Although I am not a professional, I have successfully cut down trees that are at least 2 feet in diameter with a handsaw and some work gloves. Usually, I go with a different shape of wedge and I am almost always cutting trees at an angle. that being said, this is definitely a useful video for beginners and there is a lot of great information.

One thing I do, to ensure I am not injured in case the trunk decides to splinter, is I wrap the trunk, above where the cut is, with a tow strap. Tow straps are inexpensive, $20 or less, which is real cheap insurance, in case the trunk does decide to splinter. Yep, it takes a couple more minutes but it could save weeks in a hospital and thousands of dollars in medical costs.

Ive been cutting trees down for about 6 months now, i know that doesn’t sound like experience but I’m usually at it 5-6 hours at a time, I never cut the face cut like that. I usually go in the width of the bar then for the top cut starting a few inches higher nothing like how high they did in this video. & the back cut, 2 inches above from the face cut & I go all the way till the tree starts to fall, I don’t see the need of wedges when you can just cut 85% through the tree & it’ll fall
@mpp917
@mpp917 4 жыл бұрын
you use wedges because the tree may sit back while performing the back cut, then you will be stuck and have to take the power head off and call a buddy in shame to come help. Or you will have to muscle the the tree over, which doesnt always work. use wedges. felling trees is serious business and far too many people take it lightly.

@@brianbaker359 yeah it can chip them. But a rubber mallet would be better if u were worried about that. On many trees a wedge would not have enough mass to drive wedges aswell. I think it's not near as good as an axe but it might work on small trees.

I'm a logger from Northern CA and we use "Humboldt" undercuts here so as to minimize wood waste on the butt log. But for a homeowner/amateur these instructions are fine. The only thing I would add is for the undercut I personally do the horizontal cut first then the angled cut as I find it's easier to aim the direction of fall and the cuts seem to line up more accurately than doing the angle cut first. Everyone is different but most guys I've seen do the horizontal cut first.
