Thanks. That was more useful that other internet instructions. My daughters will follow this using Canada Geese feathers. However we will not remove the barbs, as the reason to use a quill pen IS to have the barbs bothering your face and everything else.

He forgot to mention you need to heat up the feather shaft with hot sand to harden it.

@@serenitymindspace they're cheap, readily available, and relatively tough. Historically, geese of various types and turkey feathers are the most popular source for quills.

going to attempt this on a very small but beautiful feather found in the PNW (not sure what kind of bird but its yellow and green). guessing this will be more difficult due to the size!

Would have liked to see you write with this pen. I just got a bunch of plastic feathers in the mail and they are junk to make quills with it seems. to hard to cut, whoops >.

But... But the natural flaky feathery feather hair that gets into your face IS the whole reason anyone would want an actual feather quill! I aint braking off my expensive emu feather in half and cutting it bold, its a memory souvenir!

Greetings, i've always called the "guts of the thing" the "marrow" of the shaft. No idea if it is correct but that is what I use. And another thing, strip the fletching/barbs/vanes and give them to an archer friend. Some terms: FEATHER TERMS AND ILLUSTRATIONS . www.fws.gov/lab/featheratlas/glossary.php. Dude you butchered that thing lol. Leave the last bit on the top, looks nice. I wound up sanding the “squared” edges after removing the barbs and very lightly oiled when done. Looks great!

The narrator has a fine command of the English language, whilst carving a feather quill pen, but this certainly isn't the best demonstration I've seen. So having produced this historical writing tool, you then butcher away all the feathers to avoid tickling to the face. Why don't you just use a Bic pen instead? You didn't even write any calligraphy.
@ASentientPlant4 жыл бұрын
LOL Removing the feathers IS historically accurate. Why don't you comment something encouraging somewhere else instead of being an ass?
