Can you use 2 pieces of 48" of 4x4 sandwiched together like this -II- and a sledge hammer to hammer a full length 8" pipe into the hub? Or will the wood just absorb the blow and now push the pipe in? Anyone try this before?

Yes, it will work so long as you keep the pipe level with the fitting. You have to be sure that the fitting is secure and will not move as you pound the pipe into place by bracing the back of it with some wood scraps or something similar. The best thing to use as a buffer is a square piece of 2 x 12 or several layers of 3/4" plywood that totally covers the pipe so that the specific impulse of each blow is distributed across the entire pipe surface. Needless to say, everything has to be done quickly. The solvent for PVC pipe cement is acetone and the stuff evaporates like nobody's business. The cement will start to set up in about 45 seconds. (less on hot dry days.)

I bought a 90degree elbow for my 6 inch pipe. The outside diameter of the pipe and the elbow are the same (about 6.6 inches) so it can't slide on. Is there different sizes of fittings?

To me, it sounds like you might have bought a SCH30 (thin wall) elbow for a SCH40 pipe
