaves gaps, because you're fighting to get into stitches and the right stitches aren't very plump. I wouldn't recommend yarn unders for beginners, because they might feel frustrated with the tight stitching... harder to do.

I use the yarn under and finish out with a yarn over.. makes a neater stitch for amigurumi. The double yarn under is annoying for me. I guess everyone is different as I don’t struggle doing a yarn under for the first part of the stitch I do go up half a hook size when doing this method though.
