Prepare Substrate:
Mix 2 parts vermiculite, 1 part brown rice flour, and 1 part water in a bowl until you achieve a consistency like wet sand.
Fill Jars:
Fill each glass jar with the substrate mixture, leaving about half an inch from the top.
Sterilize Jars:
Place aluminum foil over the jar openings and sterilize the jars in a pressure cooker or pot for about 90 minutes.
Inoculation:
Once sterilized and cooled, inject spores into the jars using a spore syringe through the inoculation points.
Incubation:
Place the inoculated jars in a dark, warm (75-80°F or 24-27°C) location for about 2-4 weeks. Mycelium should grow throughout the substrate.
Prepare Growing Chamber:
Line the bottom of the growing chamber with a layer of perlite. This helps maintain humidity.
Birth the Cakes:
Once the jars are fully colonized with mycelium, birth the cakes by removing them from the jars and placing them on top of the perlite in the growing chamber.
Fruiting Conditions:
Maintain a temperature around 70-75°F (21-24°C) with high humidity. Use a hygrometer and thermometer to monitor conditions.
Lighting:
Provide indirect light for about 12 hours a day. Natural light or a fluorescent grow light works well.
Harvesting:
Harvest the mushrooms when the caps have opened up and the veil beneath the cap is visible.
Spore Printing (Optional):
If you plan to grow more mushrooms, you can make spore prints from mature mushrooms for future use.
