Good few tips it's so easy to use incorrectly especially when rushing, had my gerber machete years and I've give it hell perfect for the job 👍

I see this episode is sponsored by Gerber. Gerber machetes are not that great, blade stock is thicker than it needs to be. You can get a Tramontina machete that works better. Also don’t use a lanyard with a machete. If it slips from your hand it’s going to swing from your wrist flip down and either clip your leg or torso while it swings around.

Really solid tip, I never thought of this but can easily imagine it happening. Just got mine today and was gonna make a paracord wrist strap, now I will not. My future shins and forearms thank you!

@@Aethelvlad To each their own, but first of all, this guy was using his lanyard incorrectly. When worn properly, the machete will not slip out of your hand.
@naed_coral2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Gerber don't recommend you wear the lanyard like that, he's wearing it wrong and should be slipped over the handle with your hand through the loop and not on the wrist like that :)

I agree with you and those machete are the worst not good very heavy never sharp enough poor quality and he doesn't know how to use it lol
@BronzeTheSling Жыл бұрын
My machete-experienced friend bought a Gerber but the metal was very poor quality, dented in no time like tinfoil. His friend's Gerber machete broke within 1 week of purchase. I reccomend Cold Steel.

I've had cuple gerber machetes and you can get much better machete for a similar price. Not saying they are the worst thing you could have but the steel is abit soft its easy to dent and roll the blade and it dosent stay sharp very long
@RadDadisRad3 жыл бұрын
Weird thing about machetes is they are supposed to be soft so they flex. If they are somewhat hard they will snap if you accidentally slap it on a chop. Softer steels will just flex. That’s why the tougher harder steel machetes are so thick, it’s to resist the flexing. And because of that it’s a double edged sword. You now have a really heavy machete that’ll get your shoulder tired. So to keep from throwing it from a tired grip they’ll put a lanyard on it. Well the problem is that lanyard just turned your throwing machete into a tethered machete that’ll swing back towards where it’s tied. Ouch. Cheap thin machetes are the way to go. Make sure your sharpens edge isn’t very fine. I’ve ran through a couple Tramontina machetes. Costa Ricans swear by Tramontina machetes.

@@RadDadisRad I've had alot of machetes in my time and it's just this brand I've had the problem with I think it's the heat treat maybe as all the other machetes ive had the blades had all help up pretty well and ive had everything from cold steel, Kershaw, condor and a whole lot of other brands, machetes are kinda my thing but just had real problems keeping gerber machetes sharp and not damaging the blade as all the gerber I've ever see have notches all down the blade
@RadDadisRad3 жыл бұрын
@@lincs4life I’m not disagreeing with you. I actually agree that the Gerber is too soft and I do believe it’s an underwhelming heat treat.
@lincs4life3 жыл бұрын
@@RadDadisRad I did some abuse tests on the one I had, basically put it in a vise and hit it with a cheap Latin style machete I had. Hardly any danger to the cheap macete but a good half inch deep notch in the gerber
@naed_coral2 жыл бұрын
Incorrectly he has the lanyard on his wrist, Gerber states you should loop it over the handle then place your hand through the loop to grip the machete Also consider more PPE than this guy with gloves and longsleeve shirt

Just bought a small saw and a machete at Lowes. Their check-out computer signals a warning when someone is buying a saw. But no problem at all to buy a machete. 🤣🤣

Use the relaxed grip like how you use swords ☝️ You don’t want to use the death grip pickaxe grip, your fingers would be easy target from your opponent ☝️ You always wanna relax your grip, kind of almost a pistol grip

Why dull the blade by trying to a huge branch, your machete should have a surradded edge on the reverse side , to saw through thick vines!

I am all for a good machete but the Gerber is not at all good. 1 whack and the metal rolled. they did send me another one but it resides in the package.
@CrimeVid3 жыл бұрын
I don’t like them, I’d rather have the local variety of billhook or devon staff /slasher, let’s face it every area has been using it’s own terrain suitable brush cutter for a couple of centuries at least, and those big old ash handles won’t cause a lot of blisters !
