Thanks for help by producing this video. We had purchased a rather expensive king size bed and 12 in. memory foam mattress. I tried to get use to it but never could sleep well on it. We decided that the problem was not the mattress but that with my back issues I would need a adjustable type bed. We decided on purchasing a set of single adjustable beds and dropping them into the gutted frame of our King size. The idea of cutting our foam mattress came to me after pricing new and realizing that selling the king would be difficult. After watching your video I had the confidence to do the same. We saved about $1500.00 and the results could not have been better. Our new adjustable twins fit perfectly into the beautiful wood headboard and frame. And the King size mattress ,when cut in half, fits perfectly also. Anyone considering a similar project can be reassured that it is easy as you make it in your video.

Thanks for this. It's exactly what we are looking at doing. Funnily enough, it was the sales lady in the shop who suggested cutting our existing memory foam mattress in half instead of buying new. She also said the twin adjustable bases would fit in our existing king size timber frame after the slats are taken out, and you have confirmed this.

I had this same problem and came to the same conclusion. But it took your video to prove its not a crazy idea to my family. So thank you for making this video and validating my plan. I’m gonna make one twin and a dog bed for my large bread dog. I’m also going to order a actual zip cover from temper And most importantly it’s not going to a landfill. recycling, repurposing and New beds from my household. It’s a win all the way around.

You are sure welcome. I actually found it on youtube as well and wanted to show "more" detail of how I would have liked to have seen the mattress cut. Just remember to keep a fitted sheet on it at all times as if you sit on it or even try to move it around without that outer casing / fabric, it can tear/rip the foam. John. Thanks for the comment.. if you do video your procedure, post a link to it here as well.

John Fraser Hi, John. I scavenged a roll of foam that has a consistency similar to that of memory foam. It's about an inch thick and I was able to cut it effectively with heavy duty scissors. If I had gone with the memory foam mattress I would have used the knife like you used.

Is just like to say.... The reason I was watching your vid was because after a year or so my 4" memory topper became less squishy in the middle, but the sides where fine. So I nervously cut it down the centre and flipped the two outter edges together in the middle, placed them back the cover and prayed they would stay together. It's been almost a week and it still holding fast as if I glued them. Even becoming more settled and I can hardly feel any joining line. Before I had to pull it back into place, but it seems to stay inplace. As I said I was very nervous doing this but it worked out perfectly and has given me another year or two of gorgeous slumber before I need to purchase a new one. Thanks to your informative and funny vid 😀👍

i have a huge amount of respect for you for the fact that you chose to give your kids an AWESOME mattress instead of making $700. not many kids get things like that. but youre not over spoiling them by buying them brand new ones. but why were you getting rid of it??
@JohnFraserPhotographer9 жыл бұрын
+ashley dubrey, hey Ashley. Ok... long story. The kids were getting heavier, my 17 year old is about 150 lbs, and 6'4" so the XL is necessary. All of the twin mattresses I had over the years I had given to me used. Starting over then as a single dad. You know... oh here I have a bunk bed frame, can you use that... why yes! Then I just found mattresses at Goodwill store(s) and used them. As they got heavier having uneven or open slats under the mattress caused anyone sleeping on them to wake up with numb, arms, or legs or back aches. I inherited this mattress from my last wife's relatives - and that was about 10 years old. Still in pretty good condition. All of my back aches went away. But horrible for sex... no springy action :) ... fast forward. New wife is organic, eating healthy etc... I did some commercials for Mountain Air Organic Beds in Springdale, AR... and through watching hours of footage and editing the videos (you can youtube "mountain air organic beds" and you can see the videos. But I learned that most / all furniture and especially beds have - fire-retardants around the mattresses and foam. These fire-retardants were outlawed in children's pajamas in the early 70's for causing cancer / and having been labeled a carcinogenic material. Called Chlorinated TRIS, is kind of crazy that so many people are having allergic reactions, auto immune ailments etc... in their later years... and I believe its because of all this crap.. chemical toxins big corporations have figured out a way to get rid of WW2 overstock chemicals. Now the norm---- is a Billion dollar business. We just got a completely organic King 100% latex rubber mattress from Mountain Air in Springdale and are enjoying removing one more toxin source from our lives. Hope that helps. Here is our channel, you can find the 13 commercials there: kzbin.infovideos

