How to Cut an Attic Door Over Garage for Storage

Adding overhead attic storage to my garage by cutting my own access. I only cut it to 36 inches instead of 54 inch standard for pull down attic ladders. The width was standard between 24 inch framing.

Yea added that extra junk space above is key to reduce clutter. Much easier than my second floor with the blow in insulation. I built a elevated deck between the joists but the second floor is hot and itchy due to insulation.

You saw I cut a smaller hole. But if you plan to install a pull down ladder, it needs to be longer since the ladders are all standard size at HD and Lowes.

Yea I have AC. There a video from a year ago where I did the minisplit. This was only side not insulated. The 2 car portion is insulated since there is a second floor above. The 3rd car part is separate with a roof over it.

Also after a year of using the space, I should have did it 54” and put a pull down ladder, but not a big deal as it’s low and my A frame ladder is about 5’ away to use. But the convenience may have been worth $200 ladder.

Definitely add some plywood between the framing so you can walk on it and store boxes. My old house had high roof above the garage so I was able to stand up above and stored all my junk and Xmas boxes up there.

I hope i am wrong but the insulation you added should have been with the barrier towards the garage and fibers towards the plywood. That would reduce the heat in the garage. wouldnt that allow the heat to get into the ac room and the cold air to escape into the attic faster?

The batt insulation still works the same. The paper helps to handle it and roll it.

The faced side should always face the heated side. It’s a vapor barrier, moisture from humid inside air can condense and become trapped in the insulation during cold winter months. This can lead to rot and mold. But if it doesn’t get cold where you are then you should be ok. The paper faced insulation isn’t for making it easier to handle, it’s a vapor barrier.
