As a 25 y/o high school teacher, I agree that the most pernicious mindset that has been readily propagated and just as easily swallowed is the idea that no one has control over their lives, and all misfortune is irreparably calamitous. I see this affecting all children, regardless of background, unless they are raised by fiercely encouraging and sensible parents, which is not many, as the parents themselves are usually prey to this mentality. This descent off the cliff is expedited by technology, of course; my students wear their airpods and headphones all day, including when I'm teaching. I used to think they were disrespectful and obsessed with pop culture, but I've come to the sad realization that they need a medium through which they can drown out the discomfort of their own thoughts. They simply cannot tolerate silence. I've used some of your videos in class for educational purposes, in a unit about habits, headspace, and consistency. I appreciate your concise, firm, and truthful approach in your videos, and you've made an impact on some of my students. Heck, you've made an impact on me. Thank you.

do you as a teacher find students today having short attention spans compared to your generation? like you gotta make your lesson eye-catchy/attention-grabbing like those KZbin videos otherwise they get bored or not gonna listen? I mean I turn 25 this year tho I'm not a teacher but my bud is about to be one, and these days I sometimes think about it and concern about the future generations...
@mairav61912 ай бұрын
@user-cs9by8jd6l Absolutely, and that's just scratching the surface. A lower attention span is only indicative of other serious issues, like a lack of internal monologue and self-initiated thoughts. @betterideas explains some of these symptoms in other videos, and he's spot-on. They are taught passivity, like life is something that happens to them, and if they could, they would swipe up on people just like they do to TikTok videos. I'm trying not to have generational blindness, as if my generation (older Gen Z) is far superior; it's clear we've been on a slippery slope for a while, but social media and AI has knee-capped most young people. I love teaching. I love kids. The education system is broken, and my heart goes out to both teachers and students. If I'm blessed with kids one day, I'm home-schooling. I advise everyone else to do the same if possible.

I had the most surreal experience two weeks ago. I had only decided to go get an ice cream around the corner to return home alone on my goon session so I left without my phone. My local ice cream shop was closed, so I ventured on until I could find one. I ended up walking across town for hours, talking to people, enjoying views of the city and feeling more vividly awake than ever. Nobody was there to bring my back to my routine of binging and I was free to do whatever I wanted. I had a few beers, got an ice cream and listened to the sounds of street cars passing by. My final stop was at a comic book store where I spoke some more and they gave me a gigantic trading card. Was so much fun.

I identified this issue and it's generally boredom and sadness. As a result, my grades have fallen and my mind always feels blank nowadays. I can't study at all and this constant procrastination is killing me. I want escape, that's why I'm going to try this new routine for 7 days and hope to improve my situation.

I loved this video. The third tip particularly is great. Here's my summary of the video: Stupid idea: external forces cause us to do certain things and you are not in control over your own actions. Truth: nothing can make you do anything. You are in full control over all of your actions. You have free will. Practical ways to remember this mindset and counteract brain rot: 1. Be conscious of mental posture and structure your day with that in mind. Avoid passive mindset: consuming content all day. Don't start your day by getting into this KZbin rabbit hole, being a passenger and a consumer of things. Start the first half of the day with aggressive and proactive mental posture. Don't go on your phone. Go get your coffee or whatever you want to do. Start your day off slow, with very little stimulation, and start thinking about the things you want to do that day. Your imagination has time to breathe and your motivation kicks in if you don't flood it with consumption. You start thinking of ways that you can play your poker hand to the best of your ability. 2. Delete stupid apps and notifications Eliminate apps that you waste a lot of time on, that pull you into this habit of consumerism. Disable most notifications. Only need to be notified about text messages or phone calls. Avoid notifications and reduce phone pickups that will pull you out of being a proactive person in your life. 3. Make yourself present Do as many things as you can that pull you into the present moment. Can be things that you genuinely enjoy doing. Play hockey, go to the gym, go for a walk, grab coffee with a friend.

The comments all have hundreds of likes and very few or no replies. Combine that with the odd-looking book site, claims of '13,500+ positive reviews' with no proof, and three reviews from 'real people' who - when googled - return no results on the actual people existing. I hope someone will read this, as it's some genuinely life changing information. Removing all your compulsions is extremely hard, letting go of that sense of novelty can be done, but it's extra hard. One thing you can do, if you struggle with the discipline, is keeping the habit but replacing it with something healthier. For example, I had a hard time completely letting go of the novelty factor of infinite scroll, but I ditched mindless doomscrolling on instagram stories, with infinite scrolling on art platforms (Cara being my favourite). I still scroll, but at least I only see beautiful art and my lust for novelty is still satisfied Same thing with wikipedia. Instead of wasting time on youtube shorts, I search for a random topic on wikipedia. Technically it's still procrastination, but at least much less destructive.

Best action on a game you can’t win is to not play, if you’re able to (not) do so. I also really liked this one, because I’ve had a lot of friends losing it lately (and I myself, admittedly did for a bit) on the recent election. I’ve also had family members catastrophise both of the US’s possible outcomes…. 5:35 "You individually don't make a difference in the outcome" is a actually a dangerous statement because people might be discouraged to actually go out and vote. I'm not from the US so I'm still grappling to understand the electoral college system. But in other parts of the world where popular votes count more, individual votes do make a difference. I understand the message you're trying to convey the entire video but using the election as an example of "having the illusion of decision" at a time when democratic institutions are in shambles might not be a good idea. But cheers man. Appreciate your content.

I prefer to replace the term of 'brain rot' with the word 'temptation', since it's more or less the same thing (or at least a synonym of it). It can very much be controlled if you place barriers in the way to prevent yourself getting tempted in the first place. Have a sugar addiction? Make sure there's none in the house. Addicted to social media? Log-out every time you exit the platform making it hard to get in. Have a huge crush at someone at work, but don't want to risk workplace relations? Find ways where you can spend less time around the person (changing work hours, having breaks around different people, working from home, moving departments). There's almost always a tangible and practical solution for each day-to-day task and I believe everyone has the ability to achieve what they can.

The problem is people don't have the discipline to control themselves, so they make excuses or reality as to why they can't stop themselves from indulging.

@@TravisHi_YT That is super true, and they won't realize these mistakes unless it's accurately pointed out to them and they make the effort to change.. but alas you cannot change everyone, only show them the way.

And the best part is that when you said “it’s over” an add of instagram popped up and interrupted the video

The double video thing is so annoying, but so so clever. I'm not even mad at the guy who created it. I'm just impressed.

I always find the lack of free will as an alleviating feeling and not a feeling of helplessness.

A year ago I quit drinking. I supplemented my new free time in the evening with anti-drinking content and hearing inspiring stories about people who had stopped for years at that point. I got rid of tik tok, instagram, Reddit, and the KZbin app (shorts were contributing to brain rot, not so much the video essays and podcasts I like). It was WILD what my internal monologue was like for four or five days after I deleted the apps. It’s like every quiet moment of my day was filled with snide little remarks, or general chatter. It’s like my brain was craving a comment section and all its vitriol. I’ve been listening to a lot of good anti doomscrolling and anti brain rot content lately and I’m filled with the same optimism I felt last year when I stopped drinking. :)
