www.VideoJoeKnows.com How to cut sheet metal galvanized flashing is easy...when you know how. Joe has a
little roof leak he needs to repair & he's going to be using some galvanized sheet metal flashing he purchased at
his local hardware store in order to make the needed roof repairs. What kind of shear cutters is Joe going to be
using to cut the sheet metal flashing....or is Joe going to be using a different kind of cutters something like
tin snips. I've heard of them but I've never used them before plus I've seen tin snips with red handles & some
had green handles & some even had yellow handles. Not sure if that means anything or not, when it comes time to
cutting galvanized sheet metal flashing. Maybe Joe will tell about this when he shows us how to cut the flashing.
I sure hope so.....

Thank you for sharing this video Joe. I am planning to use a piece of sheet metal like this, to put behind a large frame. I plan to give it to my sister, so she can put all her refrigerator magnets, as she has traveled all 50 States and about 30 countries., and has a huge collection of them. Do you think those magnets will stick to the sheet metal? This is why I came to your channel on cutting the sheet metal, which is very helpful, by the way. Thank you and be safe. Greetings from Houston, TX.

Yes magnets will stick to galvanized sheet metal. Good luck & be careful when you cut it. You know The Home Depot has this sheet metal in different small pieces you can buy & you might find a size just the right size for you without having to cut but chances are you will need to cut it....thanks again for stopping by! I also have another video that will show you how to cut the sheetmetal too. I think you would have to go to my main KZbin page then click on playlists & scroll down to hvac & it might be in there...not sure where I put it now!...but I installed the sheet metal in an attic area next to the existing hvac unit so that's why I think I might have put it in there. If the sheetmetal piece you get has a little grease on it then you can clean that with white vinegar. Let me know how it goes & thanks again for stopping by!

Joe: *Cuts perfectly straight* They're made for cutting curves and the yellow handle is made for cutting straight. Me: *Having never used tin snips or sheet metal* .....Perhaps i should try the yellow first 😅

Get yourself a pair of stubai pelican snips those are the right tool for cutting long straight clean lines but for a handyman it's a pricey tool to have just for straight cuts

You would use a drill to start a hole and cut out from there.
@VideoJoeKnows
@VideoJoeKnows 9 ай бұрын
Hmmmmm yes drill a hole then bend it enough with a screwdriver or something to then get the red handle tin snips in there to start slicing away. Or you could put the sheetmetal on a piece of wood like a 2x4 scrap then take a screw driver sideways & hammer on it or a dull chisel take the side of it at an angle to pierce the sheetmetal a couple of times then wedge with screw driver to get your tin snips in there. See what I mean?

i need to cut sheet metal about 5mm thick will metal shears be enough ?
@Rainaman-
@Rainaman- 7 жыл бұрын
Will be too late, but short answer - no. Shears are usually made up to 1.5mm thickness. I even struggle to cut 1mm sheet with a good pair. You can use jigsaw with metal cutting blade, just oil it.
@melgross
@melgross 6 жыл бұрын
5mm isn’t sheet metal, it’s plate. You need a heavy duty nibbler for that, or a plate shear.

I've read that gloves and mask are a good idea for galvanized because of the zinc coating. Not sure if that matters with shears but thought I would mention it.

No es necesario usar mascarillas para la chapa galvanizada, es tan solo un recubrimiento de Zinc sobre el acero para protegerlo del óxido. Los guantes son opcionales, por posibles cortes cuando la mano avanza entre ambos lados de la chapa.
@VideoJoeKnows

Well gloves because if you aren't careful you could cut yourself in the blink of an eye as this stuff can slice you open if you're not careful for sure!

Thanks for the video. I have to make 20 48" cuts. I can do saw, nibbler, and plasma, but none of these are particularly clever. Score, bend, and snap with 48"x120" sheet is not easy either. Then finally, I had an old Black and Decker all aluminum electric shear and wow, that solved the problem. 10 times faster than a nibbler - goes about as fast as you can push it. However if galvanized, the shear "slips off" the zinc and not sever the metal - tricky to use.

Nofer Trunions that's an thin iron sheet,you can't cut an steel sheet with that bonsai cutter plier.
@NoferTrunions
@NoferTrunions 7 жыл бұрын
We're all using steel sheet here - not iron. Iron sheet is quite speciaialized such as in transformer laminations. I had no idea what bonsai cutters were, but checked them out and can say I've never seen them used in the roofing, auto body, and aviation trades. "Tin snips" and compound aviation ships are the hand tools used. While they can be used "easily" on 24ga, they can't be used for any quantity of cuts.

Nofer Trunions iron sheet is covered by an zinc to avoid the oxidizing process under water conditions or salt.almost every stuffs are made up by steel with carbon in it but some application like a thin sheet or foil don't need but a chemical coat.if you use an iron gun barrel for no smoke ammo,you would be blown up with the gun.i remember reading that people were using iron for structure,not steel which would be invited then.
@melgross
@melgross 6 жыл бұрын
They were using wrought iron, which is close to steel.
@NoferTrunions
@NoferTrunions 6 жыл бұрын
Never encountered wrought iron sheet - what would be a reason for using it? I was under the impression that "galvanized" sheet was steel w/zinc plating.