Thanks for the video! Until now I had actually forgotten that there were TWO box springs under my Cal King mattress which works out great! A dust ruffle covers them so I haven't seen them for a while. I have the Tempurpedic Rhapsody bed that's too large so I was shopping online tonight for a Queen when I saw your video title and clicked on it. I was going to take the box spring..now box springs...down with a bunch of donated items to the victims of the horrible fires were are still having here in N.Cal. I'm only 1.5 hours from the area. People are coming from all over with trucks full of stuff and we are heading down Sunday. At first they were requesting air mattress's and cots because people were sleeping on blankets on the floor. They have been asking for air mattress's until some arrived and cots as well. I figured that they could use one their bedding with the big box spring . I was just going to cut up the foam and make thinks with it. Like cushions for my lawn furniture. Stick small flat pieces in my shoes...Hey it works! I did it with a mattress topper that I was throwing away. I'm going to do just what was done here then when I make my donation run on Sunday I will take 2 beds down too. What a nice surprise that will be for someone who has lost their beds..their whole home! Two nice Tempurpedic beds. This bed is the Rhapsody model so it may be a bit more difficult to cut through with all the layers. Two think layers of egg crate type foam at the bottom and more layers softening as they go up. I'll use a serrated knife. :-) Thanks again for the idea.

If I were you and you're going to use the foam mattress in a camper, we're currently in "extended camping" mode i.e. we got some land and are building an off grid home, while living in a camper. If you plan to live in the camper during the winter, you'll have serious condensation issues using a foam mattress UNLESS you can insulate around the perimeter of the walls if the mattress touches the walls in any way, and make sure you have some slats below the mattress or it will retain moisture -- and cause a serious mold / and dangerous health condition. any idea how to do this with other mattress types? i have a really old mattress... it was at my bfs grandmothers... and was never used... but its old.. sat in a room on a bed for forever. but im going to be renovating my daughters room. girling it up and making it into a room fit for now and when shes older.. and i need a lot of bedspace because my sister has 4 kids and they stay the night sometimes. so i thought i would build a bunk bed. and the bottom... would be a couch made out the two halves of the large old mattress i have. and possibly stick a trundle bed under the couch.. and the back of the couch is removable for another bed space.

+Jennifer Sharum You know... I dont have an answer for you on this question. I'm sorry.
@lindadickson15027 жыл бұрын
If it is really old, it probably isn't a foam mattress. A regular mattress with coils couldn't be cut down. I think you would also have a mess just opening it up.

Idk why I watched this lol I'm supposed to be looking for a mattress to buy! I have a sleep number that I can't wait to get rid of! Didn't like it from the start because of premature sagging in the pillow top and middle layer of memory foam. We'll prolly keep the air mattresses which are like a strong camping mattress. They were losing air through the pump after only 8 months. That was about 6 years ago so now we've had enough! It was too expensive to buy a new one right away and the parts were still over priced even at the depreciated price. We had purchased the 2nd best model at that time too, almost 4k. We'll keep the memory foam, roll it up and use it for my kids basement sleepover parties! I'm sure even with the sag, their friends will appreciate it better than the carpeting. Hey If it's still good, in a couple years I'll give it to them to top their college dorm beds. (You too! Why not, stuffs expensive!) What kind of bed did you replace yours with? I'm looking at the Saatva. Good reviews and if it doesn't work out, we've got 75 days to return, plus you can't beat the $1,300 price for a king. 👍

I have a generic memory foam mattress that I want to cut into four pieces to make beds for my elderly dog. I have a similar knife but it is not cutting as easily. What else would you recomend to cut with?
@JohnFraserPhotographer9 жыл бұрын
+Malinda Smith You might try sharpening the knife with a stone sharpener or take it somewhere to get the blade sharpened. That will give you the cleanest cut and less fraying. Good luck!
@JohnFraserPhotographer8 жыл бұрын
+Malinda Smith You could rent a foam cutter from a fabric store or hardware rental store. Looks like an electric turkey cutter, but it has a flat metal plate on the bottom (to keep it straight in all directions).

I know this is an old post from you,but others might recently see it. The best knives for carving things like foam..bread...turkeys, are serrated knives that are sharp. Even serrated electric knives will do.I took a nice square dog bed and added some memory foam to it and my dog loved it.If you have any extra foam. It's nice to cut into smaller pieces to tuck into your shoes. Your feet will love you for it!

