Template is a good idea. I am installing an HVAC system in an 1855 home and need to install the registers in the floor. Very helpful.

I disagree of placement of supply grilles. Should be 6" out from rough wall, and center of window, and supply should never be on an interior wall, returns should be on interior walls only. Size of the register and round duct is determined by doing manual j, and other duct sizing. You could get away with an 8" instead of 2 - 6" round boots. Depending on the cfm for the room. Are you putting returns in every room except bathrms and kitchen area? Or one central air return but if you do one central air return that duct will big and will need framing. Love your feed back on this thanks for the video. You can cut flr gilles in with a 4" circular saw too, quick n fast.

Generally the vents were placed under the windows and in close proximity to entrances.... 🙂

Correct. Room space is not insulation. Send the heat/AC where it is needed.

In general you want the vent to be as far away from the door as possible if you have a single return in the house. The house I bought has a room with 2 old windows and the duct is right next to the door. All the cool air gets sucked right out the door be the return register which is also right by the door. I can only assume this was something done by the prior owner because no one who understand how AC works would do this. I have to have a fan under the air vent to blow the cool air into the rest of the room. When I get done with the million other repairs needed in this house, I will be moving the duct to the corner between the two windows.

if the round duct is 4" - i think it's better to use a 3x10 to 3.5x10 to keep the velocity up. even if 5", 3 to 3.5 x 10 could be better. it's important when doing a/c with floor registers to have good throw so the air mixes and doesn't just sink to the floor.

Half the floor vents in my in-laws house have broken covers. Anything larger than 4x10s are just asking for more trouble.

Also tape the duct joint with the floor from the top side. You'd be shocked at how much air leakage there is.

Tape falls off. Use duct sealer.

Don't ask me how or why (I do not know) but I shot a raccoon in my furnace duct and pulled her out through the floor vent. There are no leaks in my duct work, so I just don't know how.

How about extending it up the wall, have a lower register ( open for heating) and an upper register ( open for A/C)?? Box it in to look like a support column, or inset it into the wall. I feel it would need to be spray foamed behind it if it was inset to prevent sweating and rotting out the outside plywood/osb!! Talked to many HVAC guys but nobody wants to try it

Too much cutting to install.Crappy airflow when completed. I've done as the customer requested. Floor vents are perfectly fine. Just watch out for furniture placement that would cover the vent.

NEVER put registers in the floor if you have a choice. Dirt and crud will continually fall into them. They are never strong enough for foot traffic and will eventually break and cave in. Put them low in your walls if possible.

You mean to say you don't have to put vents by windows seems the heat you bought is going straight out of your drafty windows that your brother in law installed? I notice your vents are by windows and doors??? isn't it much wiser to put them as far away from a window or door? Or did I miss that just wondering is it a man thing? it's just done that way???

@@ziggyustar3137Because that is going to be the coldest spot in the room. You heat that and it will keep the room warm. If you don't it will always be cold next to the window. Even modern windows don't compare to a solid wall with insulation. This is really the only place the vents should be and is common knowledge among people who do HVAC installs. Anyone who tells you different should be fired.

@@MAGAMAN It might be the coldest spot but it's not always the best spot. In bedrooms people put their beds at the window so they can have a breeze when sleeping. You also don't want heat under your bed. Another reason is if there were two windows on a wall. You center the duct for the wall regardless of there being two windows. If you ask people if they were happy with where their registers were placed, I would bet 75% of them would disagree with the placement of them.
