1. I always straighten images to vertical lines as they are always level. The horizon is rarely level. 2. When I crop then I crop some more. 3. I crop bodies all the time for more impact. Avoid cropping at joints. 4. I do prefer the ball in the action. Also player reactions, portraits, and player collisions. 5. I only shoot vertical/portrait for sports. Maybe landscape for that rare large group shot.
