How to CUT an OBJECT with another OBJECT in Blender - Boolean modifier

In this video we see how to make Holes in Blender, using the "Boolean" modifier in "Difference" mode. Using an auxiliary piece we can make a hole with any shape, in this case we cut a cube using a cylinder.

Do you have any suggestions on any videos that can show me a more stream lined way to isolate certain objects to slice/cut away from other objects. I've gotten pretty good with the modifier in this video, but I'm now working on a project with gears. And when I import the stl. It has multiple gears where the teeth are right next to each other. So I've been using basic shapes to slice/cut away gears from other gears, but it takes 20+ separate shapes to fully slice all of it from the other object. mmm I suggest you get use with several shortcuts that can help you to easily select parts of the mesh and do tons of stuff. One important thing you need to understand about shortcuts in blender is that the shortcuts are context sensitive, it means that is important in which window you have the mouse cursor when using a shortcut, also which working mode you are currently using (for example Object mode or Edit Mode) and also which task are you performing at the moment of using the shortcut. An example of this last thing is the G shortcut, if you have an object selected and you press G, you are gonna grab the object and move it in space with mouse cursor, but if at that time you press X, then you are gonna constrain the movement of the object to the X axis of the world (if you are working with global coordinates) and then if you press the number 1, you are gonna move the object in the x-axis 1 unit in the positive direction. Now if you press the minus sign from the numpad, the 1 unit movement would be in the negative direction of the x-axis. But if you are in Edit Mode and select a vertex, edge or faces and perform all the previous task, you will be doing the action with selected geometry (movement and so). So shortcuts can speed up your work dramatically if you practice a lot. A useful shortcut is for example ALT+ Left Click on edge, this works in Edit mode and allows you to easily select edge loops, as shown in this video on how to create and remove edge loops: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKXZq5mdf615nKM Another useful shortcut is, while you have vertices, edges or faces selected and press CTRL + (Plus sign from numepad), this extent the selection to the neighbor geometry, very useful to quickly select parts of geometry. I think I don't have a video about this yet. CTRL+R is also useful to create new edge loops and add geometry to work with, you can check this video for this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnmnfpJ6pKqCm5o The shortcuts H, SHIFT+H and ALT+H also super useful to hide and unhide objects while you are in object and hide and unhide geometry while you are in edit mode (another example of the importance of the context in which you are working at the moment of using the shortcut). It doesnt show in the edit mode, so you have to go back to the object mode. That solved it for me

@@ksenkuu he forgot to mention you have to APPLY the Boolean you can do that by collaps the pulldown of the boolean modifier, make sure its selected and press ctrl+A of CMD+A on mac. Otherwise it will do nothing at all.

I've struggled with this for days. Just have a 3d image already completed of a squirrel with an acorn in its mouth. I want to cut the acorn out so it can be printed in different color on the 3d printer. The boolean modifier keeps messing up, it never works right, even with the "Hole Tolerant" checked. yes, you need to go to the Outliner window and disable the camera icon on the object you don't want to render. The outliner window is where all the objects of your scene are listed

Everytime I delete the cylinder the hole fills back up and when I go into edit mode I cant see the vertexes inside the object

that's because you need to apply the modifier on the object before deleting the cutting object, in my case I don't delete the cylinder but hide it pression H. In recent versions of Blender there is a down arrow in the boolean modifier, click it and there is the option to apply the modifier. Once you apply it the cut will become part of the mesh.

Hey! One thing you can do is to "apply the boolean modifier", for that, in the modifier element, click on the down arrow and then "apply". Once you do that you can remove the cylinder and the hole should persist

I suggest that you join all the objects you want to use to cut and then select that object as a whole in the boolean modifier. To join several objects into one, just select them in the object mode and press CTRL+J. The boolean modifier has different operation modes, you need to choose the appropriate mode, I think the mode is called "Difference", but don't remember quite well. I mention it in the video

mmm not much, it could be the mode of the boolean modifier, maybe you have it in "Union", you need to set it in "Difference" mode. It also could be that you turn off the modifier for some reason, the screen icon in the top part of the boolean modifier. Maybe you add the modifier to the other object, you need to add it to the proper object, the one that is gonna receive the cuts. There are not many other possibilities, maybe you could try it in a new Blender file, apply the modifier to the default cube and make it work, then, once you understand how it works, you apply it on your scene.

This cant be done with compkex custom shapes. The image of the star you used isnt true. You can only use primitive shapes like the ones blender gives you at start.
