This might sound insane but I learned how to stop my hiccups by doing very slow and deep inhales, calming my brain and thinking to myself “I am no longer going to hiccup” I do my best not to anticipate the next hiccup. And I swear to god it stops instantly. I even tried this method with friends and it worked! They were astounded. I’m convinced more than ever that The mind is a very powerful tool. And we probably can do far more then we’re taught with it.

9 out of 10 times, my hiccup starts *THE VERY MOMENT* I put my head on the pillow to go to sleep... When i hicc, I don't play around, I do it loud and aggressively, and I don't stop... I can literally hicc for 2-4 hours and there's no sleep that night. I'm familiar with the other 3 methods, which never work, but the paperbag one is new to me. I'll try that one. Definitely worth a try. And the explanations as to the why, how and when seem reasonable to me. On a sidenote, my hiccups have drastically decreased in frequency to now being quite rare since I started on healthy Keto, so clearly something has changed. Eric Berg has been my main mentor on the keto path, and it has been a major success, major benefits, so much appreciation from me. I'm grateful.

Hiccups are also caused by pressure on the vagus nerve. From the Mayo Clinic: "Nerve damage or irritation A cause of long-term hiccups is damage to or irritation of the vagus nerves or phrenic nerves, which serve the diaphragm muscle. Factors that may cause damage or irritation to these nerves include: A hair or something else in your ear touching your eardrum A tumor, cyst or goiter in your neck"

Friend, you just helped me out big time! I had a lumbar epidural for my spine pain earlier today, and this evening I came down with a case of the hiccups that wouldn’t go away for hours on end. It’s a common side-effect to the injection, and it was driving me mad because I couldn’t sleep (it was too late to call my doc for help). I tried over a dozen KZbin remedies over and over again (even my own typical hiccup cure had zero effect), even combining a few of them. I would’ve looked insane to anyone who saw me 😅. I finally stumbled across your comment here on Dr Berg’s video, and your technique was the ONLY one that stopped the onslaught of hiccups. Thank you to the moon and back, and I hope others who are suffering can find your comment! 🙌

Drinking water upside down ALWAYS works for me because you are supposed to place your diaphragm right over the edge of the bed so you are stretching it out to stop the spasm. Hold as much water in your mouth as possible, keep it in your mouth, flip over onto a bed or couch with your diaphragm right over the edge, take small gulps of the water, take 4 or 5 more gulps once the water is done, then just breathe. Flip over and no hiccups

thank you for this, I suffered hiccuping fits for a few years after my car accident but maybe a different kind of one, caused by trauma. they were very loud long deep and would last more than a 24 hour window, cause me to lose my voice and my throat would close..my neighbors could hear they were so loud.. I did get trauma to my ribcage and could feel vibration and snapping around my diaphram also it affected my heart, there was an issue there and gurgling.. My GP said the only time he ever saw those to be after major heart surgeries, they put me on high dose of baclofen.. so happy to be over those days.

You can also "think off" hiccups if you know how. It's almost like a meditative state. Once you pass the period when a hiccup was due, you can feel a slight anxious buildup in your chest. If you stay focused (holding your breath may help but best you just STOP breathing, not HOLD it which is done by locking. If you lock your breath shut you won't be relaxed). It varies but usually if you pass that hiccup when it was due and stay relaxed and focused, it'll go away in about 2 mins. Sometimes if you go right back to eating or drinking it'll restart. Like I said you can usually "feel" when you're clear to go back to normal. The quicker the hiccups the harder this method usually is to succeed with but I've done it for years. Now at about a 75% success rate.

I can stop hiccups. I have done this to many people and can only remember one that was a "tough case". How? Do this: Get the person to sit right in front of you. No laughing, giggling or talking. Tell them to STARE into your eyes as you stare into theirs. Tell them to look at nothing but into your eyes. Tell them to hold this position for at least 30-60 seconds. Then ask them to hiccup. They cannot! It really, really works! People have thought I was some sort of hiccup magic maker by doing this. I don't know why it works but it does in most all cases.