You sir are a genius. We have a california king tempurpedic that I hate. This would make it so much easier to move around and ultimately dispose of. One question: Are the two halves much bigger than 2 twin beds? Will twin size bedding fit I wonder? Great video. Thanks.
@JohnFraserPhotographer7 жыл бұрын
The two halves XL are EXACTLY the size of Twin XL. My youngest at the time was around 6', he's now 6'5" so when I made this video, it extended the time before we needed to buy a new mattress. We noticed the kids having issues when they hit their mid teens and their arms/legs would get numb on those cheap, mattresses, I threw out the mattress, and just put the Twin XL (I made) on the box spring and it worked like a charm. We had to keep a fitted sheet over it to keep the foam from tearing which it did some during changing sheets... but it worked for a few more years till we moved.

austin grubbs , the kids love their beds. They were getting into the teen years, and hit over 100lbs, and they would wake up with numb arms or legs on the spring cheapo mattress... they've not had any issues since they've been using the new cut mattresses.

great vid. I'm happy for the kids to have a thinking Dad. so now they get a great bed with out extra cost of a new one. hey it's new to them, right?!?! oops! loved that!
@JohnFraserPhotographer7 жыл бұрын
Yes. They loved the beds --- and it kept from having to buy new beds till they 17 and 15. So I got about 3 -4 more years out of them. Thanks for commenting! Thanks for the kudos.

John Fraser Use the memory foam layer to put on top of their college dorm mattresses. Those dorm beds are extra long so the size should work out well.

We ended up splitting the tempurpedic in half and both boys got 1 of the 2 halves. Kelly my wife and I ended up doing a deal on a natural rubber mattress. i was doing a number of Educational Videos for Mountain Air Organic Beds in Sprindgale AR, and after doing the videography-- I learned a bunch of great information about off-gassing, and the toxic materials used in various mattresses and all Foam Mattresses. My wife is super sensitive just about everything (including me!). Long story short we ended buying the rubber mattress and it's been wonderful. We were able to mix match the interior 3 layers from soft/medium/firm and put them different orders to create a different "feel". Their mattresses come individually, and we put them together zip up the mattress cover and it looks like one king mattress.

Just to throw this out there (I'm speaking from the prospective of someone who owns two custom mattress companies)...that shiny material that you initially removed and put on the floor is an FR Sock that Tempur (and many other mattress manufacturers...with our products, we laminate an FR fabric to the back of the mattress cover instead of using an FR sock) use in order to pass CFR1633 federal flammability standards. Without the fire barrier over the foam, both the visco and the poly foam are extremely flammable. Especially with the high foam densities Tempur uses in their beds. If possible, have your wife try to re-use that material to sew two separate socks to put over those foam cores. The materials is usually pretty stretchy so you might have enough to cover both cores. If you threw the sock out, I'd make sure you have nothing flammable or potentially flammable near those foam cores in your kid's bedrooms. That includes lamps that could be knocked over on to the mattress, candles, lighters, anything hot, etc. Even static has been known to catch visco and poly foam on fire. Just search youtube for CFR1633 and you can see how quickly a mattress catches on fire WITH a burn cover. It's much faster without one!
@JohnFraserPhotographer9 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Prichard Hey Thanks Johnathan! That is good to know. Unfortunately that material is long gone. And we are switching over to 100% organic latex rubber mattress with no chlorinated tris as to minimize toxic carcinogenic flame retardants being inhaled especially from foam mattresses and our upholstery / sofas etc.
@jonathanprichard29089 жыл бұрын
+John Fraser that's the way to go if you can afford it. Go with a product that uses a wool FR barrier (I don't offer this yet but others companies do) and certified organic cotton. Make sure to ask if the latex is truly 100% natural as many options are blended (60% natural and 40% polyurethane but sometimes less) to save on cost. Make sure the entire core is latex. Many products out there have latex on top with an all poly base (very common with the big name S brands). That's a perfectly comfortable and affordable (though sometimes they charge as if its all latex which is a rip off) option but it won't be nearly as durable, eco-friendly, or chemical free. Good luck!

Thanks for the "education" very informative. Yes we just did some bartering on web services and videography and are trading out a King 100% certified Organic Latex Mattress, custom box spring, 100% wool organic mattress topper, and a whole bunch of non-toxic materials... I did 11 infomercials that I posted on my youtube channel - look for Mountain Air Organic Beds, and If I can help you in any way let me know. kzbin.infovideos

Since it's 4 pieces of foam stacked on top of one another, was the fitted sheet enough to keep the pieces in place or did you glue them together?
@JohnFraserPhotographer7 жыл бұрын
all the layers are glued together. The only place they came apart slightly was on the outside layer and the 2nd layer down. After I put a fitted sheet on them (and kept) them on they foam stayed in place no problems. When the Kids did their laundry... and laid on the foam by itself... they tore some of the foam at the edges. So Keeping a 2nd fitted sheet handy to cover the first when when removed for laundry should make them last.
