i'm grateful how simple but functional you made it (gives me a LOT of comfort that you can wear a side part OR a middle part but cut it the same so I don't have to commit), and it's evident it's that good since people are coming to see it years later! i've pretty much gone my whole life with a straight blunt cut with my hair behind my head because i can't be fussed about styling or layers too much and didn't want to fork out a bunch of money for a hairstylist, but it also means that i can't pull out nicer looking face-framing parts when i want to wear my hair up/back but don't necessarily need the pure functionality of it literally ALL being up and back. The straight blunt cut I have with my wavy hair makes it so I get these cute chunky-but-not-super-chunky upward flicks at the tips which look really fun in ponytails, but I never wear them out because I didn't like not being able to frame my face without stupidly long strands! This tutorial seems like I'll be able to preserve most of the blunt cut and just have to blend the edges of the framing parts in which is great.

I middle of the night (insomnia mixed with a 2 day migraine) decided I had to have long layers in the front, because I have a military ball to go to on Saturday (I realize not one of the things I just said means it was a smart idea to cut my own hair.....) and I want the front of my updo to have a little more softness. I followed this video, and it looks so good! Not too much, not too little, and blended perfectly! Thank you so much, the sharp angle and over directing the hair made a huge difference. My best advice would be to cut longer than you think you want. I decided I could always go shorter, so I thought I was cutting 2-3” below where I thought I wanted, and then once the hair wasn’t under tension anymore, it was actually exactly what I wanted. If I had tried to go shorter from the beginning, it would have been too short.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have layered straight hair, side swept bangs, and I have moved and not found a hairstylist to cut my hair yet. I was dreading trimming my side swept bangs and wanted to find a good tutorial for it, and yours is just perfect. You show and explain everything so nicely, that I was able to have the confidence to go for it. I had found a bunch of tutorials for side swept bangs but they were all meant to keep the bangs on the same side, and I like switching it up and let it get longer at times. I have been able to achieve great results both times I watched your tutorial and went for it. I don't do the whole process, only the first part, cause my hair a little bellow shoulder length and I'd never risk messing it up, so I just do the front part respecting the original bangs my hairstylist had cut. I can't thank you enough for this. Best tutorial ever! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

If you use hairdryer, do not do it anymore. If you won't go outside on a cold day, allows it to dry naturally. The last rinse with water try that it is cold & don't wash it so frequently. From own experience, the products that make it silky & shiny: masks of olive oil, honey, & then wash normal + a spoonful of apple cider vinegar, mixed with water in sink with half water, this in the last rinse. (do not worry about the smell, there's nothing left)

I have never had a good stylist. I have learned a lot though during covid and I am cutting my own hair now even though I have screwed it up a few times. In Dec 2020 a stylist stacked my hair when all I wanted was the last 2 inches layered and lightened up in weight. Instead she chopped and stacked my hair. The shorted and longest layer was a foot apart and my hair was only at the top of my shoulders! I cried for months and here I am almost two years later and I am now almost out of having a "tail" at the end of my hair. My hair is only at the collar bone because I have had to keep trimming the bottom while the top layers catch up. It has been a nightmare. Now my face framing layers have a "hole" area from me messing them up but this video helped me to even it out some and now I just have to let it grow. Your video was very helpful. I need to find a video of yours for cutting the back as I do want a bit of layer in the back. I think your old one from 2016 has it. Thanks so much.

Ok. So I have been shortening my fringe the past 2 week with some kitchen scissors. My hairdresser scissors finally arrived today after two weeks of waiting. So here I was again cutting my fringe and had made a complete mess of it, it looked way too heavy and short, at a stretch just under my jaw. Went online to see if I can find a video to fix the weird look and here I am, after 30 mins of staring into the mirror with these weird scissors which by the way don’t even happen to have a point, don’t get that, and hooray! I have followed your instructions carefully and it looks quite good, considering what it looked like before. I will sleep tonight :) Thank you soo soo much, you’ve saved me :)

My hair has so many layers now and has great movement. The shape and length is exactly how I wanted it at it looks fantastic just air drying with some argon oil and tousling mouse for a nice beach wavy look. I keep getting compliments on how it came out and people can’t believe that I just cut it myself. My hair is still really long but it looks so much better now. Theresa Brewer that’s often because some stylists avoid bending the rules or can’t see past the basics. Long over directed layers is the best way to explain it....most stylists just don’t know how to or are intimidated to bend these rules.

I am 51 and my husband loves my hair long, but it's THICK and I feel like a pony! I've used this tutorial twice to gets some of it away from my face. Also used Primal Palate tutorial on here to color my hair using Morrocco Method henna. Pro stylist always mess up my hair

Not ALL men love long hair on women. And, frankly, I cut my hair how I want it.. not how I think men will want to see it.

Megan, All the men that I like do! :D And I love my hair. It's soft and silky, probably my best feature.

!!!PRO TIP (from a non-professional)!!! Cutting your hair wet can cause split ends. But for those of us with thick, coarse and/or wavy hair, cutting dry is way too hard. Last time I followed this tutorial I saturated my dry hair with coconut oil and it was "wet" enough to cut and I could get a fine tooth comb through my hair, something I had never done ever. So far, no split ends at all! It does take two shampoos to get the coconut oil out, because you really do have to saturate your hair. I used almost a half cup in my tailbone-length hair. Thanks again Melissa for the stellar tutorial.

Has anyone tried this on short/medium length hair? My hair is about shoulder length and I do my part very far to the side.. I was hoping to achieve the Debby Harry volumized hair flip look with this

Am sitting here smiling.... I just copied your video and I look great! Had a long bob, till 15 minutes ago straight till over the shoulder/ collar bone. I cut the center just under my chin, first checked if that length would fit behind my ear, to both sides it does. Then started snipping.... then blow dry... now smiling! Seriously people are going to ask if I went to the salon. Thanx for posting this, you made my day!

Finally felt comfortable with cutting layers after watching this and it worked amazingly! I have waist long thick hair that was getting unruly and it needed something unmajor to shake it up a bit. Thankyou, this was a great easy to follow tutorial 😄

I just did this and my hair looks better than ever, I'm so grateful. Ahh awesome thank you. I washed it with Pureology Hydrate right before to get it wet, and sprayed it with a mix of leave in conditioner and water throughout the process, (which helps because my hair is naturally dry and brittle.) Two things I did differently: The initial cut in front, I cut it into a triangle instead of straight across. (It might fix the issue of ever having the center being too short again.) Second thing: I dried my hair, then combed two layers at mid-crown and trimmed them one-by-one fairly uniformly. (Straight across for the crown cuts, gives easy volume, don't take too much off.) Again, my hair looks amazing and I hadn't cut it for 15 months prior. Wow.
