Shamgar 331 LOL. My very first crochet project was a blanket for my newborn son. It turned out a triangle! 😫My son is now 40 years old and I discovered he still has that blanket! I’ve come a long ways since then😁 I am now crocheting a very pretty blanket for my granddaughter who is due in April.

I am a total beginner and just crocheted my first piece - called it a "learning blanket". There are many funky edges on the bottom rows, but by the top they are much straighter, as I came upon this technique on my own. I was so glad to see someone who knows what they are doing promote this. Thank you so much!

This is perfect. I'm used to making hats for babies in a nearby NICU, but recently started also making 7"x 9" rectangles for Warmup America blankets and this technique has finally given me nice, even straight edges without mysterious "growth"! And I am using it with double crochet with 2 turning chains. Thank you so much!

TO ME THIS GOLD! I have been so confused about how to turn to crochet even edges after watching so many videos that showed different methods. I learned nearly 50 years ago to skip 1st sc & work into the 2nd leaving the unsightly gap. I've been trying to get back into crochet and didn't realize there are so many different ways to turn! I think I'll keep it simple from now on and use this way. Seems like I always make things harder on myself than they really are. Thank you for a wonderful basic, easy-to-understand video!

You only stitch into the 2nd stitch with double crochet to allow for the height of the turning chain (which is a stitch in most patterns). What she's showing has always been the way to do it with SINGLE crochet.

The proper or traditional crochet actually does work into the first stitch. Many people just learned it wrong. It only applies to sc and hdc. You are doing everything correctly according to the proper crochet technique. Good tutorial.

I have been crocheting for over 30 years and no one has ever told me this. I can't even begin to count how many times my end was not straight and I ripped out rows and rows of work to redo it. (I'm a bit ocd about my work being perfect. I won't fix something, I take it out and do it again correctly.) See, you really can teach an old dog new tricks. 😉 lol. 🎄Merry Christmas everyone.🎄

Lynn - oh my God! I am the same way! Luckily I only really got into crocheting recently so I haven’t had to go back and undo tons of work that many times. But yes, I agree that this is a great tip/technique for ensuring straight edges. Only negative thing about me learning this is that the crooked edges at the beginning of the scarf I am almost finished with are going to annoy me even more now haha. I wonder if I can untie the yarn at that end and unravel it to where it becomes straight, then rework it with straight edges, almost like working backwards. I’m not sure that would work though, if that would make the stitching backwards and not look uniform with the rest of the scarf that was crocheted normally?

Thank you SO much. I've been crocheting off and on for over 10 years and each time I try to learn a new project I'll see one person start in the first loop, another say to never do the first loop, etc. I never knew which one was right and it makes so much sense that it would affect whether or not you use the turning chain. I thought I was losing my mind every time I watched a tutorial for a pattern and someone did it differently. Thank you for clearing the air on that! ❤️

I can't agree more. Every video I watch has different instructions about where to start the first stitch. I'd hear to always start on the second chain, then watch another and they start in the first. Or chain two extras for every project, but others don't. So frustrating!

You have all made me laugh with your descriptions of zigzag, trapezoid and other undesirable shapes.. You made me forget that I continue to have this problem with almost every project I start. I tear stitches /rows out and do it over and over until I finally come back to rewatch the video and finally get it right. Thank you for the giggles and showing me I am not alone v in this big bad world of uneven rows. 🙂🧶

Oh My Goodness! Thank you so very very much!! I am 60years old & learned to crochet when I was 9. I can do anything I set my mind to with crochet except create a straight edge every time. I have pulled out miles of yarn in order to go back and get my edge straight. I will be thanking you for the rest of my days! Bless you!

YES! Thank you!!! I'm so tired of following the pattern exactly and winding up with edges that aren't perfectly straight. I make really even, consistent stitches and couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting straight sides.

Me too! My problem wasn’t as much having the rounded “bumpy” edges, but when I tried to “fix” it I either ended up adding too many stitches or subtracting too many. I will try this method.

Note-if you are a knitter too, you can get straighter edges by slipping the first stitch on every row purl-wise. Look up “straight edge knitting” videos here on KZbin.

@ivankaghpickering

Estelle you do it like this because it IS the traditional way to correctly do single crochet. You only skip the first stitch when doing double crochet or larger. With single crochet. The chain one for the turn is not big enough to count as an actual stitch so that's why you have to make your first single crochet in the very first stitch instead of skipping it as you would with larger stitches (dc and larger)

Skipping a stich as traditionally taught has made ne looses stitches over several rows. I exoetiemdnted with the method on this video before I'd seen it. It really does work and I'm so glad j saw your video to show me why it worked. Thank you!❤

Thank you, thank you, and thank you again for reminding me my basics in crocheting. I learned how to crotchet 42 years ago when I ceased a little girl and this was the technique taught to me back then. I never had to worry about sloppy or uneven work. We didn’t have crotchet markers back then, Just technique. I’m so happy that I ran across your KZbin tutorial. Woohoo 🥳. I”ll follow up with my end results. 🥳🥳🥳🥳