Dr. Berg, I have R-CPD (inability to burp for others reading), and my hiccups usually occurs when I intake excessive carbonated beverages. At one point, my hiccups have lasted for over a month without pause. Are my hiccups also likely to be related to the CO2/O2 disassociation curve or would it be necessary to take treatment to train my ability to burp? - It is worth noting that during the month of where the hiccups persisted, I do believe I had excessive levels of stress which would have affected my O2 intake.

If you get hiccups - Push on your forehead, right above your eyebrows for about 20 seconds.(There’s a vein there that blocking it seems to help.) I saw that on ‘untold stories of the ER’ a long time ago & it really works!!

I exhale as much as possible, then hold as long as possible, even through the hiccups. I take my next breath slowly and in control, no gasping. Repeat once or twice. Always works for me.

Same. The key is to really push on how long you hold your breath. Just holding it until it's mildly uncomfortable doesn't work.

I have not had the hiccups in 30 years because I learned how to relax my diaphragm. It will instantly stop the hiccups. I've tried the breathing into a bag when I was young and it never worked. How do you relax your diaphragm? Ever get that sick, sinking feeling in your stomach? That's they way you relax your diaphragm. Try to do this for your first hiccup and they'll stop instantly.

Thanks for this. I can share this with my colleague who suffers from frequent hiccupping. I also watched your video on panic attacks. I used to get those - badly! - and I see why my desperate (self-taught) method worked.

This works for me every time, and my friend finally tried it after saying these things never work and it worked for him too. I used to get hiccups at work daily and did this everyday and everyday it worked. Drink a cup of water while holding your nose shut so you can't breath. Chug it until you can't. Keep holding nose shut and breathe out mouth a few times after chugging. They gone

I am 63 years old. I did not learn the following from a family member. This was something I picked up somewhere as a young adult. I take a spoonful of sugar or a restaurant sugar packet and let it dissolve in my mouth. It has always worked for me. It has been so long since I have had hiccups, I don't remember if I have ever had to repeat the process in order to get rid of the hiccups. Anyway, the hiccups do not return. Over the years, I have told others about this cure and it usually works for them. Obviously, if you have a medical reason where you can't do this, you shouldn't.

I found the breathing very slowly method by myself when I was a kid. For it to work, I had to be very concentrated on the sensation of the air in order to work fast. I thought I was really smart back then :D Now I know why it works!

I rarely had this problem but when I did I found that I could rapidly pat my upper chest while letting my breath out stopped it. I had a girl friend that would develop hiccups after laughing a lot. For some reason she wouldn't let me use the technique on her, so I tried a vigorous, rapid but not painful patting on the back over the lung area for half a minute or so. No more hiccups. This worked for her every time. Over the years I used this on many people with 100% success.

The left ear lobe is a pressure point connected to the stomach. Holding the bottom of the left ear lobe between thumb and pointer finger and then firmly pressing and massaging the lobe will 9 times out of 10, bring instant relief.

I take in a deep breath and slowly swallow 3 times. This calms the esophagus, ridding the hiccups, caused by the esophagus being disrupted. Usually by eating or drinking too fast.

When I had hiccups, and when I would breathe in slowly, I would notice various places where I had the sensation of needing to cough. To resist coughing, I slowed down even further in those places. Once I finished getting my lungs full after about 15 to 20 seconds, my hiccups were gone. This works consistently. What's strange though is that the urges to cough are always in the same places.

I found something that works every time to stop my hiccups. Take a deep breath and hold it, take a sip of water then blow out a little air. Repeat this until you have released the whole breath. Do not breath in during this process. You will feel a little air bubble release and the hiccups are gone . I have shared this with everyone I see with hiccups and it has worked for them.

Saw an old remedy discovered by a doctor's maid. She would take the handle end of a spoon and in front of a mirror reach the handle in to the back of the throat and use it to lift the "goozle" that hangs down and hold it there for a few moments. Don't touch anything else or you'll gag. Works 99% of the time.

I found a 2-seconds ready method...that also tastes good 🙂 take a teaspoon of sugar. Add fresh lemon drops on it (lemon must completely soak the sugar). Take a big breath and eat it all at once. done! It took me longer to write this than it takes to do it. Sometimes, when the hiccup is really strong, one might need to take two teaspoons. I read it somewhere ages ago....I used it all my life, and use it on my daughter too, passing the knowledge through generations 😅 You're welcome.
