In todays demonstration I describe how to cut a metric pitch thread up to a shoulder on an old Atlas lathe with no reverse spindle and an 8 teeth per inch lead screw. Included is how to select and set the manual change gears how to maintain the thread position even when disconnecting the half nuts using a threading dial.
Here is a link to the parts manual for this lathe. The full thread cutting chart is at the end. This is also a great site. Lots of useful stuff here.

G'day Dave, stumbled on your channel and love it mate, just subbed 👍 I have the same Atlas and I'm head over heals with it, I've got a full set of change gears and use it for 99% of my single point threading, its a lovely bit of kit

Fantastic. I’m a Fitter and Turner from the 80’s so old school machinists taught me. Let me know if you have any questions. I love making old tools work again. Mine was mostly complete but so dirty it wouldn’t move. I’ve found a face plate and a milling attachment for it. I try and make replacement parts when possible. Thanks for saying Hi 🤠

Gday Dave, Just found your channel and subscribed 464th. First time ive seen anybody thread reo. Excellent demo of using change wheels & disengaging half nuts without losing sync with leadscrew. Is it possible to do a close up shot of the rest of your Atlas treading chart next video please? If your electric motor is old, it maybe be possible to to electrically reverse it. It was routine for older motors to be reversible. You'll have to peek in the connection box and addition wiring to a switch will be required of course. Looking forward to next video. Greg

Hi Greg, You have to love Google (most of the time) This parts list has the full threading chart on the last page. vintagemachinery.org/pubs/51/27371.pdf I think I’ll print it out for myself as the one in the cover is difficult to read. I have seen slightly different versions of this chart around. Some have different gears for the feed and some have one extra position on the banjo. This one should be a great start for you. I have thought about reversing the motor and yes it is a very old motor. In my previous video on using back gears I set it to the fastest speed and while it was winding up I could smell the magic smoke so I may have to fiddle with the motor at some stage. I’ll also need to update the switch. As you probably know it has a screw on chuck so doing any matching in reverse if asking for trouble. My crank handle is surprisingly effective. I’m actually making a fire poker so the re-bar will blend right in. The nut just holds the handle on and I needed an excuse to make a metric thread for the video 🤠 Thanks for subscribing! Slowly crawling towards 1000!

@@DavoShed Thanks Dave this document is exactly what I was after. All my searches found a different model Atlas. The start winding in a single phase induction motor is usually a much smaller gauge wire and is not meant to be in circuit very long, a second or two. If the motor is slow to start or the centrifical switch is sticky (open framed ventilated motors often get gummed up full of shite) the start winding maybe getting warm! I go back to watch your version videos. All the best.

Looking at those numbers, most of it could be expressed in hexadecimal, an then perhaps annualised by the 52 tooth gear And the 32 tooth gear So you could be on to something if you would are looking to convert teeth per inch into metric time. I wonder if that’s how the Tardis works

Yes, that’s how the Tardis Works! I try not to think in hexadecimal. That was my last job 😬
